We adopted little Pumpkin two weeks ago and we are so happy we made that decision. The shelter was so nice and everything is so clean. All the staff there were friendly and helpful, they go through every single thing in detail and also send pumpkin’s history to me right away. Pumpkin is so adorable and playful, she always full of energy and loves to run like bunnies at home. The first few days at home were an adjustment for us, but now she becomes a best friend of her big brother, Jimmy. I truly encourage anyone thinking about getting a pet to adopt, you can get a chance to visit “Best Friends Animal Society ”, you will love there.

I went there to find a cat and had a wonderful experience I was extremely nervous and multiple people told me about the cats their personality. It was a great experience. You can even go in just to pet the cats! I adopted a wonderful cat Katniss with the help of a worker Jasmine she was wonderful and went above and beyond. I also love the fact this place takes in the overflow from other shelters. All the animals are so cared for and vaccinated, fixed, and chipped! They have adoption events and you can even foster to adopt. Really a wonderful experience and I cant thank Jasmine enough for all her help.

Had a wonderful Foster and Adoption experience here. I started fostering Fly and then decided to adopt him last month. All the staff at the shelter were very friendly and nice (compared with some bad experiences I had at another shelter, will not say the name here). The foster team (Leah) was really helpful and I can tell they truly cared about the animals. Also they responded to my emails very fast.

I went to another shelter nearby that required you to make sure every member of the household sees the cat before you can adopt them, along with a very high adoption fee. I found this absolutely ridiculous. I then went to Best Friends, and had a very smooth adoption process. They even sat down with me and went over her health history (every single detail, line by line) and how to feed and take care of her. No hassle and no fuss whatsoever. She has been a great member of the household for 3+ months. Thank you, Best Friends, for saving so many lives.

After wanting a kitten/young cat for a while I stumbled upon this place & went on a Friday after work. First, the staff is so so sweet, knowledgeable & attentive. The place just has such calming feels & the cats are all so well cared for! I found this shy small 1 year old little cat who I knew would slowly blossom. It’s only been a week & me & my family are obsessed with her! She is so sweet, loving & chill :) The application process was such a breeze & I’m so happy I adopted from them & get to love her forever

They lied about the cat condition and the cat has mites (scabies) that can spread to people. The cat is hostile and bite my 5 year old child. The cat has not ate anything today and is also not the correct age. Never do anything same day because it’s a scam. Look at the other reviews. This is an awful mess. I have to remove the cat from my home. The cat becomes extremely agitated when I try to place it back in the carrier. Horrible experience

I adopted a beautiful mixed breed named Sophie and we couldn’t be happier. We adopted her 2/24 for 14$, we were stoked being as we were dying to have a puppy for about a year now but didn’t want to spend too much. The wait was about more than two hours to complete the adoption process. Some of the helpers know more of certain animals than others so just be sure to ask multiple people about an animal. That is one of the reasons I removed a star, now the other star comes from them telling us that Sophie has a small cough but not to worry it was due to her collar and her spayed collar. We said okay no problem and took her home. As days pass we notice she’s having trouble breathing and has mucus as though she had a cold of some sort. On 02/28 I take her to get her last vaccines that was needed at Petco just to be told I have to take her to an actual vet because she has a respiratory infection in which I had to pay total close to 500$ to get seen ASAP and get her treated. I reached back out so that they can at least acknowledge it was wrong on their part and that they would check the other dogs in case it’s the same case. Now I’m stuck thinking what sickness an animal may come with from a shelter due to this experience. Be cautious and make sure to ask a lot of questions! Besides the inconvenience we love our Sophie and she is truly a doll.

Very disappointing experience coming here. I went in with a friend to see the dogs, I expressed interest in a dog, even if just to foster. Very few people working in back could answer questions about him. I asked about taking him out. Nothing happened. I asked about fostering him and was told “you don’t get to choose a dog to foster, you sign up to foster and they match you with a dog”. Then I asked at the front what his story was, was kind of dismissed and no one expressed any sort of positive response to me being interested in helping this little guy out, so I left as it felt like no one wanted to help me or that poor pupper. (Aside from the one girl in back who told me he was her favorite) really disappointing.

Lou was a very traumatized and scared cat but they could tell that he was a sweetheart who just needed time, and they were completely right. During the adoption process, they were so on top of things despite operating during the pandemic, and the entire process was seamless and stress-free. They made sure we were well-informed and provided care guides, and they obviously care so much about animals and finding them caring, loving homes (shoutout to Kristen!!)

Firstly I adopted my cat several months ago around May. I am also a biracial person of color. There was a lady there who seemed very headstrong to the point it made me uncomfortable (I won’t mention her name here.) She was uninterested in any small talk about the cat or the other animals, and acted as if my questions were bothersome. She even tried to convince me not to get a cat after I expressed that originally I wanted a kitten telling me “don’t get the cat because you feel bad for it.”As if my main purpose for getting her after thinking about it was because I felt pity or something. She also said it wasn’t a great idea because we eventually may want a kitten in the future later on. This made me very uncomfortable, because how she assumed she knew my reasoning for wanting to adopt a pet and acted as if I weren’t knowledgeable about cat ownership. My partner who looks white got a more cheerful persona from her. She was less headstrong with him and seemed to actually engage with him more vs treating me like I was a kid who didn’t know what I was doing. She even focused on talking to him more and would sometimes ignore me to where I would have to repeat myself. Not only do I believe that I was treated differently due to my skin complexion, but I also feel that had it not been for my partner we wouldn’t have been able to adopt our adorable cat due to me not looking “white”.Secondly the young man who finally helped us was amazing and actually genuinely seemed to care for the animals, not only did he make small talk about his own pets, but he seemed passionate about working here. Now down to my other issue. They never told us that the cat was sick. We adopted her and we were told she was on medicine for pain due to her getting spayed. The moment we walked out she already had some mild discharge in her eyes which we didn’t think was anything because we were told she was alright and cleared for adoption. As soon as we got home she was sneezing with snot spraying everywhere with even more discharge in her eyes as if she was cleaned up before she was placed on display for adoption to make it seem like she was ok. Even though we isolated her as soon as we saw signs of her being sick it was already too late. She was around the other cats and all of our things. We couldn’t get a vet appointment until two days later and when we finally got her to them they told us she had some form of conjunctivitis and a respiratory infection. Not only did I have to pay a ton of money for the vet and medicine, but a few days later she got me and my 6 year old sick as well. Both of us had gotten conjunctivitis similar to our new cat and both of us began to have respiratory issues. While my daughter is fine now, I am still battling it due to having asthma.Fast forward to today 7/6/24 and both of my other cats despite separating them are sick now as well. So thank you not only do I have to fork over 100s of dollars to make sure all my cats are fine and healthy due to you guys not telling me about the adopted one being sick, but I also had to take several trips to the hospital for myself and my child causing her to miss school. Being sick has also caused me to have breathing difficulties. We love our new cat, the entire family does, and so do our other cats. She loves it here as well, however her sickness should have been handled by you guys before clearing her for adoption or at least a warning would have been nice so that I could have immediately isolated her away from the other animals until we were able to get to a vet.

All of the dogs and cats in here look like they are on death row. I adopted here and I had a very bad experience. The staff did not help me when I reached out to them, I tried to request assistance and I was ignored. They even tell you that they have no idea whether or not the cats and dogs are healthy. It’s almost like they are picking them up Off the street and putting them on display for the public. You have no idea what you’re getting with these people. I have always felt like it is always a good thing when an animal is adopted, but if you’re not able to give them good medical care and clean them up, handing them off to somebody else only to encounter age gigantic veterinary bill, which is what happened with me, that’s just not the right thing to do.

It has taken me almost a week to be able to even compose myself to write this review – my family & I were so traumatized last Sunday. We adopted a kitten on June 30, she was soo quiet & cute –allegedly she’d just been spayed, but we were told she was in great health -although she looked quite lethargic. The volunbteer said she’d recover & get acclimated to our home within a few weeks. But within a few days – I knew something was wrong. She wasn’t coming out from under the bed -she was only eating a little, and she wasn’t using her litter box – we have 2 kids and 2 other cats, so she was surrounded by love and care 24/7.July 9 I made the first of what would become many attempts at contacting the Shelter, only receiving ONE response throughout the month we had her.She became more & more reclusive – but the shelter said it was because of her spay surgery – and that she needed to acclimatize to our home – They NEVER recommended a vet – so I began buying special foods, nutrients, everything I could to try and help. The shelter said they’d follow up on her progress, but never did.Despite my efforts, she began loosing more weight (she was skinny to begin with)-she looked gaunt from day one. I sent 5 emails over the course of the month, expressing my concerns, her not eating, loosing weight, her stool was not normal, ect -even asking if they had a vet they’d recommend-the shelters response was a joke-telling me to leave her isolated so that she’d acclimatize easier to our home-& to leave more litterboxes around the room.We even bought a camera to monitor her movements day&night.HOWEVER-Last Sunday we left the house in the morning and when I came back she was lying in the kitchen practically fainted, when I took her in my lap she started to convulse and couldnt breathe-I could barely scream to my husband I was soo shocked. We raced to the emergency vet hospital-only to watch as the vet worked on her limp body for 2 hours-only to tell us she’d been sick for a long time-she had organ failure & infections-she should have come in months ago.She was suffering & it was better to humanely let her go.We had 10 minutes to say goodbye to a kitten that we had fell in love with. It was the WORST DAY of my LIFE! It was even worse having to tell my children, my daughter is still devastated! Ontop of having to pay 1300 at the vet only to have to watch her die!most people seek adoption to give a home with love and safety to animals, never imagining that they would adopt out to us a sick cat! Only to die 4 weeks later of what could have been prevented with the bare minimum of care! This place simply took away my kittens chance to live, she was only 3 years old, what vet did you get to give her a clean bill of health? She was sickly when we got her, a moron could have seen this! The contract we were given was the biggest joke-not being responsible for adopting out a sick animal?!? How could you even think to do that and then hide behind this joke of a contract? Total negligence. Taking all responsibility off the shelter – when in this case it was clearly the shelters negligence is sinful!what kind ofworld do we live in where this can happen?Shelters are supposed to PROTECT animals, not neglect them!Where’s the clause that protects adopters from their psychological trauma of having to see a neglected animal suffer and die after only a few weeks?Ive been home from work for 2 days bc I cant sleep- I keep remembering her looking at me, and I keep remembering her in the little room waiting to be sacrificed.I cant sleep since Sunday,I cant eat, imagine what you did with my mental health, with the mental health of my children ?? How many animals are still going out sick to people? I posted a picture – this is the image burned into my mind now. And my kids! You should be ashamed of yourself. Who will help with our trauma? Who will protect this from happening to others? What a joke

Never again would I ever adopt ANYTHING here - we adopted a cat that they said was 3 years old - although it looked soo abused and unhealthy as if it has not eaten in months - and they said it has just gotten spayed - we already had 2 cats and figured on more wouldnt be a bad thing - and they made everything seem soo easy! We adopted the cat without any issue - never asked us anything - barely had to fill out paperwork - EVERYTHING WAS TOO SIMPLE - and now I understand why - you get what you pay for. Now I understand why some animal shelters almost put you through a rigorous background check before you adopt the cat, or dog, - but this place was soo easy and fast - compared to all other places it just seemed a little weird. But we were also trying to help, by adopting another cat -we had good intentions - so we adopt her and right off the bat, before we even left the adoption center, the cat seemed lathargic. Super lethargic. You want to think positive and perhaps it was just a bit nervous, it had just gotten spayed so maybe it wasnt feeling that great - and they said she was 100% healthy and ready for adoption. But instantly, upon arriving home, we knew something was wrong. The cat just hide under the head and never really ate anything. My wife emailed and called the adoption place 4-5 times over the first 3 or 4 weeks and all they said was everything is fine, the cats just acclimating the the new house they never recommended going to a vet - NOTHINg! We came home one day after we had the cat about 4 weeks and it was limp, on the floor barely breathing. We rushed it to the hospital only to find out it had organ failure and had been sick for a long time!!! The vet said it should have been seen months ago. We spend 1300 only to find out the cat died, not to mention punitive damages that our kids will not suffer due to having to explain to them their new cat died already!!! Let me tell you something - this place SHOULD NEVER adopt animals that arent healthy. I will be meeting with my attorney and will be seeking the money we spent back in court / I dont care how many healthy animals this place might adopt- it was obvious this cat wasnt healthy from day one and they did nothing!! And they said nothing! And they recommended - when asked - that we do nothing!!! Insanity! Never again. If you cant run a decent shelter - adoption center - then you shouldnt be in this business. Its just that simple.

On Dec 9th, my beloved Jigglypuff passed away after her battle with illness, she was only 8 years old. I was devastated and the grief was overwhelming. Everyday I wake up to an endless loop of nightmare and guilty, you always question what if when something like this happens. 6 weeks later, I decided to adopt another cat because grief is just love with nowhere to give.I have been looking at Petfinder and Bestfriend NYC for a good 3 weeks, originally I decided to adopt this cat named Link, but unfortunately he has some health issue and was not able to meet and greet human. This is when I laid my eyes on Ruby, a gorgeous 5 year old calico who looked so sad being in her cage, you can see in her eyes that all she needs is someone to give her love and a forever home. I picked her up the same day with no hassle at all from the shelter. I am so glad I did because she turns out to be so loving and affectionate, she always want to be petted and be around me. Even though I saved her from living in a shelter, she actually saved me from my further descend into sorrow and depression. It has been a week now and I am so happy that I adopted her, the amount of love Ive shown her, she returned 10 fold.Thank you BestFriends NYC for caring and giving these helpless animals another chance for a loving home. The staffs here are exceptionally knowledgeable about every single cats there and their needs, and theyre so kind and patient in answering all my questions. The place is extremely tidy and clean too, which is always a great first impression when you enter a new place.TLDR: Please adopt, do not buy from a breeder, you are saving an animals life by giving them a second chance, and they will forever be grateful to you.

I came here twice in the past few days in hopes of possibly adopting or fostering a cat. The interiors are bright, spacious, clean, and modern, and according to the staff, they were designed by an animal behavioral specialist. There are two rooms of cats, and typically they only let one party into each room at a time, so you might have to wait around. Theres a kitten nursery that you can peer into through the glass walls, but theyre not up for adoption and you cant go in. Volunteers Lisa and Kyoko are especially sweet and kind.

You will then take a survey and get stuff signed by parents or guardian that is that age of over 18. Once you choose your pets(s) they will tell you everything about the pet or pets of its medical info and recommendation of eating and veterinarians things. It’s so relaxing and peaceful there. I wanted to share my horrible foster experience with Best Friends, over which Im still grieving over, and I cant even imagine what the dog must be feeling.Sometime around December last year, as a test drive to see what life would be like with a dog, I signed up to be a foster for Best Friends. It was surprising how easy it was, just a video session, and youre good to go. First it took forever to get a response from them, then the scheduling was a nightmare. They sometimes would call or write back 3 times to change when I need to pick the pups up or drop them off, and always at times that I told them would be inconvenient for me. I went along with it, thinking maybe it was just disorganized because its run by overwhelmed volunteers. Then I picked up 2 puppies, Trevor and Tulip (brown and black dog, respectively). They said these two are siblings and Ill leave you to be the judge of that. It is also highly suspicious as there was another foster request for a basenji mix puppy that did not receive any takers, and I saw another puppy pair with again dissimilar looking siblings, where the black puppy is a splitting image of Tulip. I told them that these two puppies only fight with each other and it is a bad idea to keep them together. But they were very firm on always having foster parents keeps puppies in twos.Regardless, this is how I came to meet Tulip, the sweetest and cutest puppy Ive ever met. Everyone of my friends and coworkers that have met her told me theyve thought about her after shes gone. She is quiet, well-behaved, and mild-tempered (with everyone that plays with her and pats her). This is why despite the fact that shell grow to be a massive dog, I put in an adoption request for her. Then the foster org acted up again. I had to return the pups to fly home for Christmas break. They told me I couldnt foster the pups back after the girl that fostered here over Christmas returned her. And the latest foster parent gets first priority in the adoption request, so Id have to wait until she is up for adoption, which just needed the spay surgery. But then on the day of the spay surgery news broke out that both puppies have been tested positive for distemper and need to be re-quarantined. Which I found suspicious again, because the distemper tests came back clean under my foster so did they catch it while at the shelter?Regardless, by the time Tulip was ready for adoption it was already 2 months after I fostered her. The correspondent told me that shes sorry but the latest foster family has decided to take her (while going on vacation, like I did). I was relieved and was planning on getting a puppy elsewhere. Then she called me 2 days later to say that the other foster family changed their mind and that shes available the next day. Yes I understood by that point that this was a power play but a bunch of disgruntled and underpaid staff deciding to make themselves feel more important at the expense of the puppies, but who cares as long as Tulip is okay? Then came Tulip, two months later and twice as big, and no longer trusting of humans. She now has nightmares when she sleeps :`(, shaking and quickened breathing. And she growls at my friends that used to hold her. What kind of people abuse cute trusting puppies, and sign up to foster them :`(?Tulip now had separation anxiety (she howls whenever I leave the room) and several behavioral issues and also didnt listen to me anymore. Im sharing the before and after photo to distinguish the loss of hope and optimism in the dogs eyes that is heart breaking. I have my faults at dog rearing too, but a foster organization is supposed to save dogs from abusive situations and not sending them into traumatizing situations.I wanted to share my traumatizing experience with people who shame others for going to breeders and not adopting: perhaps do something to fix the shelter pipeline issue first, so they are not run like cheap options for folks who cant afford pure-breeds.

A month ago I adopted a beautiful short hair from this shelter named Frankie (I renamed him) and could not be happier. I highly recommend coming here if you are looking to adopt an animal, especially cats. I was impressed by how many options they had and how attentive the staff was. I also appreciated that even though they let groups into the rooms one at a time, when I expressed interest in my particular cat they assured me that I had first dibs since I had seen him first. I was able to adopt him the same day since I brought a carrier with me. Around a week or so after I took him home, they even sent a pet friendly cake to celebrate his adoption!

Not to be dramatic, but I literally met my best friend here. My little boy was this skittish feisty little kitten when I first met him in the summer. But with patience and a loving environment he’s transformed into the world’s biggest cuddle bug.The shelter is super well-kept and gorgeous with the adoption process being a breeze. I was able to take my baby home in less than an hour. I respected how considerate the workers were of my cat’s feelings when I asked to hold him, assuring me that it would take some time until he was comfortable enough to let me. It taught me how to navigate the greeting stage in a way that wouldn’t stress him out, and he got comfortable with me within days. I will always be grateful to Best Friends Lifesaving Center for helping connect me with my lifelong soulmate and I will be looking to adopt here in the future! 🐈‍⬛

The person who helped me was nice & the place seemed clean & respectable. But - very sad because I adopted a kitten who I was told was having tummy issues because he was having difficulty adjusting, but was otherwise completely healthy. Have only had him a week & so far spent a pretty penny trying to get him better, as the shelter seemingly declined all testing & further medical examinations to make sure he was fully OK before adopting him out. Poor thing couldn’t stop puking or pooping & it was obvious it was more than an adjustment issue. Seems like negligence on the shelter’s part & an annoying situation to be in.

After other treatments she had a fever we even went to vet but nothing happened and they told us she might have issue with heart and her legs! We were just waiting to adopt her after being spayed and bring her to our vet and take the xray and ekg but unfortunately we just stuck and come to you and you got her from me because she need to isolated for “ringworm” and you think for fever you gonna checked better instead of us. That night you called us and said she is fip and made the decision to euthanize her the same night without giving us even ONE day and any opportunity searching treatment options and now i see so many cats saved from fip after treatment. I am thinking that night over and over want to change everything. We constantly feel guilty about the choice you made us make. She still could be here and you didnt care at all.

A fantastic facility that cares for their pets. In regards to a negative review recently left, that person clearly posted on Nextdoor that they did not answer the phone when Best Friends tried to call them about their pet. They provided no way to contact them, its clearly written on the records. When I called them out about it they used the fact I had cancer as a way to get an upper hand. They pretty much verbally attacked anyone that spoke up against their clear lack of responsibility. Clearly not written by a halfway decent person. It is such a shame that people go out of their way to demean a business that does amazing work because of their poor decisions!Im both in vet medicine and have adopted from Best Friends, although it was a few years ago. In my vet med career I’ve often had to interact with staff during transport of animals or referred cases. Every interaction is pleasant, thorough, and every decision made is with deep thought and consideration for every animal. The team puts their, quite literally, blood sweat and tears into what they do. If you choose to adopt, they will hold your hand every step of the way. And they will communicate with you, as long as you answer your phone! 🙄

Let me first off by saying, they are not a good adoption/donation business. The cat we got, he is so loving 24/7. They don’t know anything about the cats there at all. They literally interrogate you and talk down on you as if you’ve never owned/took care of a cat before.I, regrettably, remember both of their names who gave REALLY bad customer service. First one is Diane. She talked down on my significant other as if she was below her and didn’t know anything about cats. She has the most nastiest attitude you could ever hear/see. Maybe they need to do a better job at the hiring process/orientation. These cats deserve WAY better than what they have there. The only good thing that came out of giving them business is that we got the most loving cat. If we wouldn’t have took him, he wouldn’t have been saved at all. Poor thing 😢The last volunteer who was rude, her name is Kay. She talked like she didn’t know anything about cats, she talked down on me as if I’ve never had a cat before. I grew up with cats I know how they are & how to take care of them.Somebody needs to shut them down and have the cats go to a different animal shelter or get a better volunteer program. If you want to adopt an animal, make sure you don’t have interaction with Diane or Kay. These people just want to get rid of the animals. On the listing of the cat I adopted, they said she was 5 years old. On THEIR paperwork, they said she was 5 years old. When I adopted her, they sent me her previous medical report which said she was 10 years old. Im aware that these shelters and agencies cant tell 100% how old these rescue animals are, but 5 and 10 years old is a BIG difference, and the fact that they knew that she was older than what they were advertising is misleading and cruel. Ive had my cat for two years now and she has developed heart issues and Im spending thousands of dollars to keep her alive. No thanks to Best Friends Animal Society. Beware.

I was considering adopting two cats this summer, and I began my in-person search here. The location is very easy to get to; just a short walk from the NQR line. I brought my children along, and the staff were warm, friendly, and welcoming. They were knowledgeable about all the cats up for adoption and were patient and generous with the play and petting time my kids could have with the cats. The facility itself is well lit, nicely decorated, and very clean. The cats appear to be reasonably happy (they would be much happier in forever homes, of course!), and well taken care of.The adoption process, as I understand it, is a little less invasive than some of the other rescue agencies Ive connected with, and the volunteers and coordinators are very upbeat and non-judgmental. I think this is a wonderful place to look if you are in search of a furry friend, as they offer a pleasant, low-stress way of connecting with your new BFF. If youre not looking for a pet right now, do consider donating supplies or money here; from what Ive seen, it will likely go to good use.

Update 10:29: Never heard from BFFC ever again. They obviously never had any intentions of fixing their mistake and should be looked into because it’s not the first time they have changed the ages on the animals.Update 7/16: on 5/22 my email was found in the spam folder by the marketing team and I was told it was being sent to their director for follow-up and I haven’t heard anything at all since then. I had high hopes that BFLC would be able to correct this error on their part but I guess it will not be possible.*************Update 5/10: although BFLC has reached out through this review, I have emailed them twice since then and have not received any type of response.*************I adopted my cat a little over a year ago. We were told Mittens was a 5 mth old kitten, and their paperwork reflected that. However, recently I noticed that the paperwork had records of her being in the Atlantic County Animal Shelter in NJ and she was filed at 5 yrs old. It makes sense she’s an older cat because she has not grown or gained weight, she has stayed at her petite 7lbs in the 1+ year she has been with us. We don’t love her any less for this but it can be dangerous to mark a 5 yr difference on an animal since once they reach their senior yrs, their nutrition has to change, as well as health concerns. Also, she had severe gingivitis which developed into stomatitis and we had to proceed with a full mouth dental extraction which was not cheap, and this is something we were also not informed of at the time of adoption.Besides the complete misinformation on our lovely Mittens, the workers of the center are very respectful and love the work they do, which can be felt from the moment you step in. Despite Mittens not being the kitten we were looking for at the time, we would have chosen her regardless, as she chose us in the first place.I kindly ask of Best Friends to be extremely careful and double check when it comes to an animal’s profile.

I saw that post on Nextdoor, so I figured Id drop by here to share my thoughts about the situation with Millie the cat. Its a shame how some folks have been acting, and its clear as day that the shelter bears responsibility. You see, these shelters are meant to care for animals, no matter where they come from, especially those in need of a new home. Now, Ive taken a gander at that memo, and its quite evident that miscommunication and some shady dealings played a part in poor Millies untimely demise. They even went ahead and disposed of the body after they found out the previous owner was keeping tabs on them. This here situation calls for the involvement of the police and law enforcement. Im not entirely sure if the owner can see this message, as the comment section on Nextdoor seems to have been shut down already.

It’s like storage mixed with a petshop feel. Definitely not safe for all the animals with all vents being covered with boxes and laundry . As a side note driving away all of the good people who worked there as volunteer or workers . It is evident how much they care for the animals, making certain that each one is safe and happy. Many rescues that Ive worked with in the past are overwhelmed and disorganized. This is not the case with Best Friends. Donuts paperwork was detailed and up to date. Each pet is neutered/spayed and microchipped before adoption. The facility is clean, modern and monitored 24 hours (not open to the public 24 hours). Peter - Donuts thanks you for her stuffed animal tiger! It was such a great experience. Fantastic place to adopt a pet, especially adult cats. You can hang out with multiple cats in an open space (they have two rooms that house the cats together plus some cat “condos” that open into the rooms for the cats that do better alone). This allows you to play, interact, and really get a sense for their personalities (within the limits of a non-home environment). This is in contrast to pet fairs or ACC. You also get to see multiple cats without asking to see each one or visiting multiple foster homes. The center also doesn’t place children/age restrictions on many cats, unlike the Manhattan ASPCA. Lastly, the process of adopting really seems geared to helping the pets find homes, as if they actually want people to adopt them rather than making it a challenging experience to get to know and adopt a pet that is a good fit.

So I remember my first experience with this place was when I was a senior in highschool and I had made a 2 hour trip to view the selection. The second I stepped in I was promptly told to leave as I looked too young to be able to adopt. I assured them I was 18 and they told me they dont want their time wasted and I was free to come back with my parents some other day. I was so upset the whole way home, I never forgot the name of the place because from that day on I stopped my search for a cat, I was that discouraged. Years later, I decide to try again and I purposefully avoided this place up until I found a number of kittens I was really interested in. I applied, thinking perhaps the place had changed, I had been applying every now and then before and during quarantine but havent been getting any responses. I call one day wondering if they were open to the public to try and increase my chances of getting a cat but when the lady had picked up and was answering my questions she seemed so confused and unable to answer most of them. She had even let it slip that cats are placed on a first come first serve basis, so I would have to put in multiple applications to increase my chances since alot of applications are not even opened. This really made me question the way things are run at this place. Would not recommend.

First off the animals are well taken care of and the place and the animals are clean to the touch 👏, i highly recommend this place no fault here!On the other hand, the adoption supervisor puts you through an interrogation process which takes 45 min and grills you like your going to use the animal in some sort of ceremonial sacrifice👎. Trust me, theres plenty of animals out there for free if that were the case unfortunately👎.The volunteers or paid animal handlers become too attached which isnt very beneficial because you literally have to tear the animal from the clutches of their grasp and especially when the main objective is to find a home for these poor animals. .The head staff members need to develope better social skills with humans!! and stop ego tripping because its a total turn off. I opted to adopt a cat from a nearby shelter instead because the vibe here was such a turn off. I understand that the pets needs are paramount and to find a good home is essential and to lesson or eliminate the possibility of them being returned or even abused but if a person tells you that theyve had cats/pets for over 30 years you might want to consider that theyre more than qualified to care for them even if your capacity for understanding is limited to the psychology and well being of animals and not humans.

My boyfriend and I were able to adopt this sweetie. He went in himself as I was too busy to accompany him however I assisted him virtually. For starters there wasn’t many options of pets to choose from. Also keep in mind my partner is a person of color. He was originally assisted by someone who I felt was discriminating against him. She insisted none of the animals would be a great match for him and he should just forget about it and come back some other time. Any cat he showed interest in she would shoot down and tell him why she thought the cat would not be compatible with him. Eventually someone else came along and helped us with our choice. We chose an adorable cat! However there was a mix up and the cat that was displayed in the picture was a completely different one that looked similar but was actually 4 years older and of the opposite sex. I was confused on how they managed that so we considered another option. We chose our perfect fur baby and despite trying to be deterred from getting her and told she would not work well with us she immediately made herself at home. She’s so sweet and affectionate and gentle with our 2 year old. And very social. We were able to get her for free and only paid for her carrier. They also had a variety of pet necessities that were quite affordable. The gentleman that assisted us was very patient and helpful! Experience overall was meh but we got a little cutie out of it.

Note: The following is a review on their volunteer program.Ive tried to volunteer with Best Friends for TWO YEARS but to no avail. Not only is their volunteer portal and calendar user-unfriendly and in need of major updating, but their orientation process was TERRIBLE. Registering was easy, and included watching an introductory web presentation. But in order to be authorized to volunteer, you had to complete another web orientation as well. Youd sign up and get zero reminders about which orientation youd signed up for, or youd be eternally on waitlists with other people going thru the same process as you every week with no sense of actual ranking, or youd show up for the scheduled orientation and nothing was happening. This went on for months, so I finally emailed them and said hey, this is ridiculous, can you just email me the presentation?? Which they did. Hallelujah! But then the next headache emerged: all volunteers had to take mandatory shadow training. New rule. I was eager to sign up and finally get this ball rolling. I even signed up for a date with a waitlist and a date with availability, just to increase my odds of getting in. I get a reminder email that Im confirmed for the upcoming training--great! Im excited this is finally going to happen. I clear my afternoon schedule at work, make sure Im wearing proper attire, etc. and I go in only to find out that theres no training, in fact, its been cancelled and nobody notified me! Not only that, when they went to check the book to see what happened, it showed that I was actually waitlisted for that days training. Wait--so you sent me a confirmation email telling me to show up on time, blah blah blah, for a session I wasnt even confirmed for, and then cancelled it but then also neglected to tell me? I sent a pretty frustrated email advising them of their scheduling issues and even recommended they develop some kind of backup process for last minute notifications--e.g. just send a text since youve got all our phone numbers, or advise volunteers to call prior to each shift to confirm...something. The response I got was basically so sorry this has never happened before, well try and do better, and would you like to sign up for our next availabile training? Grudgingly I said yes, and signed up for it right away. Minutes after signing up I got an email saying there was a mistake and that the session actually had to be moved to a different time slot, which I could not longer make. And that was the final straw for me.The sad part is that this was meant to be a healing experience for me, given that my beloved cat had passed away not too long before. I was so amazed by how unorganized they were that I even offered to help. My career has afforded me with strong project management, organization, and problem-solving skills and its literally my job to figure out ways to increase efficiency and improve processes and workflow, but that offer was ignored. Anyway, the stress and wasted energy of just trying to volunteer in the limited free time I did have has completely soured my experience with Best Friends. Their mission is amazing, but their volunteer program sucks.

Amazing experience as a new foster, they give you lots of help, resources and supplies to make the foster stay a success and not a huge financial burden. They are doing amazing things for the animals they rescue.

I adopted a cat and they told me his eye was swollen for a non medical reason and it would go away. A few days later, I have a $400 vet bill for infections in the eyes and lungs. I called the shelter BEFORE going to the vet to see if their vet could take and look and they said he was my responsibility and, despite the issue being documented prior to me adopting, they wouldnt help with a vet visit or any of the vet bill.

I would give them a four if they spent less money on marketing and more money on animals. Id give them a four and a half if they didnt create the pit bull initiative.Because of them, we have a human fatality every ten days due to the misleading falsehoods spread which state pit bulls can be safe pets.I know no one who hasnt been negatively affected by a pit bull type terrier dog.A rose by any other name...

The women at entrance didnt let me see any animal to they only had one cat when I ask to see her to see if i adopt her she said no you cant . It seems that they jaill that one cat and not letting people adopt because they properly get donation $ from people at same time keeping that only one cat they have jailed to make money out of it . She was also rude
