My partner and I got our first dog together from Muddy Paws a couple of years ago and we couldn’t be happier. We went to one of their adoption events near the Flatiron Petsmart after we submit our application online. I was surprised by how easy and seamless the process was, while still thorough. We had originally tried applying at a different local rescue and our experience with them was awful. But Muddy Paws volunteers are so kind, passionate, and understanding. We were originally there to meet a dog that we had seen online, but during our meet and greet it didn’t feel like the right fit. We asked to see another dog on a whim there, they quickly entered it into their system and brought him out to meet us. He melted in my arms and we knew he was the one! He’s the sweetest boy and has turned out to be an incredible dog. They rescued him from a kill shelter in Kentucky and now I can’t imagine life without him. Thank you, Muddy Paws!

Adopting through Muddy Paws was a breeze for me! I found a new best friend a few months ago and the process went really smoothly. The form that you fill to register is a bit lengthy, but once you get through it, it happens so fast. I found myself going on their website to look at their available dogs, and when I saw Weston, I sent an email right away. I was a bit slow and I was second on the waitlist for him, but fate had other plans and I got bumped to first after the previous person cancelled. I met him and got to walk him around the block, then the staff there were available if I had any questions. After paying the fee, he officially became a member of my family and he’s been such a wonderful addition! This is the first pet I’ve ever had and I’m glad Muddy Paws allowed me to adopt and made the entire process quick and easy!

Amazing nonprofit dog rescue in NYC. They are so diligent, thorough, and caring. The whole organization — their staff and volunteers respond very quickly and I am very reassured that they do a thorough exam of their dogs before adopting them out. Adopting my dog from Muddy Paws Rescue was amazing and we are so happy to be part of this community. Highly recommend that you register to adopt with them!

Echoing the sentiment that the “matchmaking” process at Muddy Paws is apparently shrouded in secrecy for some people and dogs.In January 2024 I saw a dog on the Muddy Paws site that I was very interested in adopting. I completed the process to become a registered adopter. I indicated my interest in this particular dog while completing the adoption registration and followed up as soon as I was approved (I believe it was a Thursday or Friday) to arrange a meet and greet with the dog on the following Saturday (1/20/24). I was informed that this particular dog now had a waitlist (reflected on the website) and that if I was interested that I could come to the public part of the adoption event. On Saturday morning the dog’s status on the site once again said “available” as opposed to “waitlist full” so I was hopeful as I went to the adoption event. I arrived shortly after 1:15pm and felt like I was disturbing the volunteers that were deeply engrossed in a personal conversation when I went to inquire about the dog’s status. After I waited for them to finished their conversation, I was advised that the dog was currently in a meet and greet and that I could be scheduled to meet with her at 1:45pm if she had not been adopted, which I chose to do. After standing around on the sidewalk in the freezing cold for a half hour, I was informed that the people who met the dog immediately prior to my scheduled meeting had chosen to adopt her.I was aggravated with how the entire process played out, as I felt there was absolutely no transparency about what was going on. Throughout the approximately two weeks that I was in contact with Muddy Paws, this particular dog’s status on the website was continuously changing, yet somehow no adoption took place until immediately before I was going to meet her. I got the impression that for some reason or another, Muddy Paws did not want me to adopt this dog to the point where I was deliberately misled. I can’t think of any other reason why, as a registered adopter and despite expressing high interest in this particular dog, I was not contacted when all of the allegedly scheduled meet and greets for the closed portion of the event apparently canceled on Saturday morning.I live alone in an apartment and this dog was a larger breed. I think this may have played into what I perceived as Muddy Paws giving me the run around, rather than just telling me why they didn’t think that this dog would be a good fit for me. She was ultimately adopted by a family of 4. Even if I disagreed (I do, my family has exclusively had GSDs throughout my life), I’d at least have some insight into their process and more importantly, wouldn’t have wasted my time jumping through all of their hoops and following up with inquiries. I was highly dissatisfied with the lack of transparency in their “matchmaking” and decided that when I ultimately did adopt that I would not do so through Muddy Paws.I was disappointed but when I left the adoption event that day and went straight to North Shore Animal League just to look around when I met my new best friend, a 3 month old German Shepherd-Husky mix. I completed the extremely rigorous and thorough, yet transparent, adoption process and brought my boy home that day. It’s been almost a year now and I’m ultimately happy that things didn’t work out with Muddy Paws because I love my sweet boy. Having seen how extensive North Shore’s adoption interview and approval process is, I wonder how many Muddy Paws rescues end up being rehomed after being adopted out to unfit adopters.

In 2021 (after a break from fostering) I started up again and Lyla was assigned to me as a foster but I quickly realized she was home ❤️The team was great with the transition from foster to owner and I’m so grateful! I dont have enough words to describe how much I love this adoption agency. I adopted my boy from them back in January of 2023. The process is SO simple.. register online, and once youre registered, you can start adopting! Youre registered for a whole year so you have plenty of time to find the perfect match for your family. The descriptions and routines of each individual dog are listed on the website and SO thorough and descriptive, youll absolutely find a good match! Once you do, all you have to do is reach out about the dog your interested in and schedule which date you want to see them. You can literally walk away with your fur baby the same day! All the volunteers are SO sweet and the foster parents are absolutely lovely. I live over 3 hours away from NYC, but I wont adopt another dog from any other rescue but Muddy Paws!! 10/10 highly recommend!!

I love Muddy Paws! We adopted our Jean Luc our beagle mix last July and couldn’t be happier. He has made our lives so much better and more exciting. The process of adopting him with muddy paws was seamless we got approved, saw his picture, made an appointment and met him. He of course was terrified of us but with time he has gotten so much better and is a big couch sleeping potato who we love. I love this organization and if I could adopt 20 dogs from them I would but I have settled for helping them and becoming a foster. The dogs at muddy paws are well taken care of and they are very transparent regarding any issues they might need to conquer. With patience and love they can become your best friend! Thank you Muddy Paws for the great work you do!

I cant express how delighted my family is with the experience we had adopting a dog through Muddy Paws Rescue. My brother and his gf were looking to adopt a dog, and after researching various rescue organizations, they decided to go with Muddy Paws Rescue. From start to finish everyone was very impressed by transparency and fairness during the process. What really stood out was the exceptional level of interaction we had with their volunteers and staff. Every step of the way, they were there to answer our questions, provide guidance, and share their insights about the dogs available for adoption. Its evident that they genuinely care about the well-being of the dogs and are committed to creating solid matches between the pups and their forever families. The dedication and passion of the Muddy Paws Rescue team are truly remarkable. Its evident that they invest so much love and effort into each dogs journey. The adoption process is simple to understand, and because all the dogs in their care are in foster homes they are able to provide helpful information about the dogs personality and schedule. We never felt rushed or pressured, which made us confident in our decision. Our experience with Muddy Paws was so impressive that I decided to join their community as a foster and volunteer. The organizations values align with what I believe in - supporting dogs in need and finding them loving homes. The support from both the organization and the volunteer community is heartwarming, and the expectations for foster parents are clear. If youre considering adopting a dog or even becoming a part of this incredible mission, I cant recommend Muddy Paws Rescue enough. Their transparency, compassion, and commitment to their cause shine through in everything they do. Thank you, Muddy Paws, for helping us find our Maple!!

We partnered with Muddy Paws Rescue to host a small adoption event. The volunteers were very pleasant and really passionate about the animals. The dogs were very well trained and just lovely to be around. One of our own fell in love with one of the dogs at the event and went through with the adoption process on the spot. We are very happy to know that she was cared for the wonderful people of Muddy Paws and that she now has a lovely forever home. We will certainly be looking forward to hosting future events with them and supporting their cause.

After jumping through all the hoops that understandably are needed to adopt a dog, this organization did not fully inform me of the way the adoption process works. I was at their event by 10:20am—it started at 11am. I had been emailing back and forth about wanting to adopt a specific dog. When I arrived, I was told that she had no other people waiting to adopt her-I was the only one. My paperwork was reviewed and approved by 11:30am and I was told I would see her at 12pm. I asked a staff member “ is it likely that I will be able to adopt her? They said yes. I also asked if I could buy her a bandana. They said yes—or I could buy one from them as a donation…” all this to then bring the puppy out—have a ton of people touch and kiss her (which is not a great idea, given Covid and that she’s only two months)—to then give her to some other person at around 12:05pm. I was told I would be called at 12 to see her. This process was disheartening, and just plain mean. I don’t want to hear how you stand by your matchmaking blah blah…it was wrong.**Response to Muddy PawsThe miscommunication between your staff is clearly evident. They should have verified where I stood in the process before saying yes to me! Had I known the process more clearly, I would have been more prepared for the outcome. I had been in communication by email and was invited to see the puppy. I traveled from Queens to meet her only to be disappointed.

We went to their adoption event back in September and met with a puppy that we loved. We went to their event on a whim and and were told that since we already met with the pup, we would get first priority and could set up a meeting at HQ during the week. We were so excited. We emailed that same day, days go by, no response… Finally when we did get a response, we were told that we were now second in line and that we can come to next weeks event to see what the first person in line decides. We went to the event and were crushed as we saw the first person in line take him home. If we would have known, we would have taken the dog the same day we met with him. It was very unprofessional for us to be lied to and made believe that we had high chances. Another volunteer that I explained this to simply said the person helping us did not know the rules and should have never told us we would get priority. Although I ended up adopting another pup later on and will still recommend/will adopt from muddy paws again, this experience still makes me sad. I write this review in hopes for change because muddy paws is truly saving dogs. Please provide better customer service because communication through email takes too long and there were times where I would get inaccurate responses (ex. I was told they couldn’t find my registration when I was indeed registered) and then it will take days again to get a response. And of course, I ask to please train volunteers the proper rules so that my situation will not happen to others.

Ive volunteered for, fostered with, and rescued from a number of animal rescues in different states over the years, and I can easily say that Muddy Paws is the most organized, well run, impactful rescue Ive ever encountered. The organization is run by an incredibly dedicated and caring team, on both the staff and volunteer level. Every step of the rescue, fostering, and adoption process is thoughtfully and responsibly designed to ensure as many pups as possible are placed in safe, loving homes and that new adopters are set up for success. Muddy Paws is such an amazing organization that cares so deeply for saving the lives of dogs. I’ve had an amazing experience with Muddy Paws as a foster and volunteer and several of my friends have adopted their pups from MPR as well and have nothing but wonderful things to say about their experience. With many rescues, there’s a huge barrier to entry making it impossible to adopt, but Muddy Paws eliminates that barrier so we can save as many dogs as possible. Highly recommend rescuing your next furry friend with Muddy Paws!

I adopted my dog from Muddy Paws Rescue in 2021 after hearing about them from a family member who had adopted from them in 2017.The process to become a registered adopter was straightforward, taking about 2 weeks from the time I filled out the registration form, to being ready to adopt, but also incredibly thorough including a call with a volunteer to learn more about my preferences in a dog. Once registered, I kept a close eye on the website daily until I saw a dog I was interested in. After emailing the adoptions team, I received a response within a few hours and moved forward with scheduling a meeting.Since it was during the height of the pandemic, meetings were being held virtually over zoom. Despite not meeting her in person prior to making a decision, I felt as confident as I could in my decision to adopt because the information from Muddy Paws was so thorough. I knew about her routine while in her foster home, and even had the chance to ask her foster questions about her schedule and behavior. While picking her up 2 days later, the staff and volunteers at the event made sure things were running smoothly, from giving her vaccines, to explaining the walking device that she had been using in foster care. It was clear that everyone I encountered cares deeply about the best interest of each and every pup that passes through their care and are genuinely invested in their placement and success.Following her adoption, I heard from MPR several times, checking in to see how she was settling in, and I made sure to take advantage of the many resources they provide to adopters, including trainer recommendations. I couldnt imagine my life without my pup and Im so appreciative to MPR for everything they did to bring her into my life.

I have been fostering and volunteering with Muddy Paws for over 6 years and have had a great experience. Muddy Paws is extremely organized and has set processes in place which helps the adoption and fostering process to run smoothly and efficiently.Muddy Paws also practices open adoptions and truly strives to give every adopter and foster the opportunity to adopt or foster as long as they have good intentions and are willing to learn. The dogs come from the NYCACC or other open intake shelters such as Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society in Kentucky where the needs are high, but care is taken when deciding what dogs will be happy in an urban environment like NYC. Obviously behavior in a shelter environment is not always a clear indicator of how dogs will behave in a home environment, but every effort is made to communicate all known information about the dog to potential adopters. Muddy Paws wants to equip potential adopters with all of the information available so that an informed decision can be made by adopters.I have felt supported during my fostering process as fosters are matched with a volunteer foster buddy who can answer any questions. All supplies are also provided, dogs are marketed on the website and on social media and there are weekly opportunities to get dogs adopted through adoption events. My own dog was a foster fail from Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society via Muddy Paws and she is the light of my life!

If youre looking to adopt a specific dog you see on the website, prepare to be disappointed. I tried emailing them about a particular dog for a couple days but got slow, unhelpful replies. I then went to an adoption event (an hour before it started), only to be told someone else was already scheduled to meet the dog, so I would have to stand by, which I did for two hours. The dog remained available at my meeting time, but they pushed me back again after inexplicably inserting someone else ahead of me, who ended up adopting the dog. Very crappy experience overallEdit: Just a reply to the owners response since it is riddled with inaccuracies and omissions. After being notified that my registration had expired, I immediately renewed it and emailed two people in your organization to confirm, but I was ignored and got no reply.  Since you reviewed the correspondence, you must be aware of that. On Saturday when I got to the event at 10am (first one there, btw), I was told there was ONE previously-scheduled meeting at 11:30am and that I would have to wait.  I then got bounced around from one person to another and finally given a noon meeting time for the dog.  Fine.  However, when I returned to the check-in desk at noon, I was told that someone else was meeting the dog at that time, which the check-in guy revealed had only been scheduled that morning.  I tried to explain he had made an error, but he preferred to blow me off with his snotty, self-important attitude.  At the end of the day, it wasnt just that guy, the whole process was disorganized and unreliable

Our experience with Muddy Paws has been beyond terrible. Things started out great - we submitted our application, had our interview, and met our dog virtually. One challenge with the organization is the extreme time pressure placed on things - we were forced to say yes/no to adopting the dog within minutes of the interview, and were then told we had 24 hours to pick her up.We were unable to visit the dog in person due to covid protocols (even outside). We made them aware of our family, including two young children. We were given detailed personality of the dog, which proved very inaccurate. Within 3 hours of being in our home, the dog had drawn blood with bites and our two children would not leave their rooms for fear of the dog. Within 3 hours of adopting her we contacted both the foster family and muddy paws to take her back, noting that we are not an appropriate or safe home for the pet. Muddy Paws has been very slow to respond / address our concerns - if we were a single couple Id understand, but ultimately this is not a safe situation for our children and they seem like they could care less about this. The prior foster family refused to take the dog back (I assume they realized there were issues they hid from us).Ive lived with dogs my whole life - ultimately we trusted that the dog we were matched with would be safe for children as Muddy paws and the foster family suggested, but this has not been the case. Now we are stuck with a dog that we cannot care for, with no ability to return her and no recourse to find another home for her. I would highly suggest never adopting or fostering a dog from Muddy Paws especially if you have young children. We are posting this to warn other families and also in the hope that Muddy Paws will contact us so we can resolve this issue.

If you are hoping to adopt a healthy dog from this place, I would recommend reconsidering.I adopted my sweet boy from Muddy Paws in October this year and my dog was given a clean bill of health and the records to prove it. However, within three months and over $4K in vet expenses later, I have certainly learned that is not the case.My dog had a few signs of health issues that were communicated to the team when I was fostering him, including a cough he got medication for and a lack of appetite that is unusual for his breed. I was told “Blood work was deemed unnecessary at the time, since it was likely his appetite was from having CIRDC”. I am sorry, but “likely” isn’t good enough. How can you give me a clean bill of health without administrating blood work to confirm? I have visited three vets and each were shocked to learn he never got standard blood work while with the rescue program.Only after I signed the adoption papers did my dog undergo proper medical testing which included 3 urinalyses, blood work, x-rays and ultrasounds. I have now learned that my dog has a chronic medical condition that will not only require lifelong medication, but also surgery potentially as well. When I reached out to Muddy Paws about the astronomical vet expenses I’ve incurred just from testing alone, I was told they want to “help in any way they can”, but can’t do anything about the vet expenses since I already signed the papers. I love my dog and wouldn’t trade him for the world, but I would have never signed the adoption papers had I known of his medical issues prior. While I admit that the Muddy Paws staff is very friendly and responsive — be wary of this organization and be sure they pay for a vet checkup by YOUR personal vet before signing any papers.
