We sent our 2 pups for 3 weeks of board and train, One younger and one older pup. They thrived! They absolutely loved being there and looked so happy. They came home good boys and eager to please. We will continue working diligently with them but we are over the moon with their training and behavior! Dave was very responsive to all our concerns and questions. The trainers were both very sweet as well and our pups loved them all. While they have only been home a few days we know this was the best investment in our family! Highly recommend bringing your dogs here.

The Art of Dog is the only facility I would ever recommend to anyone looking to board and train their dog. I have a German Shepherd who is the love of my life but he desperately needed training, the anxiety I had sending him away for 4 weeks was absolutely crippling. The staff at The Art of Dog are so professional, kind, loving, caring, and gentle. The owner Dave was FANTASTIC, my dog had such severe separation anxiety he wasnt eating and was vomiting. They called me right away and went back throughout the middle of the night to make sure he was okay. They gave him special fresh pet food to go with his kibble and he was better in no time. They posted tons of progress videos and photos that kept me going until I picked him up. Thank you again for being truly AMAZING!! VEGAS LOVES YOU ALL!

Words cannot truly describe how happy we are with The Art of DOG. We trusted Dave and his team with our rescued Vizsla, Henrik. After previous failed training attempts with other trainers for resource guarding, we were at a loss. Feeling like a failure to our dog and not knowing what the future held for our pup and our family, we needed major help. After one conversation with Dave, I knew there was hope. Henrik did a 3 week board and train, and he thrived. We received updates and pictures (which totally helped this dogmom get through the 3 weeks). Dave and his trainers are some of the best in the area. WE have the dog we knew Henrik could be. We are the dog owners that we NEED to be, after training with Henrik and Mariah as well. Six months strong and we still have the foundation of his training in place. We are enjoying the lake, our backyard and hiking trails without concern. Henrik loves his sister Luka, and they are the companions we hoped they would be. Henrik follows his commands as second nature. We finally did it! Thank you Dave and crew for setting us up for success and your continued support.Five Stars are just NOT ENOUGH!

We sent our dog to a three week board and train. Atlas has been back for a month and he is doing so well. He was very reactive to people and he pulled on the leash all the time. His behavior improved so much, we are able to enjoy walks with him and take him around new people. Everyone at the art of dog treated Atlas so well and every time I saw him on Instagram he seemed so happy! Thank you for everything!

I cannot recommend their services enough. I was struggling with a 1 year old Great Dane severely lacking confidence and structure. The dog that I received back after training is night and day from what I started out with. Aside from the change in him, I notice a change in myself. I am a much more informed dog owner and truly thank them for helping me out. They will be a part of my future with every dog moving forward. You won’t regret it!

We are forever grateful for dave and his team and the art of dog! Our boy cooper is extremely anxious and reactive around people he is not familiar with and we were at a loss of what to do. We enrolled him in the 4 week board and train program. They were great with communication when we checked in! Once he completed the program, they had a session with us to bring us up to speed. We now have the tools we need in order to alleviate his anxiety and stress on walks and when meeting new people. We cannot thank them enough!

Just picked my dog up and all I can say is WOW. We sent our German shepherd for reactivity issues, and just some training refresh. I became obsessed with watching updates on instagram, she looked so happy! Marisa did her final training with me (really to train me) and I was in shock/ happy tears while we walked past other dogs and she remained calm. In the past I’d have to take different ways if dogs were around, or just stay home far too often. They provided her with the confidence to not lunge or bark. We did our first pack walk yesterday with 2 other dogs and I’ve never felt so happy! She enjoyed herself for the first time without anxiety of other animals. I couldn’t be happier with her progress and the work they did with her. Highly recommended!

Highly recommend! this training has been life-changing for my pups & me! before this, I was honestly convinced they could not be tamed- but within weeks of consistent practice they have learned to be well-mannered & actually listen to me! plus they seem happier & more confident! Marisa is a wonderful trainer! she goes above & beyond to make sure we get as much as we can out of the training. she is compassionate, kind, & patient; helping to add structure while still accepting silly little quirks of my pups that I enjoy. I highly recommend Art of Dog to anyone looking for more structure & guidance for their pups :)

Our 6 month old Golden retriever pulled me and my girlfriend everywhere! Chased Every leaf like his life depended on it! Never listened and easily distracted. We were so frustrated and worried about him getting injured because of this. We tried so many forms of training with positive reinforcement but they all ended up failing. So we put our trust with David for two weeks and when he came back he was amazing! No more chasing, perfect walk, we can even walk perfectly in pace with no leash! He’s a sharp listener and extremely obedient. He still loves to do all things he did before like swimming and an insane love for fetch but now we can do all those things and then some! He is 1 years old now and 5 months after his training, he’s perfect. David built the foundation for our dream dog! When we get a new puppy we will definitely go through David again.

Dave is Buffalo’s dog whisperer. Our 6 month old puppy started developing very aggressive traits and we had no idea where to turn. After only the first few lessons with Dave his behavior took a complete 180 and he turned the great pup we knew he could be. Dave doesn’t train your dog, he trains you the owner and gives you the tools you need to help your dog grow throughout their life.

I knew about Dave through some friends and asked him if he could help me with my dog. He was very pleasant, easy-going, and confident. My dogs problems:1. Hates the cat2. Pulls relentlessly on walks3. Aggressive with other dogs4. Doesn’t listen to commandsDave gave me the knowledge of how to better communicate with my dog. He thoroughly explained what we were doing, and made sure I knew what I was doing. I recommend the board and train. It significantly sped up our training progress.Today, Lola is relaxed on walks. She now eagerly awaits commands. She plays well with others at the park, and enjoys naps with the cat.

Our sweet Stormie Gray really struggled with being dog & people reactive. We couldn’t walk her without her trying to lunge at the other dogs or continuously bark at people. We were embarrassed by her behavior and were losing hope. Thankfully we were told about The Art of Dog and instantly looked into them. From the moment Dave answered us, I knew everything was going to be okay. He paired us up with Mallory and we couldn’t of been more thankful for her. She was laid back, gentle and so informative. Mallory gave us the peace of mind we truly needed. She constantly reassured us (which I needed the most through this whole process). But as of today we finished our last class at The Art of Dog and Stormie has done a complete 180. She’s a brand new dog. We are no longer nervous to take her on walks or let her be outside. We are forever grateful for Dave and Mallory for everything they’ve done for us and Storm.

We had Caitlin and her and Luna were the perfect match...we loved Art of Dog so much we just got Luna back from 1 more week of board/train...I think Luna wanted to stay with Caitlin. The team at Art of the Dog made my deaf 5 year old pup a much more confident and well behaved dog. As Angel got older, her anxiety and therefore reactivity worsened. I was at a loss with her stubbornness and reactions and it was starting to put a strain on our relationship. We had used a trainer before, but it was unsuccessful for a myriad of reasons. This was the first time I considered a board and train, and as an anxious dog mom, I was very worried. Dave and his team considered all of my worries and goals from the very start. I felt comfortable with her being away because of their frequent posts/updates— I could see that Angel was loving it! Of course, one of the biggest aspects of training is training the owner, and I felt adequately prepared to keep up her training after her 3 weeks. Angel is a much happier dog, and I have the tools necessary to effectively communicate with her. I am so grateful to Art of the Dog, and wish I had reached out to them sooner! Thank you so much.

TL;DR: Dave and staff did a great job taking Charlie from a rascal (see below) puppy to a well behaved dog who we love and enjoy doing all the things with (e.g. farmers market, brewery patios, walking, etc.)Charlie is a Landseer Newfoundland, who Dave and staff trained for 3 weeks in May at the age of 6 months.Who Charlie was:Charlie was a counter surfing barker with a host of non-sense puppy behaviors. He would bark in your face when he wanted attention, when he was hungry, and when in general he was overwhelmed. If Charlie felt an emotion or instinct or was responding to a drive he barked. At 6 months, Charlie was already able to see onto counters, jump up, and eat even the stuff pushed waaaaayyyy back.Who Charlie is now:My wife and I honestly didnt know what to expect sending Charlie to a board-and-train. We always did the whole 1 year twice a week show up for puppy training classes. Would Charlie come back able to hop on one leg or do some other cool stuff? When people ask us what he learned or some variant of this. Our answer is pretty simple: Charlie learned how to be comfortable being uncomfortable and how to properly deal with his drives/instincts/feelings. Sure he knows how to sit, walk, lay down, etc., but thats not the secret in the Art of the Dogs sauce. The secret is Charlie being able to walk around Bidwell farmers market without reacting to every dog he sees, all the smells, and people he meets. In short, hes just a more comfortable and confident dog.The other question we get a lot is: is it worth it? After writing this review, Im contacting Dave to find out when he thinks Charlie will be ready for advanced training. Hands down, it is worth it.

I was hesitant at first to send my pup to the board and train program as I’ve never boarded him in the past. Dave does a really good job at putting you at ease. He is very approachable and is very open to communicating your dogs progress to you while you are away. The results are unbelievable, I couldn’t stop smiling at the difference I saw the day I picked my dog up. The obedience on the leash is unbelievable and the place command has done wonders to calm my dog when he gets overstimulated with company over. Highly recommend to anyone considering!

Dave worked with myself and my rescue Georgia. She was not confident around other dogs and exhibited poor social skills, especially when getting around other dogs who were excitable. My favorite part about working with Dave is he trains the dog owner, not the dog. This will give you tools to use long term after your lessons have ended. Dave approaches his lessons with common sense and humor, which makes the process not only successful, but enjoyable. Highly recommend Art of Dog!!

Sought Dave out after many longstanding and perhaps over generalized concerns about my (non-working) working line shepherd’s behavior. He helped with how to functionally use the tools and methods I already had available and knew, as well as help me to understand that patience and a realization of what kind of dog I have on my hands is key to a true foundation and relationship between my dog and me. Today, while a lifelong commitment, our training is better than ever, and I am confident taking him out places that before seemed inconceivable. Knowing that he is always available to answer questions on the fly is another thing that sets him apart from other people/training facilities I’ve worked with in the past. Dave is a true one-of-a-kind person and trainer, and I’d recommend him to anyone with a desire to better their relationship with their dog.

We hired Dave when we first adopted our pit bull, Luna, from the shelter and quickly realized we were in over our heads when it comes to training a bully breed. The private lessons werent exactly cheap, but we considered them well worth the time and money for setting us up for future success with our dog. It was also extremely helpful having Dave come to our home and interact with our dog in her environment, as opposed to a more formal obedience class where 1-on-1 attention is limited.Dave quickly showed us the ropes with commands, and gave us the proper equipment and training to take our dog on walks without her pulling on the leash (we had used a harness previously and it was a miserable experience). Our dog responded really well to him, and he trained us just as much if not more than he trained her in just a few short sessions.Wed easily recommend Dave to anyone that feels like they need help with their pet!

I was a bit reluctant to send him away since we have seen him every single day since he was 2 months old, but it was the best thing we could have done for him. I cannot say enough great things about Dave and his training. We have a rescue who we’ve had for three years - who is somewhere between five and six years old. When she came to us she was absolutely terrified of everything, including going outside with my husband. We lived in CT at the time and I remember, just before the pandemic, a trainer said be careful - she’s going to go from scared rescue to bossy family dog and it’s going to be a challenge. He was right! But it was the pandemic and virtual training just wasn’t cutting it for the issues we were having.Fast forward to May and we moved to the Southern Tier. There’s only one trainer in our area and positive only. Perhaps it works for others but it was not working for us and what we needed to work on with our pup. After a few issues and some worsening behavior we started looking into trainers and messaged many.We found Dave and Art of Dog and from the moment I reached out - I knew he was the right fit. He reached out and immediately addressed our concerns and let us know how he would work with her. We knew we were going on a trip at the end of the year and we scheduled her for a three week board and train. I was surprised he was absolutely ok with taking her over the holidays and it wasn’t a concern. While we were away he sent updates and photos and dealt with me being a sad dog mom who missed her pup from the other side of the world. When we got back he did a brief overview with us and made sure we got the basics and now it’s on us to continue to manage the behavior. She has the skills and knowledge and we have the tools. He’s an excellent resource and always available even if it’s coaching me through my feelings about things.Leia is stubborn and initially one of our concerns was that she would refuse to participate. The updates from Dave told me that she was being stubborn and nervous but he was persistent and built a bond with her. Soon enough he was helping her learn how to be less scared and enjoy her life more. She doesn’t need to be in the lead and protect us and now we have the tools to help communicate with her about what is expected and what behavior is acceptable. We are so thankful for Dave and how he’s improved Leia’s life and helped her “level up” as a pup. We know that with consistency and persistence she’ll continue to flourish and with Dave’s support (even after her board and train is over) I have no doubt we’ll get there. Thank you!!

My first experience was great. I gave it 5 stars. 10 months later a new issue popped up and I reached out again. The young lady that originally worked with my dog met with us and we chatted for about 30 minutes. We set a date to get together again. She was a no show. We rescheduled. The problem I have is she wasnt addressing the issue Im having with my dog. After a number of back and forth texts I have decided to go elsewhere. She became VERY condescending. I have trained THOUSANDS of dogs. She hasnt been on earth long enough to train thousands of dogs. This was the first time I used a dog trainer and Ive owned dogs all my life... Im 66. If youre having issues with your dog and are ok with pinch collars and e-collars, they are great. I had no luck with follow-up. A friend had David, the owner as a trainer and cant say enough good things about him. Great place if you dont need follow up.

Dave at the Art of Dog did wonders with our dog Mae during her two week board and train session. We were a bit apprehensive about boarding Mae for a whole two weeks as any dog owner might be, but Art of Dog came highly recommended so we reached out for some more information. When Dave connected with us after we submitted our application our worries were quickly eased with how thorough he walked us through the program and its training aspects. During Maes time with Art of Dog we were given update texts and some reading material to help train us for what our dog needed to have a good foundation at home. Finally, when Dave came and reintroduced Mae to home he spent a good hour walking us through different commands, walking techniques, and basic structure to make sure we were able to carry on the foundation he had established. My friend instantly replied with Daves number and said he was The Best! So I reached out immediately.I quickly explained the issue I was having with Max and he was very flexible in getting to me right away to start working on the issue. Dave made it convenient by coming to our home to assess the situation. He carefully observed my dogs and then thoughtfully explained what he saw was going on, and what needed to be done to correct it.He introduced me to some training tools that I was not familiar with and made sure that I could use them comfortably and confidently. As it turns out, Max wasnt even the issue! It was Bailey. Max was just reacting to Bailey. I would have never known that had I not gotten Daves help. Now I am happy to say that my dogs (and I) have better structure, are well on their way to being the well mannered dogs I know they can be, and that I have the knowledge and tools to help them get there (and stay there). After 3 short lessons the difference is already night and day. One of the best things about the whole process was that the training happened right in my home which made things easy and convenient too.I highly recommend Dave for all your dog/human training needs!! Our experience with The Art of Dog training has been absolutely outstanding. Through their personal training sessions, Mallory helped us train not one but two puppies (5 and 6 month old rescued puppies). It has been incredible to see the progression from each session. These are not the same two dogs from our first session. They have grown tremendously as they are much more attentive and obedient. After each session Mallory would walk us through what to continue doing with the dogs until the next session. We made sure to put in the work so the dogs stayed on track and were ready for the next lesson. This was very important and we are glad Mallory emphasized the need for keeping up with this. Mallory helped us with their reactivity to other dogs and people on walks, she helped us with how they walk (no longer pulling us), and she helped us get a handle on their household manners (not constantly barking at outside noises and going to Place and staying there when told). I am so thankful that we worked with Mallory and The Art of Dog and we plan on adding on sessions and using them for our boarding needs. I cannot recommend them enough!

Dave is amazing. I brought my 3.5 year old German Shepherd to him last summer. He had issues listening when he was barking, jumping all over people and other dogs, and I couldn’t even walk him without my boyfriend to actually hold the leash because he would pull and drag me the whole way. 2 weeks with Dave made him a brand new dog! I can now walk him on my own, he knows the “place” command to stay on when people come over or when we’re eating, my boyfriend and I say at least once a week still almost a year later that it was the best money we’ve ever spent. And what’s great too is it’s not just the training and you’re done with Dave, we’ve had situations pop up or questions months after the training and he’s always so willing to give us a quick call to talk out what’s going on and give his expert advice. I highly recommend!!!

I can’t say enough great things about Dave. He took in my Doberman mix puppy for the 2 week board & train program when she was 7 months old and completely transformed the way she responds to me, the way she walks on a leash, and her overall attitude towards other people and other dogs. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a dog trainer in the Buffalo area!!

I was a little over my head deciding to adopt a rescue pup as a first time dog owner. Harper had already learned a lot of bad habits, had never been given rules before, and was insecure around both strangers and other dogs. After a few one on one sessions, I decided to send Harper to The Art of Dog’s 2 week board and train program. Not only was Dave able to teach Harper commands I could never do on my own, he instilled confidence in her that has much improved her manners. If you’re feeling overwhelmed as I was or just want your pup to listen a little bit better, I would recommend The Art of Dog to anyone.

Our 10 month old goldendoodle, Dodger, did a 2 week board and train with Dave. We went into a bit of crisis management when we decided to bring my recently disabled Mom to live with us. Our biggest concern was Dodgers incessant jumping, and the possibility of him knocking my mom out of her wheelchair. At almost 60lbs, he doesn’t realize his own strength or size, which is a recipe for disaster. He also completely tore up our loveseat (no, he literally tore it up. And then pulled it halfway across the living room) in a matter of just a few minutes. We have had him back for a full week now, and even though he’s still a work in progress, he is like a completely new dog! He has mastered the “place” command and stays for extended periods of time, even if we walk out of the room. We’re still working on his jumping (now it’s only when someone walks into the house) and we are working on helping him refocus his energy into something else besides destruction. While Dodger was staying with Dave, I was able to call and/or text Dave whenever I wanted a quick update about my pup, and Dave never made me feel like an imposition for checking in. The day we picked Dodger up, Dave gave us an extensive lesson about all of the new commands and how to properly handle our doodle.I am well aware that the key to long term success with Dodger is going to be consistency. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that by utilizing the tools Dave has given us, we are going to have a much happier pup and we will have significantly lower stress levels.Sending Dodger to Dave was 100% worth every single penny we paid. I’m totally kicking myself for waiting as long as we did. Take a chance and send your pup over to the Art of Dog. Your dog is definitely worth the investment!

If you’re looking for a knowledgeable and gentle trainer, look no further. After having a bad experience with a previous trainer, we decided to move on and try a new one. A+++ experience. We would definitely seek his services again.

Seriously amazing training. I adopted a 3 year old Pitbull for my very first dog, and needless to say I was in over my head. He was lunging, barking, pulling, and all around misbehaving anytime we went outside. I found Art of Dog and signed my dog up for a two week board and train with Mallory.I can not say enough good things about Mallory and the training she provided to me and my dog. Mallory kept me up to date with all of my dogs progress throughout the two weeks, and patiently taught me everything in our go-home lesson. Now, when I go outside with my dog, I dont have stress and anxiety about seeing other people or dogs. He walks in a fantastic heel and happily corrects himself when he gets distracted.I could not be happier with my experience. It has given my dog and I a whole new relationship. If you are thinking about booking with Art of Dog, do it!

We bought the 8 session package for our stubborn and skittish Catahoula/Whippet rescue pup a few years ago. Within 2 sessions with Art of Dog she was already listening and learning a ton. These sessions not only trained her, but us as well. She learned to trust us and we learned how to speak and interact with her so she knew that we are in charge but also loyal to her. She is now 4 years old and every person that comes to our house or meets us on walks mentions how well behaved she is. The investment was worth every penny. We recommend Art of Dog 100%!

My boyfriend and I hired Dave to help us with our two dogs, Cooper and Casey. Casey is a wild child with a large heart and Cooper has a scary history of biting and killing small animals. We specifically hired Dave to focus on Coopers anger towards small animals as the dogs had just gained two cat brothers. My biggest fear was that we would never be able to have all four animals in one room together. After only THREE (intense) lessons we are living as one big happy family with no incidents. Cooper and Casey are truly different dogs. We can not only enjoy living together stress free, but we can go for walks, have people in our house without fear on injury, long leash in the park, or even off leash play! Never in a million years did we think any of those things were possible. Dave went above and beyond with training US on how to train them. He is down to earth, funny, and clearly knows what he is talking about. I can not recommend him enough.

We recently rescued a seven year old German Shepard, Henry. We soon found out he had a habit of nipping/biting strangers. His demeanor was calm, but extremely undisciplined. After the first hour session with Dave, and a couple days of follow up, it was like we had a different dog. Ive had dogs all of my life, but never a large breed with the potential to hurt someone. Dave gave us the tools we need to understand and correct all of Henrys bad behaviors. We can now have guests and not have to worry about him biting or misbehaving.

They haven’t gotten into any fights in a very long time and we now feel more comfortable with having guest come over to our house. I was referred to Dave from another one of his customers. We adopted a 1 yr old amstaff terrier mix and we were in over our heads with the lack of self control Beuford had. Separation anxiety, poor walking skills, easily distracted, failing to listen, leash aggressive, and the worst of them...dog aggressive. Best way to describe our boy when he saw another dog was a full blown meltdown- pulling, barking, foaming at the mouth. His “pitty talk” alone would have scared me off if I wasn’t his owner. Dave recommended private sessions, and within the first 30 minutes of the first lesson he had this wild pup staying in “place” for 20 seconds at a time (that might not sound much but holy smokes it was bazaar to see him stay in one place for that long). Dave was incredibly patient with Beuford and his quirks, and also taught my husband and I how to be more disciplined with training and learning the different signals Beu would give us when he was anxious. Slowly but surely, Beu went from hating his crate to finding it a safe haven; from wiggling every second to finding “place” a moment of “zen” and self control; from lunging and screaming at other dogs to just tugging and whining a little (progress is progress man); from sniffing, scratching, stopping, and pulling on his walks to walking right next to us. He’s a happier pup when he’s “working” (aka training). It keeps his brain thinking, and tires him out. I recommend Dave to ALLLLLLL dog owners for ANY kind of training. Thank you Dave! Beuford misses those long walks down Elmwood with Roland!

Axle was afraid of everyone and everything which came off as aggressive(even though he’s such a baby). He’s now able to comfortably go on walks, go out in public around other dogs and people without reacting, and even stays in place while there’s a million distractions going on outside that used to trigger him. After seeing such great success, we started private lessons with our other dog whose very hyper. She’s a leash puller, and gets crazy excited when she sees other dogs! now she walks side by side with me and does nothing more then look and maybe whine a bit when walking past other dogs barking. My wife and I have a rescue mix who we have had for about three and a half years. She’s a great dog, but has a high prey drive, and when she’s in hunting mode, it’s like nothing else in the world exists. We were concerned about our ability to communicate with her when she’s like this, and the fact that at 70lbs, she could pull my wife over on a walk if she wanted to. She’s also a bit of a bully to our cat.We knew we’d be traveling around the holidays, so we began searching for a board and train program for her. My wife reached out to Dave, and he was very quick to respond. We discussed her issues, and he was pretty sure he could help her, even when we said that she can be very sassy and a bit stubborn. His rates were very reasonable, too.We dropped her off with him and began our trip. He was very open to texts from up with updates and letting us know how she was doing. He sent us pictures as well. When we arrived back in Buffalo to pick her up, he told us that he got to see the stubborn side, but she worked through it and knew what was now expected of her.About six months later, I believe I speak for my wife and I when I say that taking her to Dave was the best decision we could have made and was absolutely worth it. She now knows listening to us, even when she’s focused on something else, isn’t optional. She knows “place”, and her recall is much better than it used to be. She doesn’t pull my wife on the leash anymore, and my wife has said that this is one of the smallest things, but the biggest change in her routine. It makes her walks so much more pleasant. The biggest change for us, though, is being able to have people come visit us without constant barking. Our dog would bark at my mother incessantly anytime she was in the house and we could not figure out how to help her understand that she didn’t need to do that. After spending some time with Dave, we were able to have my other come over, and she was able to pet our dog for the first time. Being able to tell her to go to place really helps her “work through her stuff” and calm down to a moment where she is able to interact with the world around her again. It’s been an absolute game changer.Overall, I cannot say enough great things about Buffalo K9 and Dave. We have friends who we’ve referred who have worked with some of the other trainers he has on staff and they’ve been extremely impressed too. Although Buffalo isn’t exactly near by for us, it’s well worth it, and one of the only places we trust to take our girl. Definitely check Dave out!
