The care and compassion this facility has is astonishing. My rabbit, Norman, needed a post emergency vet check up and his usual vet was unwilling/unable to give us an appointment within 3 weeks! We called 15 veterinarians on the island and were turned away every time. We felt absolutely hopeless in getting an appointment. We called Animal General and explained the situation, we were put on hold for a minute while they looked at the schedule, The woman on the phone started her sentence with “I’m sorry-“. Immediately we thought we were turned away again and my heart sunk. Instead she followed up with “I’m sorry- but the earliest appointment is 2 o’clock today”. They had just given us kindness that we so desperately needed, and it was delivered with a ‘sorry’ for not being impossibly sooner. We were BRAND new clients and they treated Norman and I like family. Norman has unfortunately since passed away, although the attention and care he received was amazing. I will always hold Animal General near to my heart. I cannot recommend these professionals enough.
My 14 year old shih tzu/bichon had a large inflamed wart on his leg that he would not stop gnawing at because he was hurting. One vet told me he could only remove it under general anesthesia but due to his age he wouldn’t recommend it. Another vet gave me antibiotic spray which did nothing to alleviate the problem. I researched other alternatives hoping to find a vet who could help him without hurting him. I brought him to see Dr Leonhardt and she was amazing. Knowledgeable, professional, patient, personable, gentle and confident she could help him. On the first visit, with just local anesthesia she meticulously removed the growth, stitched the area and we were on our way home. The incision site was a clean straight line and is now fully healed one week later. I would wholeheartedly recommend her for any and all pet care. She is fabulous!
I cant begin to express how grateful I am for this place. 13 years ago, I was referred here by a friend. I would travel from Freeport to East Norwich. There were plenty of good vets by me on the south shore but nothing compared to the staff at Animal General. I then moved to Huntington and I still took the trip. I have 2 dogs but as my one dog got older, we had to frequent the vet more. They always took such good care of me and my girl. Dr. Perrone and Dr. Leonhardt are absolutely amazing at what they do- not only are they great with pets but they always knew how to explain things in a way which I would understand. They are extremely thorough and helpful. The ladies are the front desk are truly the best- Haley, Donna, Maeve, and Sharon. I spoke to these women daily when my dog was at the end of her life and they were always so understanding and so helpful. Eventually, I will get another pup as a friend for my remaining dog and when I do I will still take the 30 mile round trip to this place.
So pleased with the care that my cat has received here from Dr. Allar! Everyone at the office is friendly and accommodating. I also appreciate the transparency in pricing for dental treatments.
Took our prarie dog Bubba in for a check-up....felt immediately welcome and comfortable thanks to Donna and Haley. Quickly all of the anxiety of the visit went away.... and not just for us, but for Bubba too. Jaime and Dr Leonhardt did an amazing job checking Bubba... who you can tell felt extremely comfortable and safe there....which has always been our main issue with any pet at the Vet.....but not here. Staff was great and extremely through, which put us all at ease with Bubba feeling better.
Always friendly and easy to deal with. They treat my chocolate lab, Brownie, with love every time I bring her there. They even let me borrow their steam vac when Brownie had an “accident” in my car. I’m very satisfied with their service.

I’m not one to ever publicly post my struggles or ever bash a business, but please all dog moms and dog dads beware of Animal General of East Norwich. Before recently I have always had such a positive experience here. Reception was always warm and welcoming. Hayley (reception) even took a phone call with me for over 20 minutes when I learned about my dog’s diagnosis just listening me to vent/cry. Besides the staff (vet techs, vets, reception) being great (they were ALWAYS able to squeeze me in whenever I needed - emergency or not). They also were very good with making the check-in procedure easier on me, as I have a dog-aggressive animal. I’m not sure what changed in that office recently but I am truly DISGUSTED. My dog had to go to the emergency room due to what I thought was a leg injury that happened while we were away. After going to the emergency room and getting my dog X-rays we saw something much more than just a torn limb every owners worst nightmare, an aggressive cancer (Osteosarcoma). After that ER visit I was sent to another hospital for further testing/consultation for amputation talks/pain management etc. After two hospital visits and after talking to 4 vets we decided a course of action. However, I had a quick question regarding my dogs diet that I THOUGHT my primary vet (SINCE THEY KNOW MY DOG and suggested this diet) would be able/happy to answer some quick questions for me. The vet (I’m unsure of the name but when I do find it I will add it to this review, I have called the office twice for the name but the original receptionist I talked to was not in so the other employee did not know) REFUSED to talk to me without me bringing my dog in. My dog did not need another evaluation as he had just had a traumatic two days of being sedated, undergoing X-rays, preparing for CT scans, bone biopsies, etc., all while dealing with massive diarrhea from his anxiety that was caused by all the hospitalization/sedation he just endured. I explained that after just going to two hospital visits (costing over $7K and more bills to come) as well as the hour drive for my dog, going to another vet visit really wasn’t needed and would be very difficult. After all the money I’ve spent in that office as well as having a relationship with the office I thought the least they could do is take the time to answer one or two questions for me that would have been a 45 second phone call on how I can prolong my sick, dying dog’s life as well as a question about his diet but apparently that was asking for too much. I am truly disgusted at how my dog and I were treated just two days after finding out my time with him is very limited, and life will look very different soon. Needless to say whatever time we have left with Hemi will NEVER be at this office again.
My kitten had an awful spay gone wrong AT A DIFFERENT VET. She was infected and bruised up so terribly. Not only did Dr. Perrone and Ramon take AMAZING care of her, they were so gentle and patient with my kitten! You could tell they really cared about the well being of my kitten. On top of all that, they also didn’t charge me an arm and a leg to fix another vets mistake! I would definitely recommend them to everyone! My fur baby is now in amazing hands and I am so grateful for them saving her life. Without them, I dont know where my kitten would be. ❤️
Had no idea this awesome place existed until last week when I rushed a gosling who’d been hit crossing Jericho Tpke. to them in an attempt to save his sweet life. Even though the outcome did not go as I’d hoped, I loved everything about this special space and the people running it. I have a feeling it won’t be my last experience there and I highly recommend it for anyone looking to rehab injured wildlife in this area or to make as your own vet (if I lived closed I’d be doing the latter for sure!).
I discovered this place after receiving a free voucher from the animal shelter where I found my cat Mac.During my search for the right office, I had low expectations due to the free check up voucher. I just assumed since it was free it wouldn’t be so great!Wrong!!!!Everyone here surpassed my expectations to say the least!!The care was exceptional fromreceptionists to the doctor herself!!I had to call a few times because I was unsure if I could make the appointment due to work! I never felt like a bother! Even during the visit, they assured me all would be well and encouraged me to ask as many questions as I wanted! They were very thorough on aftercare protocols! I most certainly asked them the same question about 5 times during the visit due to anxiety about the situation, though they were happy to kindly answer them each time! Great patience!They treated my little guy with gentle hands and gave both of us the emotional support we needed! ( mostly me)And they are funny!! The only question that was left unanswered today was if “fleas go to heaven?”😂 looking forward to his next visit!Thanks again everyone! You are all gems!! I’m so grateful to have found this office! Highly recommend!
Dr Leonhardt was wonderful! I was able to get a same day appointment for my sugar glider Lucifer. She quickly diagnosed him with cancer, which the previous vet had missed. Unfortunately I had to put him down the next day. She assumed liver cancer, and when I got the necropsy report back, she was completely right! She was able to provide medications to make him comfortable as well. Prices were also very fair.thank you Dr Leonhardt and staff!
Animal General is simply the best. Honest, kind and caring. I know my pets are in the best hands possible when bringing them here. Fair pricing, clean facility and the friendliest staff. I cant say enough about them!! I highly recommend them.
Animal General of east Norwich Dr Ellen Leonhardt- I highly recommend this clinic for pets - ALL TYPES! You do have to get your animal to their facility but it WILL BE WORTH IT!! The entire staff from Sharon who made my appointment to Donna that checked me in and Ariel that greeted me! PLEASE BELIEVE ME - UNBELIEVABLE WITH THEIR CARE OF MY PIG! This office is AMAZING! From the Doctors to the staff they truly care about the animals well being, as well as for wildlife. They are kind, patient and actually listen to you when you talk about your pets situation. I didnt feel rushed at all when dealing with Dr. Leonhardt. She was compassionate and let me express all my issues and concerns. Truly a gem of an office!

When our turtle needed some urgent care I called around to several vets only to be greeted with how much the visit would cost instead of how they could help. Animal General was recommended to us by Turtle Rescue of the Hamptons and while it was a bit of a trip for us traveling from Western Queens, it was well worth the visit. First impressions mean a lot and I got a very genuine and caring response when I first called them to inquire whether they could treat her. They worked with our schedule to get her seen as soon as possible. We saw Dr. Russo and he was wonderful! He showed genuine concern for our turtle and took the time to explain what was going on with her and the various treatment options available. During her hospitalization he called us several times to update us on her condition. When it was time to pick her up we met with a vet tech named Ramon who was amazing in how he handled her and in his demonstration to us in how to administer her antibiotic injections. And on our return visit for suture removal Ramon and Dr. Fredrickson made the process simple. Every staff member we had contact with had great people skills and made us feel comfortable. I would not hesitate to recommend Animal General and I would certainly make the trip again, if needed.
I brought my bunny in due to a breathing issue she developed. Not many vets will see bunnies and they took her the same day i called as a new patient. The cost of a xray and such was something i just couldnt really afford and it was just to confirm the likely diagnosis. Instead of trying to coerce me into the procedures, they consoled me and didnt make me feel horrible for deciding against spending a large amount of money just to confirm a diagnosis. They gave me medicine to try and help keep her comfortable in her final time left. Unfortunately my bun didnt even make it a week but when i called after she passed they said bring her right in. When you have a pet you have to expect things to be expensive. I didnt think anything was unreasonable and was likely comparable to anyone else who would have seen her. I took her once to a vet in Huntington and it cost me 2x more for that one visit just to tell me she has gas, than for what i paid at animal general for both visits combined. Dr Perrone was kind and patient as well as Maeve the assistant and the front desk staff who were all very caring. She lived a very long spoiled, happy life for a bunny. They even sent me a card in the mail. Thank you guys for making a hard time a little easier.
Live in TX but came to town for the holidays with Tango. My sister recommended Animal General because she takes brownie there, and I am thrilled she did.Tango had surgery a few days ago; the team looked at him in the middle of the holidays and was very insightful and helpful. I dont even know where to being and feel like I cant say enough good things. I have been going here for a few years have seen Dr. Russo & Dr. Perrone. Both of them were so kind and helpful. I recently started seeing Dr. Leonhardt for a chronic abscess issue my bunny is having. She has been so wonderful treating him and helping/guiding me through all of this. Has been going on for a few months. Always takes the time to discuss everything with me and answer my million questions. The staff has been wonderful getting me appointments and speaking with me. Its not easy to find a vet that is as knowledgable of rabbits as well as being kind/understanding/patient. Have seen over vets that were knowledgeable but not as nice. Im glad I listened to a friends recommendation to go here. I highly highly recommend Animal General.

If I have any future pets, they would be the one I run to when needing medical care and advice. Staff are friendly and informative. Place is clean. You can trust them with your furry friends, no matter what size. Dr. Russo was professional and caring. He will be our Primary MD for our pets. Strongly recommended to all pet owners.

The staff was very thorough, Doctor H was wonderful listened to Mickey’s history & checked every part of his body, ordered special dog food for his bowel problem, which has subsided. Mickey was very comfortable & I was put at ease. Wonderful experience!
Great veterinarian services. We have tried other veterinary services who were closer to our home over the years but they dont measure up. We own giant breed Newfoundland dogs and many other vets often handle smaller animals. We will only trust our Newfies to Dr Ellen Leonhardt and her team. Rosie and Ruthie give them an 8 out of 8 paw rating :-)
I had been taking my dogs and cats, driving about 40 miles, to see Dr Leonhardt for about 14 years now. She is wonderful, caring, knowledgeable, and thorough. If the review were to be about Dr Leonhardt, it would be 5 stars. However, since I am to rate this facility as a whole, I cannot give more than 3. Last week, I called at around 8:30am because I wanted to pick up a prescription on paper that day so that I can take it to a pharmacy. The trouble was that I was driving a rental car and I live in Astoria. They told me a vet would call me when the prescription was ready and to not come unless I get a call. I told her that I was in a rental, and I wanted to be able to pick it up early afternoon if possible. Her cold response was Doctor will call you and then you can figure out your schedule then. I said OK, fine because hey, what am I going to do about that. So all day Im trying to spend my time doing absolutely nothing useful, waiting for a phone call. Finally, I called around 4pm because I had not gotten a call and I had to head back home soon. Somebody else answered the phone and told me oh its ready. you can come pick it up now. I wouldnt be giving this account here if it was the first time I had trouble with the front desk staff being so difficult about prescription, or even the second time. This was third CONSECUTIVE time that I had called right after they opened in the morning, but didnt get a call back and I had to call in the late afternoon. I lost count on how many time before even when I called a day ahead. I am tired of having to deal with the front desk staff, and I will be looking for another vet now.
They have a promotion for new customers free check up and I was not offered that even though I did mention that their price is a lot higher than where I usually take my pet. Secondly, my pet was prescribed antibiotics and the vet failed to tell me the side effects of the meds. My pet had blood in his urine which apparently was a side effect of the antibiotics that also cost me an arm and a leg to find out.I think that the vet was not careful with examining my pet and giving the Rx or explaining the possible side effect and what to do if the side effects do happen. I will definitely not be going back to this place. Its very unfortunate because I live not too far from the clinic
One of the best places around I took 2 injured wild birds here they take care of them treatment and x-rays God bless the owner and all the staff truly pet loving and caring vetinarians thank you with all my heart .

Visited Dr. Leonhardt with my 3 young male cats early this afternoon and had a very pleasant experience!She was so gentle and patient, took her time with each cat. My cats were very nervous but both her and her accompanying tech were very easy going with them. Both were very knowledgeable and had a good understanding on their prior medical records. Dr. Leonhardt did very throughout physical exams on all 3 boys with no rush.The ambience was so warm and welcoming. Checking in and checking out was facilitated by very kind receptionists. Professionalism was there and overall an excellent time :)
