We adopted Pepper from the HAHS. The process was simple. The facility is beautiful and the animals are lovingly cared for. The staff are careful to make sure the animals are healthy and will go to caring homes. I would recommend to anyone looking for a new family member.

Hornell Area humane society was amazing when we adopted our two kittens. They had the kittens comfort was foremost in their mind the entire time. They accommodated us and our weird timeline coming back from vacation and helped us with advice after we got home with them. They are all very sweet and a wonderful place to adopt!!

This past fall we adopted our newest family member from Hornell, the team there is great to work with! If ever the time comes that we adopt another dog, we’ll be going back to HAHS. We recommend them 100%, well worth the hour or so drive out there. The Facilities are clean, the people there are so nice and they aren’t pushy when it comes to looking at dogs, You can tell they all really love the animals and what they do, which is great to see firsthand. overall great experience. Our cheeseball puppy was the perfect addition.

I recently adopted a kitten. I am grateful for his kind foster mom who took great care of him before we adopted him. They care about the animals they rescue and it shows. I would highly recommend adopting from them. We drove over 2 hours and they made it so easy for us to complete the process! I am beyond grateful for the experience we were provided by Hornell Area Human Society. I couldn’t imagine our lives without Thor (Pop).

We recently adopted a three year old Labrador Retriever mix from here. We applied on a Friday, the shelter got back to us the same day, and we were able to meet our new family member on Monday! The application process was reasonable, yet it made sure our lifestyle was compatible with our dogs energy level, and personality! We could have taken her home Monday but because she was a little shy with my fiance we visited her again on Wednesday and we were able to take her home for a two week foster to adopt trial that day. This is a great concept that other shelters should use! The staff checked in throughout the two weeks to make sure things were going well and to check if we needed anything. I would definitely adopt through this shelter again, they seem to really care for the animals in their care!

I walked in, filled out an application and saw 2 small dogs that day. I picked the one I wanted pending approval of my app. That all happened quickly and I was able to bring Lola home under the Foster to Adopt program until she had surgery and was chipped. Once all of that was taken care of we officially became her new family. She has fit in after a brief adjustment. The staff were extremely friendly to me on all occasions and made this process an easy one. Thank you all very much.

I just want to say I will never go to you guys or recommend you guys, or select you when I am shopping on Amazon. What would of been my first time adopting a pet was met with restrictions. (If you have a pet at home unaltered you cant adopt until the pet is spayed/neutered or have medical reason) I missed out on 6 possible adoptions because of this. Shouldnt have restrictions like this unless the person is known animal abuser or other serious reasons. I found a 8 week old Chihuahua puppy for FREE. I tried to give you guys a shot, but there is no way I will ever think of you guys in the future or recommend to others. You lost a supporter. Now I am able to give this new pup the life it deserves. Will spoil him and take him to the vet get his shots and get him neutered and chipped. Will never forget this because it really hurt. First time I thought of getting a pet since my Dog Bear died it was spur of the moment when I seen those pictures.. I hope you can try to be less restrictive with the rules when you are trying to give pets up for adoption. Looks like this place has a lot of recent negative reviews.

At first, I really believed this was a reliable shelter. But within a few weeks I realized I was just being given the run around. I picked a cat to do the foster to adopt process because this was my first cat that I would have by myself (I had pets throughout my childhood) I was told she was approximately 6 months old. The cats at the shelter seemed to be sniffling and sneezing and had what seemed to be a cold, but the cat I picked out seemed to not be this way. Within the first week of having her home she was sneezing, sniffling, and had a green purulent discharge coming from her eyes and ears. Took her to the vet without records (because I could not have hers until I fully adopted her) and come to find out she has an upper respiratory infection, ear mites, and is approximately 3-4 times the age they claimed her to be. Understandably I chose to get her illnesses treated and chose to also finish the adoption process. It took almost 2-3 weeks to finish this process because it was a constant back and forth game and seemed impossible to ever get into touch with the right person. I am now discovering that she also has intestinal worms that she came home with. Overall, I understand when you have many cats all together things can be spread around but this is just unacceptable and I have spent hundreds of dollars trying to give my cat a better life than she was previously provided.

Marcia and Richard Schaefer Delmar, NY adopted Grover(kitten) whom we renamed Mitzvah(meaning good deed)Whatever the highest rating is for a Humane Society, we want to give that and higher for Hornell Area Humane Society. From our first communication, we could feel the love for their pets and for adopting pet parents. It is like they are finding homes for thier own pets, and we all know how we feel about our own. We received personal phone calls at each stage of the process. Each person is so kind and patient and helpful. Kim is our adoption counselor and we think she is so wonderfull, warm and friendly and knowledgable and obviously a cat lover. We also had positive interactions with Sarah, Brittany and Felicia. And want to thank those who work so hard devotedly and whom we did not meet. Everyone also understood that it is o k to want a certain type of cat and the written descriptions are detailed and truthful. After only a few days, we knew we had the perfect kitten/ cat for us. He was originally brought in from out of doors but . you would never know it because everyone at Hornell worked with him to become the most beautiful and smart(of course), the most affectionate, playful, fun, spunky purring lap cat who loves to be petted. He is so adaptable He has taken over our home and our hearts. We were very ready to give him the home he deserves and enjoyed setting up a very welcoming home with the necessities plus toys, scratching posts, perches and what we like to refer to as his Real Estate you know, the cat trees with condo and hammock placed in front of floor to ceiling windows for his Windows on the World. The set up at Hornell is so organized and immaculate. We love the way there are appropriately sized rooms for most of the kittens and cats rather than cages if they are ready to be with a few others in a room.Just to mention that it was very worthwhile for us to drive 4 hours from the Albany NY area to Hornell and 4 hours back home with our well behaved little new family member Mitzvah all in one day!We are so happy and grateful and so is he. We are indulging him a bit...well, maybe more than a bit. He is so lovable...some technical problems sending pictures so sending them separatelyMarcia and Richard Schaefer Delmar, New York

I took my kitties to get fixed after waiting for over 6 months due to the pandemic. All cats were healthy. A few days after coming home they all got very sick and I have now lost 6 of them 😭. I have messaged and called and they offered no help or anything. After calling numerous vets I was finally able to get them in some where and was told more then likely they contracted what they think is distemper from this place! Our family is devastated over this and we hope we dont lose anymore of our fur babies!

Zero stars. Never again will I work with this place! Was given the runaround for 4 days on a cat we were in the process of adopting. We even rushed around to get our current pet records sent to this place, per their policy, only to be told they are giving the cat to someone else! One of the workers even called me less than 24 hours ago to confirm I was still interested in the cat. They claim that they received an application for the same cat and that applicant sent in their pet records before us. This cat has been available for weeks, now all of a sudden there was another applicant. They said that there are people that dont follow through with getting their current pet records to them. We are not those type of people who dont follow through with something we said we would do! Now I have to explain to my 5 year old son who played with the cat and fell in love with it 4 days ago that we cant bring it home. Oh, and they hadnt even called the personal references I had to supply. Personal references! For a cat that nobody wanted and gave away! The staff needs to be trained on customer service and they shouldnt practically guarantee the adoption to someone if its not definite.

Great experience! Application process was reasonable & we were able to have our other dog (Oliver), whos 5 years old meet with Rico before deciding to take him on on a 2 week foster to adopt. Loved that we were able to have Rico home on a two week trial before making our final decison. The 2 week trial went great by the end and we just offically adopted Rico into our family the other day! Staff were pleasant and answered all questions we had!

Extremely disappointed with how I was treated when trying to adopt a dog here. I called before a came making sure there were no other applications in before driving an hour. When we got there we were still told no other applicants were there until another lady informed us there were. It was very disappointing after meeting the dog. We were told we would be second in line. We waited patiently even though at that point the way that lady had talked to us seemed like there wasnt any chance. Another gentlemen on the way out said not to worry it would work out and he would put in a good word for us. The next day our references were called but still no phone call. After multiple attempts to call my significant other finally got through only to be told they were choosing the first applicant. The whole experience was very misleading it was a very big let down to drive meet the dog and then be told she wasnt even available. Then calling our references made it seem hopeful but why call our references if you were choosing the first person?! It was very discouraging and upsetting. We felt almost as it was an inside job like someone there wanted the dog but we just wanted honesty. Adoption isnt always going to be ideal we know this but the way we were treated overall was misleading and hurtful. The only reason I am giving them two stars was because of the volunteer and gentlemans kindness the other female was very unpleasant. I will not be coming back nor will I recommend to anyone else!

I visited in person to meet an older dog that had been posted on Facebook. Everyone I talked to was kind, patient, and super transparent about her needs. I filled out an application to foster to adopt and within a few days brought my dogs in for a meet and greet and was able to take Harriett home. I was impressed how quick and easy the process was while still ensuring the we were well suited for each other. It was clear everyone there cared SO much about her, but I never felt pressured or anything like that. She was the best little dog and a great addition to our family, I’m so grateful that they rescued her so that her last year was spent spoiled and loved. I can’t recommend them highly enough. Once we’re ready, we’ll definitely adopt from the Hornell Area Humane Society again ❤️

We recently adopted one-year-old sister dogs Roux and Fern from HAHS. We have adopted in the past from other shelters so we’ve been through the process a couple of times before. This time the process was necessarily more complex due to the Covid-19 restrictions. The team at HAHS was very expedient and accommodating throughout the adoption process while adhering to the restrictions the shelters now have to abide by. Well done!

Personnel very rude. Application process is overly grueling. They want all animals in home to have been seen by a vet yearly whether they’re sick or not, even if they get vaccines at clinic.. Wanted me to dig up ten year old records of neutering/ spaying of all my animals. Complete vet records. I’m sorry but not many people can afford to visit vets annually with every animal. They have vaccines. They have flea, tick, heart worm, parasite protection. They go if they are sick...just like most people. But they aren’t sick. They’re very healthy It makes me mad but very sad for the poor animals who stay in a cage instead of a loving caring pet friendly home. No hate mail please. These are animals and they need homes. Why make it so hard and discouraging. There is a sixteen year old cat there that I would love to care for until she passes but I can’t because I’m apparently not good enough. It’s almost like they don’t want their animals adopted

Wish I could give them 0 stars my experience there was terrible. I adopted a dog from them a while ago and the process was easy then and he passed away just recently. I go back wanting to adopt a cat and I filled out a form and turned it in. I called a few days later and they said my application was accepted well I get there and I am all exited just to have the manager who by they way was very rude to me say that it was a mix up... no biggie a little dissapointed but thats not what I was mad about. The manager instead of saying a sincere appology about our wasted time and gas said in a rude tone sorry I wasnt the one answering the phone. I wouldnt have been so mad had she been nicer. Finally the day I had been waiting for they called and they didnt approve the application and wouldnt listen to us we technically own our house although its in my grandpas name and he doesnt live with us we pay everything and they treated it like we rented. Not only this but they had a problem with one of our cats who btw was UTD on all their shots not being to the vet. Although one of our cats was missing like 2 shots which of course I went and got done after throughout the phone call the lady proceeded to be rude with my grandma. So long story short that kitten was not able to get a home with us. I figured the lady simply didnt like me for the fact that I had dyed hair at the time the lady being the manager.Probably the only good thing I have to say about this place is that they have a dog park type area open to the public.
