We have adopted Nitro an American Bulldog mix. What a gentle soul. Loves my senior dog Max, 🐕 excellent with other animals and people. The volunteers are very loving and caring. So if you decide to adopt, volunteer and want to change an animals life and go from hopeless to hopeful...I highly recommend this rescue.

When many rescues take in puppies and young dogs and kittens that have a quick and easy turnaround, Save A Pet does not shy away from real rescue. Many of Save A Pets animals recently are often seniors in need of serious medical overhaul which they receive at the shelter clinic. Two of Save A Pets longest residents are paralyzed dogs from Mexico that Save A Pet happily houses and cares for for the long haul. Save A Pet stands by all of their animals and oftentimes takes back former adoptions due to an owner becoming sick or passing away. Take note that most people who write a bad review either dont provide context or write a diatribe simply because they did not get their way. At the end of the day, the animals at this shelter get limitless love and care and the staff work tirelessly to find them the perfect homes. Save A Pet is a real deal shelter that does real rescue and walks the walk.

Poor phone skills and they don’t offer any aid for rabbits just dogs and cats cause their popular in her own words.! Made me sick to my stomach hearing that all animals matter

Worst animal shelter ever I feel bad for the animals that are here. Horrible to work with, judges every customer based on nothing but the way they come across when they first walk in. They keep their cats in small cages and don’t let them roam around at all. They are not willing to work with you and are extremely rude. I felt sick to my stomach in there. My friend adopted a kitten who just had been neutered and they told her he was good to come home. She brought him home and he stopped eating, wasn’t moving, became very bloated and sick. She called the vet and they told her it’s a huge emergency and the shelter messed it all up. I am truly disgusted with this shelter and will never step for into a place that mistreats their animals and customers. One volunteer did not even know which treats were for kittens versus adult cats and none of them could figure it out. I wish I could take all the animals out of there and save them from a place called save a pet .. horrifying and horrible people. To be stuck in small cages until someone chooses to adopt them is such torture. I highly recommend south Hampton animal shelter or Kent animal shelter over this place.

We have adopted twice with Save-a-pet over the past 3 years. We have a happy healthy pup of 5 months and our now 3 yr old cat. If you are a person who loves your pets as part of the family, have a safe healthy environment, good references and are in a position to take care of your pet responsibly, you should have no issues getting approved. It takes a big heart and a lot patience and love to take in a rescue pet. Save-a-pet gives rescues the care they need when they arrive, they just want to make sure they get a good home after all they have been through. I appreciate the process and it was worth it! I would definitely adopt a rescue over purchase

We had a terrible experience at Save A Pet, & would recommend you go elsewhere if you want to adopt a pet. My elderly moms cat passed away a few weeks ago, & we thought it would be nice to get a shelter cat as a new pet for her. We called Save A Pet & explained the situation , my mom wanted an older cat as she is elderly herself, & they said they had some. We went there last week, & she was shown a 10 year old cat named Charlotte. We were sad to see so many cats being kept in small cages , & my mom decided she wanted to take Charlotte & give her a good home. We filled out an application -including 2 references - & waited. We got a call on Weds. afternoon that they had reviewed the application & spoken to our references, that everything was good to go & to come on Thurs with a cat carrier to take Charlotte home. My mom was really excited to be getting a new cat, as she lives on her own ( with aides coming in daily) & is lonely since her cat passed away. When we got there, things were chaotic. The woman we had spoken to wasnt there, & she hadnt left a note that we were picking the cat up. When the woman that was covering at the front desk found out that my moms previous cat was an outdoor cat, she apparently became nervous that my mom would let Charlotte out , & told us (again) that she was an indoor cat that could never go out. We explained (again- we had explained this the first time we went there) that my moms previous cat had been a feral cat for several years before she adopted him , & that she & all of her family & supporting people would make sure the new cat never got out. The woman then got up without saying anything & went in the back of the building, leaving us sitting there for almost an hour. We thought she had gone to get things together for us to take the cat, but we finally asked what was going on – the people at the front desk had no idea & went to find her. About 10 minutes later she came back & asked to speak to me privately. She again expressed concern that the cat would get out & implied that my mom was too feeble minded to see that it wouldnt. I explained it wouldn’t be an issue – my mom does have some cognition issues, but is more than capable of keeping the cat indoors, not to mention all the support she has at home to help. She said ok, show the people upfront your driver’s licenses & she’d be there in a few minutes. She then came out & said she couldn’t get a hold of her boss, & we couldn’t take the cat. She said they would call us the next day. My mom walked in there feeling great, & walked out feeling like 2 cents! She asked them on the way out ,”do you think I’m too old?” They assured her they didn’t. My mom isn’t stupid, she knew they suddenly didn’t trust her. On the way home she was saying, “They think I’m an idiot.”, They think I’m too old”, What did i do wrong? The next day Save a pet never called, so I called them that afternoon asking to explain to us exactly why they did what they did. Of course no one we had spoken to was there, & they said theyd have someone call us back. Once again, they never called. They made a woman in her 80s whos already dealing with her friends passing away or going into nursing homes feel even worse. A 10 year old cat would have had a great home, & is now stuck in a small cage. Go elsewhere - we dont know how they treat animals, but they certainly dont treat people very well!

This is a scam operation. Very disappointing. I’m a nurse practitioner who lives on a 5 acre piece of property. Applied for a dog who really needed a home, poor anxious thing, I have no other pets and the dog would get all my attention / care. Well, Save A Pet never called me in over 2 weeks to approve or deny me. They’d rather keep a dog who shakes from fear and abandonment, locked up in a cage on their premises 7 days a week then give the dog to a loving health professional with a great home to provide . What kind of “recipe center” is that? They didn’t even at least offer me another animal to save if they felt I wasn’t a good fit for the dog I applied for. They offered no feedback, no resolution. When they’re a non for profit whose sole purpose is to provide homes for dogs in need of rescue. Sad for all the animals they’re obviously gate keeping for funding.

From the first day I walked into Save A Pet we felt welcomed. They took their time with us and I never felt rushed or pushed to pick. We had the opportunity to spend time with the cats there and they answered any questions we had. We mainly dealt with Gabriella, who is a committed, sweet, and helpful soul that works there. I cant say enough great things about her and you can tell she truly loves her job.Save A Pet is clean and every single person there you can tell works extremely hard to do the best they can for these sweet animals. The application process was seamless and when I messaged or emailed them, they responded quickly. Went back several times to visit and we came home with the sweetest cat. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you do for animals. We definitely recommend Save A Pet!!!

Im giving this place 2 stars because they seem to genuinely care about their animals. The staff that provided care for the felines seemed genuinely kind and considerate. They are only getting 2 stars because they have terrible customer relations. From the first moment we walked in, one of the front desk women treated us as though we could not possibly have been good cat guardians. It was very uncomfortable to say the least. After dragging us along for about seven days with an application review they decided to decline us because we have two older outdoor cats. Sadly for us we had visited them 4 times with my two daughters both of Home fell in love with one particular cat.If I was in the position to make a donation to this particular organization I would do so with the strict stipulations that they use the funds to properly train their administrative staff. Cats are special creatures and they do need people and organizations to look after them.We ultimately adopted from a wonderful facility in Commack. Ill be posting my review for this facility shortly.

I’ve had one experience at save a pet - it wasn’t to adopt a pet, it was for my daughter. She is a Girl Scout and has to do her bronze award, so for it, we were going to donate food and other supplies, and also build a shelf for them. I Attempted to call and ask them many times. No one answered the first at least five times. When someone finally picked up , the co owner sue picked up. She was soooo snotty while we were just trying to help them. She sounded like she hated her job. She said she was busy at the moment and had to call me back later that day. Well when she finally called back, we already missed the deadline and now we have to do another year of junior to do it. Thanks a lot save a pet :/ . Also - it says a lot that the owner reviewed her own place :-(

These animals are very well looked after contrary to what other reviews have said. The staff is friendly and they keep the facility as clean as possible. A lot of animals that would be overlooked are getting a second chance here. The facility may be a little small for the amount of animals but the quality of care and upkeep makes up for it. Furthermore, they are continuously improving the facility and lives of these poor animals.

Next day i called to check the status and I was told that because of my kids (3) and (2 month old) that they decided not to accept my application. How does this make any sense? we obviously would not be looking for a pet if we were not able to care for it. When adopting a cat, we played with her in the playroom they have so we could see how we liked the cat. There was a small dog behind the front desk. One of the workers was in the playroom with us, but saw that the dog behind the desk had gotten out. She ran out of the little playroom to put the dog back, almost shutting the door on the cats head! Afterwards, it was obvious she didn’t care that she ALMOST KILLED THE CAT. Lots of people in my family also have bad experiences here. All the negative reviews here don’t surprise me. I’ve also heard that most of the pets at Save-a-pet are sick when they get them. Horrible service. I feel bad for all the animals here.

My mom went in this morning to begin the process for adoption. We were told that because her previous dog that passed away only 6 months ago wasn’t spayed (for health and monetary reasons that were outside of her control) that she might get denied the adoption. Which left my mom crying at home because she felt judge for something she had no control of. We hope we do get the puppy because I feel that’s not a good enough reason to deny the puppy a good home. Things like that people have no control of and it shouldn’t be a factor in an adoption. The animals seemed to be taken well care of and the staff is very approachable and they later apologized. Thankfully she got the dog!!!

We called and they told us to put her in a room with a shirt of ours, the food and water and litter box. I went in to change the water and she started hissing at me. So he went in the next day and she went to swat at him.We called the next day to let them know what was going on and we couldn’t get her. She bit and scratched me. We called them again, the girl said she was alone, couldn’t do anything but to bring her back. WE HAD TO PAY $100 FOR SOMEONE TO GET HER OUT OF THE BATHROOM.We arrive and the girl behind the desk proceeds to say “you have had cats before so you should know what to expect!”Really? Mike had cats older than that snot nosed girl.I walked out after she started berating him in front of customers. With this virus and him not working, $100 is a lot to us. Not so much as a phone call from the owner. Please DO NOT GO THERE.

My daughter and I went to adopt a shih Tzu which we fell in love with the second we saw him. They denied me because I didnt bring my other animals to the vet annually. It didnt matter that my Great Dane lived to 3 months shy of 12 years old, which is unheard of. I also have a cat that is almost 16years old. I thought the whole idea was to find forever loving homes for these animals, which is what he would have gotten at our home. In addition the poor dog was matted and filthy. I have experience with grooming them since I worked in a dog grooming shop when I was younger. All of my pets were vaccinated and spayed/ neutered, and if they were ever in need of medical attention they received it. I will think twice before sending anyone here just so they can be disappointed.

2 of the women there are very nice. I donated over $140 worth of supplies and toys and fell in love with a cat there. I filled out an application for him and the nasty heavy blonde woman with glasses at the counter wanted vet information on Dogs myself and my family had owned and passed away over 10 years ago (which is irrelevant to the adoption). She also insinuated that I was a horrible pet owner because my indoor cat had not been updated on her shots yet this year. She insisted I pay to have my cat updated immediately which will cost over $250 and pay the additional $100 for the cat I was interested in. Even though I donated like I said over $140 worth of supplies. Only to get a call one day later that they gave the cat to someone else. Im never one to throw good deeds in anyones face but they are extremely money hungry. the same day I came in they gave a couple 2 new puppies recieving a donation of over $400. The couple owned multiple cats having already lost 2 of them. For a place that leaves their answering machine stating they cant take in any cats or dogs because they are full, they make it extremely hard and will make you feel like absolute garbage for wanting to adopt from them. Ill be donating to the New York bully crew next year and make sure that any one I know adopts an animal from a no kill shelter who actually wants to see their pets find good homes.

My daughter had one cat for 9 years, another for 18 years and they would not let her adopt a cat because they said, and I quote, Cats keep on dying in your care. What kind of idiot would say such a thing. That cat that lived for 18 years had a long, happy and healthy life. So apparently they would rather the kittens get no home and DIE in their cages rather than let a caring, kind person take one home and give it the same care she gave to 2 other cats she took good care of for nearly 2 decades. These neanderthals should rethink their cavalier attitude and misguided rules.

I see some people are upset with Save-A-Pet. I think people should not look to hard on their desire to make sure an animal finds a good home. I adopted a cat from them nearly a decade ago, and they were a bit tough on me too, but I understood it was for the best interests of the cat; who cant speak for herself.I adopted another cat from a shelter in Maryland. I discovered the shelter in Maryland had missed a boat load of health problems she had. After $3000 in expenses we managed to correct all but one of her problems.Contrasting my experiences between the two shelters, Id pick Save-A-Pet every time. I hold no ill will towards the other shelter because Im sure they meant well. Even so, regardless of the path, both cats were worth the effort and beloved members of the family until they passed on.

I went in with full intentions of adopting an adorable German Shepard mix named Jane. I was told to bring my current dog in so they can meet each other so I did. The lady the was doing the meet and greet was clearly nervous and as any dog owner knows dogs feed off of that and can sense tension. Every time my dog went to go sniff the puppy or try to play with the puppy the lady would push my dog away. The lady did not get off her knees for the whole 20 minutes all she wanted to do was keep them seperate. My dog of course wanted to play and was trying to sniff and play bite. My wife gets a call a few days later requesting us to bring our dog down again because they werent sure if we have the right home for the puppy because our dog was play biting and the person that judges if the dogs get along would be in. This place is so unorganized and clearly has no idea how animals act and care for the best interest. A review was left on their Facebook page which was quickly deleted so clearly negative criticism can not be taken by them.

It is completely unrealistic to expect people that adopt dogs to be home all day every day. I have had plenty of animals in my life to know what they need and how to take care of them. If this woman tells all the people that come in this crap then she is stopping these poor animals from getting homes. As a shelter that receives animals, I would think that they want to help pet owners to reunite with their pets.

Good parking. Facility as a RESCUE is immaculately clean. Please help them continue the good work they do for pets in their care.My story is of Finn formerly Neyo. A male cockapoo who was filled with anxiety. Well I adopted him and a dog behavioural specialist. Julio Rivera taught both Finn and myself how going forward would lead us to a happily ever after. My Patience, understanding, determination drove Finn to his current mind set-life is good. Adopting a rescue pet is more than food. Water and visits to vet. Please consider adopting a rescue and help them find theur happliy ever after.

Awful place. Should be shut down. Smells. The president Dori , is all about money. She’s an awful person. The woman has no conscience. There is not a sincere bone in her body. I feel sorry for any animal that ends up in this hell hole. By the way notice that Dori reviews her own place. I bet that she gets people to write good reviews because anyone who has been in this place more than a few times knows that it smells, it’s dirty, the staff is rude and the place operates more like a pet shop.

Went here with the children And we picked a dog filled out the app and waited a day,Then I went back with the kids to see how it was going the girl at the counter said they could only reach one of my reference and also couldnt reach our vet. They wanted the vet Because on the app we put that we had a 13 y/o male shih tzu that wasnt fixed but up on all shots.so we called the vet and asked, could they call the shelter because we know how busy they are after finally opening after covid but if they could please make the call the kids were supa excited . We also brang our dog to meet the new male dog just to see if they would get along they seem Happy and got along very good together. The .Next day my wife and Kids go to meet the dog because its her day off of work and she hasnt met him yet At the shelter They put us in a room with the dog were looking to adopt and the kids played with him and my wife just loves him. also when we leave we ask if there is any thing else they need from us,they say no. The Next day I get a call sorry your app was denied reason your 13 y/o male was not fixed. Then why would it take 3 days, for them to call my Vet and references if it was on the App on the first day. Why would they deny a male dog a loving home because the 13 y/o male who lives there is not fixed.SMH-

Years ago my family and I adopted a dog from here unfortunately she got cancer and passed away a few months ago we went back and found a dog and fell in love with it unfortunately she got adopted so we looked at other dogs there. We fell in love with another dog who had puppies. Of course she had to take care of the puppies so we had to wait. We filled out an application and they said she was ours. So we went there and visited her at least 3 times a week and they all knew us there. Finally all her puppies left and she needed to be fixed. She got fixed and recovered. We ran into some medical issues but said we could take her on a specific day we wanted to go visit her so we called and they said she got adopted were devistated and don’t think we want to go back there again. We didn’t get any call or any warning they just gave her away even though we were there all the time helping with her puppies and playing with the cats. I am very disappointed with save a pet

I happenned to be there when 3 week old abandoned kittens came in. 2 of the orange tabbies were playing and eating, but the tiny runt of the litter didnt move. She looked dead. I picked her up and held her against my heart. She still didnt move, but she started to purr. She started to drink from a bottle, I adopted Madison. They kept her and cared for her until she was well to come home. I never wanted a black cat, but shes long and lean and reminds me of the old Egyptian cats. Shes so loving and so funny and shes the best spider killer Ive ever had. LoL the staff was wonďerful and caring and I cant thank them enough for the joy theyve givien mei.
