K9 Obedience Training

We can’t recommend Larry enough!I had originally contacted Larry based on a referral from a close friend-and I’m so thankful we connected! We were struggling with our dogs getting along. Maxwell (8 year old beagle) lost his best friend in November and became extremely depressed. In mid January we rescued Franklin, a mixed breed puppy who required A LOT of around the clock medical care for the first two months. Between a new puppy who needed so much attention and the loss of his companion, some friction was created between the two.Larry took the time over the phone to address our concerns and set expectations, both short and long term. He was exceptionally honest and professional. We enrolled in his obedience classes as soon as we could. It was amazing to see the progress over 8 weeks! Between weekly classes and homework, they’ve blossomed! On top of training, Larry helped us make small changes to our daily routine that positively impacted both dogs. As it turns out Max LOVES to train and was extremely competitive. He’d watch Franklin do his training and eagerly wait to try to show him up! Week one Max didn’t want to enter the building but by week 4 he was RUNNING to jump on Larry’s lap as soon as we arrived. Larry was there to answer any questions we had. He takes the time to make adjustments with each dog if needed and truly cares about their well being. We can’t thank Larry enough for all he has done!

Took our 6 month old GSD pup to Larry for obedience training and reacting to every dog we saw on walks. He already knew the basic sit, down, etc which helped going in. He now can walk in heel, and stay in sit/down for at least two minutes even with a ball/toy or if one of us walks out the door, and has a relatively reliable recall. He also is way better on walks and now only barks at other dogs roughly 10% of the time. As with anything dog related, it only gets better the more time you put towards working with them outside of the classroom. We hope to take him back to Larry in the future for advanced training/tracking.

I would highly recommend Larry if you are looking for a dog trainer. I was very pleased when I first called and he explained that he does individual classes as every dog is different and cannot be trained the same. I have a 2 year old black lab and from what I was being told by others, it was too late for her to be trained. I posed that as a possible issue to Larry and he said not to worry he would have no problem training her, and he proved himself to be right. He not only trained my dog, but trained my fiancé and I as well. We now know how to read our dog as well as properly train her and deal with certain situations. She listens much better than she did in the past and knows her commands very well. My dog also took a quick liking and trusting to Larry which was very telling. My fiancé and I are all around very pleased and happy and would highly recommend K9 Obedience!

Millie just completed her basic training with Larry. He was nothing but professional and truly interested in Millie’s well being as she’s a rescue and we don’t know her past or genetics. She has come a long way in learning her basic commands and now our walks are enjoyable rather than stressful for both of us. I’ve learned through our conversations and classes that Larry has a ton of compassion for all dogs and is firm yet gentle if that makes sense. He’s open to any questions or concerns and does a great job training the owners since the end result is up to us after all. We will likely be back in the springtime for a next level training. Training with Larry was excellent! One of my coworkers recommended him to me and I am glad I took her advice. I went in on the first class with my crazy hard to control 10 week old puppy and Larry was able to give me the best training tools. After the 3rd class you can see a difference in behavior. Larry has trained all my dogs over the years and there is no one else I would trust with my kids(Dogs) other than Larry, he has done an outstanding job with all of them and my dogs love him. Thank you Larry for all you do for our Kids !!!

Larry does an amazing job! He is extremely knowledgeable, provides step by step notes and demonstrates how to communicate with your dog. I think it’s about being more patient with me- it’s about training the owner as well! This is my second lab he has trained and I highly recommend!

Larry is an amazing dog trainer. He is very honest and knows exactly how to work with every breed of dog. Within one session of training with Larry my dog was already learning it that day. Yes he is a little expensive but well worth every penny. And he cares very much about his clients any question you ask he has an answer. We brought our 4 month old puppy to Larry. It had been a long time since we were puppy parents and we needed some guidance. Larry was great at helping train our pup and train us to be as consistent as possible. Our girl absolutely loved him, we joked she would rather stay with him than leave with us. As she is young, we focused on basic puppy skills. We learned a great deal to continue moving forward with!

We came to Larry ten years ago with our first German shepherd for obedience training. We learned so much from him and our dog was so well trained, we couldn’t have been happier! It’s been a year since our buddy passed and when we finally decided to bring a new German shepherd home, we knew without question, we had to train him with Larry. We come from the Syracuse area every week, which is a big time commitment for us, but it’s absolutely worth it! We can’t wait to see where our second round of advanced training takes our pup! Can’t recommend Larry enough.

If you are willing to put in the time and work, Larry is your guy! I had never owned a puppy before and I needed help!! He taught me so much, as well as helped my pup and I grow together. My dog would not walk on a leash and would constantly nip. With the education provided by Larry, we introduced a prong collar for her. She now LOVES seeing her “necklace” come out because she knows we will be doing something fun! Once training outside, we had to switch to a shock and prong collar…(which I was very nervous about)again, Larry helped every step of the way. My dog can be off leash (and I don’t even ever have to shock her just the buzz feature)! Larry is the most compassionate human to his beloved four-legged friends. My dog loves him and always gave him kisses. I still, to this day, call Larry with any questions I have. Training and his love for my pup didn’t end after my 8 weeks of training… he is there for us no matter what and at any time of day or night!

If you are looking for a top-notch dog trainer, I can not recommend Larry Leogrande enough. Larry has been training dogs for over 20 years, and his expertise, love and patience comes through. He took the time to understand Charlie and approached the issues we were having. Charlie was a dog that pulled and would pull from my grip and run like the wind, I knew I had to do something. Larry was my lifesaver, he trained ME on how to work with Charlie. His communication is very detailed he explained homework and expectations and the importance of following the procedures for success. Each week I was pleasantly surprised with the change in Charlie he wanted to learn, he wanted to please me. Larry has a great understanding of canine behavior, and is always willing to answer questions and provide advice even today I can reach out for advice and he is always there for me. His methods are gentle and positive, every dog loves him and the results speak for themselves. Today Charlie and I can enjoy walks, he no longer tries to chase kids on bikes, or deer. This is the second dog Larry trained for us. Both were a great success! We rescued Beebe, a 2 year old Labradoodle, from a bad situation in April. She was very scared and didnt know any of the basic commands. Larry was great with her on everything from the basic stuff to helping us with car sickness to nutrition. We highly recommend him, he knows dogs!

We contacted Larry about starting puppy obedience classes for Mochi when he was about 4 months old. I was very particular about finding a trainer that was knowledgeable, patient and compassionate. Larry assured me that his methods met my criteria and even directed me to videos of his own dogs training so I could see the body language while he works with them.Mochi was already a pretty good puppy but we were still working on potty training, nipping and basic obedience that he hadnt quite learned. Larry not only addressed and navigated us through those concerns but took the time to address health, behavior, exercise and mental needs while always stressing the individuality of each dog and always having alternative plans in case Mochi didnt take to one or we felt it wasnt working. Mochi is excited for each class and his behavior is markedly improved and even gets compliments when we take him in public. His confidence is boosted and hes thriving. Weve already agreed to continue more advanced training and learned some scent training basics through Larry as we trust his expertise and that he always has Mochis best interests in mind. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is struggling or just would like to instill some better behavior and get understanding on your dog. He makes himself available and is willing to answer any questions you may have.

Larry knows what hes doing thats for sure! Very knowledgeable and understanding. After 8 weeks, our 2 year old lab is like a new pup. Larry took the time with us and always asked us if we had any questions and when we did he had the answers for us. Larry is a wealth of knowledge. There wasnt a single question my wife and I asked that he didnt immediately have an answer for. My wife and I were in over our heads with the specific breed we adopted but Larry educated us on what our specific breed needs, what to expect and how to prepare. We feel soo much more confident in dealing with the newest addition to our family. We are glad we found Larry as he came highly recommended by 2 of our closest friends. I am so happy with the progress our 1 year puppy labradoodle has made and we are not even half way through our 8 weeks with Mr. Leogrande! Our dog responded immediately to Larry. My immediate concern of her pulling and my lack of control on walks were addressed, lesson 1, before we walked out the door. Our notebook had notes on this as well as Larry schooling us on her breed, feeding and nutrition and the importance of following through on our end with our homework! She walks beautifully on her leash now, I am more comfortable with taking her out in public alone along side my special needs son which is major. Larry is always prepared, on time and his lessons help me to better understand the signals our puppy was sending. I most appreciate his welcoming of a call in between lessons when we have questions or concerns. Being a large dog breed Cane Corso we were nervous owners but Larry made the lessons easy for us and Jax. His training classes were great we both learned a lot. Gemma is a 10 month old female GSD who had a hard time listening. We had taken her somewhere else first and was a huge waste of time plus money. I went to Larry with Junior, a four-year-old German Shepherd rescue that was very antisocial and having obedience issues. As a former K9 handler, I tried everything I could think of but was not making any progress. Larry was instantly able to diagnose the problems and give me the tools needed to turn Junior around. I contacted Larry to help me train my 8-month old rescue pup based on recommendations from friends who had the personal experience of bringing their dogs to him, and I am so glad that I did!My sweet girl Sophie came to me from the Humane Society fearful of EVERYTHING (noises, inanimate objects, her leash, people, etc).While I knew how to love & baby her, I didnt know how to alleviate her fears, where to start to socialize her, or how to train her to ensure that she would become confident and feel safe in the world around her.During our initial visit, he allowed Sophie to freely explore the training facility while observing her and interacting with her when she approached, and within a short time she was seeking his attention and giving him puppy kisses...all while he spent time educating ME with a detailed foundation for our training, providing a general overall understanding of what it would entail and with homework to do with Sophie before our next meeting.Based on Sophies unique personality & needs Larry provided an individualized training plan. During our classes he demonstrated the proper way to execute the commands and guided me in the best ways to bring out the positive behaviors that we were looking for while always being supportive and reassuring to both Sophie and myself.On one occasion, Larry even brought his personal dog Lance for an outing with Sophie! She was able to shadow him and follow his lead as we walked around in a place that Sophie had been fearful of.It was a great experience for both Sophie and I as she demonstrated less fear, and with Larrys guidance we were able to approach, touch and climb on objects that we had avoided in the past!We are continuing to work with Larry to overcome fears and learn commands that will enable us to safely go everywhere together.This man has a love for, and ability to communicate with dogs~ all breeds, ages, and abilities~ and wants them all to succeed at living happy and healthy lives with their families.I will definitely recommend his training to anyone who asks!

Getting a new puppy at an older age, we forgot what having a puppy was like. We were like two grandparents spoiling a grandchild. Larry not only taught Mia May, but taught us what and how to manage her rambunctious nature. Bostons can be high maintenance. Listen to what he says. Do your homework. No one understands dogs like Larry goes. Taking Mia for a walk was a challenge lol now shes a perfect little lady when she walks on her lease and has learned not to jump all over everyone who walks in the house. I wouldnt have anyone else ever train my fur baby ❤️ He is by far the best trainer in this whole area.

I had such a great experience with Larry and K9 Obedience Training with my first dog that I knew he was the only choice when a GS/Huskie mix puppy joined the family. My first dog was a Pit mix rescue that was filled with anxiety. Larry successfully helped us conquer his separation anxiety and he is the most laid back, relaxed dog I have ever had. Larry is able to read the dogs temperament and adjust training accordingly so that it is successful for both the owner and the pet. He is flexible, honest, and there is no doubt that he loves dogs and what he does!

Larry trained my 2 goldendoodles. I had hired other trainers previous and there is definitely a difference in the professionalism I observed. If you are looking for an experienced dog trainer and want to see results for your puppy and you fast, Larry/K9 Obedience Training should be your only option.After two weeks of private 1:1 classes, our 3.5 month old Golden Retriever is already showing improvement. Any questions that we have, Larry has the answers to. He is easy to get ahold of and communicate concerns or updates to about our puppy on how she and we are handling the homework assignments he gives us after each class.Lady is becoming more confident in hearing loud noises, improving on leash pulling and no more accidents in the house with all his tips on potty training.

We called Larry when our chocolate lab was 4 months old. Our first day Larry told us that our puppy would Sit Down and Stay on the first day. Well I sure did not believe him. I was so impressed with Larry at the end of our first class…we managed all 3 jobs! Larry was so patient with me. His over 20 years of training sure shows his knowledge. Larry is an amazing trainer! We did our first course with him and our dog, Harley, a very friendly, but super excited and mischievous lab who loved to drag me around while we went on walks when he was about one year old. Larry came highly recommended by a few people at work, other dog owners we met, and even our vet! He truly knows his stuff. He’s dedicated and takes it very seriously, resulting in a great training program. You have to put in the work, and it will show! We did a second course, consisting of outdoor training specifically so we could walk Harley without a leash and working on him listening to us when we’re outside with distractions. To this day, (he’s now 7,) we get compliments on how well behaved Harley is inside the house and outside, which came in handy especially once we had kids. I would recommend K9 Obedience to anyone in the Utica and surrounding areas!!

I took my Golden Retriever puppy for training at K9 Obedience training. One thing I loved about Larrys training besides his professionalism, was the fact Larry took the time to teach you the history of dogs and why they do the things they do. When Chico and I graduated from the training, we both left smarter. Chico is 3 years old now and is a well behaved dog. I would definitely recommend people to take their dogs there for training. I saw Larry back in 2003, 2009, and 2017.Each and every-time Larry was very professional. I am as able to learn new ways to teach each dog (4 shepherds and 1 husky) all levels of obedience. On leash and off leash training. Three of the dogs were 100% off leash trained because I dedicated the time to train them. My other two dogs I did not have the time to work with them off leash as much but they will still do a come, stay, sit and so forth. On the leash all dogs are perfectly trained. A couple dogs were puppies and some were older than a year in a half when training started.

Larry was great to work with. He was extremely patient (especially with us) and very knowledgeable. We would definitely recommend him!

Larry is the best trainer you will find, hands down. He trained our first dog 7 years ago and we are back with our rescue shepherd. He takes the time to get to know both you and the dog and really listens to what each dog needs and tweaks things to make sure both you and the dog are learning. I wont take our dogs anywhere else. Larry trained our first dog, Clarke (husky mix) 6 or 7 years ago. She was 4 months old. Folks comment all the time about how well behaved she is on a leash and off-leash when we go on hikes as well. I attribute this to Larrys expertise, although he will always tell me its because of the hard work my partner and I put in to train her.I think were both right. If you are expecting someone else to do your training for you, dont call Larry. What Larry will do is assess the behavior or your dog, listen to your needs and goals, then he will train YOU. Its up to you to put the work in based on Larrys customized training plan. I promise you, if you follow the plan and do your homework, your dog will be successful and you will have built the most beautiful bond with your dog.We now have a 2nd dog in training with Larry. Rocky is a 3 y/o German and Aussie shepherd mix we rescued. As soon as we got him, we called Larry. Training this dog has been a different experience than our first dog, but Larry knows how to adapt to the dog, especially a shepherd. I have no doubt Rocky will be as well behaved and well trained off leash (ultimate freedom for your dog!) as Clarke is when we finish our sessions with Larry. We didnt have to have him as a puppy to achieve this. Throw old dogs cant learn new tricks out the window. You just need a good trainer!

We adopted Queenie and knew right away she needed some training. Larry came highly recommended by quite a few people. Larry is a top-notch dog trainer and a great human! We learned a lot while having our puppy Doberman trained and have continued to use the techniques into adulthood. Our dog is still intact and has remained controllable using what we have learned. Dobermans are very high strung and ours is no exception. Having knowledge of what to do in certain situations is key to owning a well-behaved dog. Larry can teach you how to properly train any breed of dog. His techniques work very well. It is up to the owner to follow through and it takes patience along with a lot of dedication. We will likely bring our Doberman back for some advanced training in the near future and will certainly recommend Larry to everyone we know if they need dog training.

Our pup was a challenge, but with Larrys help he has become a better dog and we have become better dog owners. While our dog was a challenge, I was as well, but I was able to learn along with Harley. Larry is hands down the best around! I went to another trainer before finding him and they had no idea how to work with my dog - he’s not food motivated so he’s super hard to train. Larry actually understands that every dog is different and knows how to tailor the training accordingly. My dog has been doing basic training and has already learned how to walk on a leash, heel, automatic sit, stay, down, down/stay, and recall. And I’ve learned how to handle my dog, give proper commands, read his body language, keep his attention, etc. When I’m not understanding or getting something, Larry has no problem tailoring “my training” too. Other trainers would just watch me struggle and keep making me do the same thing over and over again. From day one, it’s been clear that he knows his stuff and is an actual professional trainer. We’ve already signed up for another course because we’ve been so happy with the results!

Larry is the best dog trainer in CNY! I have 2 Pitbulls , a German Shepard pitbull mix named bandit and a coonhound pitbull mix named nova! He was absolutely wonderful with my dogs! This is the best place to get your dog trained. We noticed an immediate change in our puppies actions from day one. We liked it so much we that we signed up for the advanced course. Our dog did very well in the basic course. Larry is very knowledgeable in his training technique. You can tell he has been doing this for a very long time. So if you need your dog trained this is the place to go and you can usually tell we people go back multiple times and he has a waiting list.

My dog is a 150lb German shepherd who has serious anxiety and bites out of fear. I was expecting to have to put him down (2bites on record) but this training saved his life! He is now 2 years out of training but we still work daily at the skills I learned. The trainer is extremely gentle, the training is excellent! My 6 month old Cane Corso attends training at the facility and he has learned obedience and discipline and the trainer has helped me with potty training as well.

I just(4/8/17) completed the 8 week course with my German Shepard Puppy Honey. It was the smartest thing I have ever done, after having raised 9German Shepards in the last 50 years....slow learner!! My VET, who recommended Larry was right....hes a pro, that knows his stuff... He knows dogs and people as well. After all, he trains us as well. Now its up to me to keep Honey growing. A+

My husband and I first came to Larry to help our 1.5 y.o. GSD with his protective behavior (because I was newly pregnant) and to improve his overall obedience. Needless to say, Larry not only helped us train Archer with his basic obedience, but we also reduced his reactive protective behavior. His training worked so well that we then signed up Archer for his advanced obedience course for off leash training. Larry helped bring out the best in our pup.
