Very pleasant experience with all the volunteers and dogs at Ruff House. We live over an hour away but applied because of their positive reputation. After getting our application approved and virtual home visit completed, we went out to the rescue and had the opportunity to meet four beautiful dogs. After playing in the pen we were able to take a walk with one of the pups and a staff member, who gave us lots of good advice while gently encouraging us to adopt the dog we were clearly smitten with. The beautiful lady in the picture stole our heart and we had to take her home. Thanks to the Ruff House volunteers for all you do.

Ruff House Rescue has so many amazing dogs! We found the greatest addition to our family at Ruff House. Our dog is just wonderful and the Ruff House rescue staff was so helpful. They answered all of our questions and we didn’t feel pressured to adopt a dog. We adopted the perfect dog for us and were able to contact the volunteers with questions even after we adopted her. Thank you Ruff House rescue for introducing us to a wonderful family pet!

They are a wonderful group of people that travel to Texas to save these animals from the kill shelters. The animals they save, come back to Long Island where they get a second chance at a loving home. There care for these animals as if they are there own pets and want to make sure that they are care for. I have adopted several family members from their care and can’t speak enough about the good they do. 10 Stars!

This place is absolutely great! The Volunteers are so sweet and caring, super helpful and knowledgeable of the animals. They welcomed us with open arms and gave us free range with the dog we came to see. Communication was perfect after leaving to continue the adoption process. It took one week to get our new pet which we are so happy we got. I would highly recommend this rescue place to anyone that is looking to adopt a pet dog. When we got our dog we got all the paperwork and up to date information on the pup. Melts my heart what these volunteers do for these animals that are searching for a forever home.

There aren’t enough nice things I can say about this shelter for you to understand how great they are. We started as a foster because we were hesitant with our 3 senior cats. We were in contact the entire time of our fostering, updating with pictures daily. We grew attached to our little boy so we couldn’t give him back, and now have the greatest little pup thanks to this rescue. On the behalf of Beasley and our family, thank you for all you do

Everyone at Ruff House is kind, professional, and passionate about saving pups. From apps to adoption to tailored medical advice, they work tirelessly to make sure you’re supported during the process and making the best decision. I’m amazed that they’re able to do so much with such a lean team. We adopted Ruby, and you can tell that despite her past, she’s more confident and loves humans because of her short time at Ruff House. Huge shout out to Crystelle and Susan for literally making all of our dreams come true! We’re obsessed.

I adopted my first dog from Ruff House Rescue and she is just the perfect fit for me! The adoption process was extremely thorough, ensuring that the rescues go to a safe and caring home. My adoption agent made sure to ask good questions about what kind of dog I was looking for, and matched me with the perfect puppy. The adoption day itself was pretty hectic and disorganized, but maybe this is to be expected as the rescue is entirely volunteer run. I recently adopted my sweet baby girl and could not be happier! I did have to wait to hear from a volunteer. When I spoke to her she could not be nicer. She told me they have so many applications to adopt and everyone is a volunteer. She explained the adoption process to me. She told me she contacted my vet and he said I was a good pet owner. So people who are denied, there is a reason. They just don’t deny people to deny them. Ruff House wants these dogs in good homes more then anyone! My volunteer said they want them in good homes and know they will be cared for. I would highly recommend Ruff House! We started the process to adopt our pet just after Christmas! At the time due to Covid and demand I was made aware that my application may take longer than usual but that someone would contact me. About 4/5 weeks later I was contacted by a ruff house volunteer and we had our phone interview and home visit completed within 2 weeks! We were invited to attend our 1st adoption event and looked at some of the puppies and dogs on the website, we were very excited. When we got to the event all the puppies we were going to see had been adopted so we realized the demand was very high! I reached out to our volunteer representative who helped us look for a puppy in a foster home! We met our lovely puppy Casey the following day and feel madly in love! We know not to procrastinate about our decision we knew that we would know our puppy when we met her! Every volunteer we met with Ruff House Rescue was helpful, supportive! My experience with Ruff House Rescue was top notch. The Ruff House rescue team did a wonderful job interviewing me and finding out which type of dog suits my 12 year son and myself. After the home visit approval, we went to the shelter and met 3 fabulous dogs. It was difficult choosing just one. We ended up adopting a beautiful 3 year old female dog that was very skittish and timid a few months. Since that time, she has come out of her shell and is the most loving and playful dog. We have been looking for a dog for a few months now and applied to Ruff House in July. We were responded to in early September that our application was approved and we were ready for a house visit. Within two weeks we had the home visit and were then able to make an appointment to look at the dogs. While looking at the dogs, every volunteer was very friendly and helpful and were happy for both us and the dog being adopted. The volunteers knew our puppy by name without having to ask, and it was nice to see they truly cared for each and every dog available to adopt. It did take almost two months to get our application approved, but that is understandable due to the coronavirus and also that everybody there is a volunteer. Additionally, we thought the information session at the end of the adoption could have been done a bit differently and maybe shortened since it was a long day for us and the dogs. Overall though, we are very happy to have had a pleasant experience with friendly volunteers and most of all, a new puppy!

Lovely experience, lovely people, and a lovely new dog! What many of these negative reviews are failing to acknowledge is that Ruff House utilizes volunteers! They are people who are taking the time out of their own lives to do something amazing. Sure, it may take a bit of time to hear back- these are volunteers doing their best during a pandemic! Our whole process took exactly three weeks, which really is brief for such an important process. We are so pleased with our experience, and our new (BEYOND sweet) companion!Loved the information session at the end of adopting. Yes, it was a long day- but definitely important info! They are THOROUGH with their process, for good reason - if your application takes a bit of time or they point out something you need to fix during the home visit, it is because they care. Anything they see wrong has a reason behind it. They GENUINELY want their dogs going to the best and safest environment possible. Was sent to them on a recommendation from a friend, and I recommend them to anyone looking. Spread the word- Ruff House is a treasure!

I had the best experience with Ruff House Rescue! You could tell everybody at the rescue cares about each and every dog. The dog that I adopted I fell in love with the moment I saw him. He gives us hugs and you could tell how appreciative the dog is to be rescued. It’s like no other experience like the one I had here. It was a simple, quick and easy process. They explained everything in detail about safety and health about my dog. I bought their leash and collar that I love for my pup. He has learned how to sit already and to give paw. My mom always told me before she passed to look for heart shape rocks and that would be a sign from her. The funny thing about my pup I adopted, he has a heart shaped nose, so I know he was sent from my mom. He completes our lives and my kids couldn’t be happier. When I got to the meet and greet event, the RuffHouse staff was so friendly and knew so much about the dogs they had with them. You could really see how much the volunteers and the staff love the animals they work with. Everything was so organized and the entire fostering process was so quick and efficient. I brought my foster home with me that day, and RuffHouse has been very supportive and responsive to any question or concern I had. One of the volunteers would respond to my many texts or calls any time of day. Inevitably, I fell in love with the pup and wanted to adopt the dog. Ruff House volunteers are wonderful. The person who was assigned to my husband & I during this, at times, frustrating process went way out of her way to ensure that we found the right dog for us. We will never forget you. We came to RuffHouse for another dog. He was adopted before we were processed (vet, home visit etc takes time so make sure you get on that right away) our volunteer kept us in mind and contacted us about Dolan saying she thought he would fit our preferences. He did and more. He’s beautiful, gentle, playful, a bit rambunctious and already (one week in) a beloved member of our family. It’s expensive but well worth it if it turns out as well as it has for us. Good luck everyone looking and God bless everyone rescuing and placing these dogs. I lost my beloved JRT in March, 2020. The love I had for my Madison was an incredible 14 1/2 years worth. Her loss completely devastated me. I couldn’t even think about getting another dog. My dear friend told me that when I was ready that I should rescue/adopt and she had the right place for me to start looking. She suggested. Ruff House and I slowly started looking at all the dogs that needed homes. It took me about a week before I actually did an online application. I looked every day and saw all these adorable dogs and I started feeling that pull to want to rescue immediately. Miraculously within a few days, Karissa contacted me and we had a wonderful conversation about the entire rescue process. She took the time to hear my story about the loss of my dog and I conveyed to her that in my heart I had so much love in me to give to another dog. She contacted the vet I worked for and got back to me quickly and told me I received a glowing recommendation based on how I took care of my dog all her years and who suffered with diabetes her last year of life. I was given an appointment to come down to one of their adoption sites. It was run very smoothly and I laid my eyes on this precious 3 yr old chihuahua named Simona whom I have renamed Sydney. My friend told me that I would know the right dog when I looked in to their eyes and see their soul. As soon as they put her in my arms I saw just that. Her beautiful eyes spoke to me. At that moment I knew she was mine. Ruff House made the adoption process easy and effortless. This precious pup brought my smile back and the joy I have been experiencing with her every day is priceless. I can’t thank Ruff House enough for what they do for their animals but most importantly for what they bring to us, the people who adopt. This is an amazing organization and I will recommend them highly for all the good work they do. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Ruff House Rescue is a great organization and wed wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking to adopt a pup.

Were very lucky to have stumbled upon Ruff House Rescues when looking to add a new family member. They have a very thorough application process that allows them to find the best fit for all involved. The dog that originally drew us to Ruff House wasnt going to work out based on our current lifestyle. When asked which dogs they would recommend Melissa didnt even hesitate when suggesting we meet Shadow. It was definitely love at first sight. We could not be more lucky to be Shadows new parents if we tried. She has been the perfect addition to our family. Thank you Melissa, Diane and all the volunteers for all that you do.

Four years ago, we adopted the most beautiful puppy ever from Ruff House. I cant thank Diane and Melissa enough for believing in us through the adoption process. Although they didnt make it easy, I appreciate the steps that they took to ensure that she would be the right fit for us and that we would care and love her unconditionally. Her name is Princess Sophia and she truly lives up to her name. We are so grateful for the wonderful work Ruff House rescue does. Dont Shop Adopt. Thank you for your kind and gentle souls. We had a nice experience with Ruff House despite the complications of Covid. They do a good job of ensuring that the dogs being adopted will find a good home, which we appreciated. Its an adoption shelter, so go with an open mind and open heart rather than targeting a specific dog on their website, which cant really be up to date all the time given how many dogs they rescue. As with any organization with lots of volunteers, its not always perfect, but their heart is in the right place, and everyone we dealt with was kind and well meaning.

After following up a few times, we were able to go to an adoption event. Ruff House processed our application within a week and a half (which was much quicker than any other rescue org in NYC), and all of the volunteers we spoke to throughout the process were super nice and knowledgable - also clearly dog people. We met Dallas at an adoption event which was shockingly well-planned for covid-times. Since Dallas is heartworm positive, Ruff House is covering the treatment, which is thoughtful and responsible of them. Like any mostly-volunteer run organization, there can be some disorganization, but Ruff House is definitely on the good side of the spectrum.

I adopted my precious beauty Shadow (Geisha) 4 years ago from Ruff House Rescue. I initially “fostered”....and 9 days into foster I panicked and adopted her before someone came and snatched her from my life. I am a proud “Foster Fail”... The Foster/Adoption process was extensive but very smooth. I dealt with Diane and Melissa. When I went to meet potential fosters/adoptees they took the time to have me walk a few dogs to see what would be a good fit for me. What impressed me the most about Ruff House Rescue was that over a year after I adopted I happened to be at an adoption event where many Rescues attended. I was walking around with my girl (who had gained a considerable amount of weight) and not sure if it was Diane or Melissa but I hear someone say (“Is that My Geisha?).... they still recognized her after all that time! This proved to me how much they care for their rescues!!! AND that my girl is so special. Every night as I tuck my girl to bed and sing “you are my sunshine” to her I thank her for rescuing me! And I send a big thanks to Ruff House Rescue for the selfless work they do to save these pups and prepare them for their furever homes.

In addition to the online application, we had a phone interview, references checked, and they talked to our landlord to make sure we were a safe, loving home. I’d like to share an experience that I had with Ruff House Rescue. I live on Long Island in New York. I filled out an application on their website and was applying for a puppy. It was part of three sisters. I made it through the phone interview and the woman was very pleasant at that point. I was put in touch with a woman that was going to come to my home and make sure it was puppy appropriate. She also was wonderful. But along the way I happened to ask several questions. They were never truly answered such as size the dog will be, breed of dog and type of hair. I was told it was a terrier mix they truly don’t know what the dogs are. I was told it could weigh between 30 and 40 pounds. About two days before I was able to meet the puppy I was called by the woman who took all my information and did the phone interview. She said I was now first in line to pick out any one of the three puppies in the litter. The reason being was the gentleman before me had an apartment and thought the dog would be too big. Hence I started questioning again the size of the dog and what it was. Also I was told the dogs were approximately 8 to 10 weeks old and that day I was told they could be 12 weeks old. I asked the woman who interviewed me by phone if I could please speak to the foster mother. I was told she’s too busy because she has two litters of puppies and babysits and I would be given her number. Next thing I know I’m receiving texts from the woman who took in my application complaining about me to the foster mother. She didn’t realize the texts were coming to me instead of the foster mother. She was downing me to the foster mother because I was asking so many questions two days before the adoption. Needless to say I went to Northshore Animal League. I was treated respectfully told exactly how old the puppy was and what type it was. Three hours later I came home with a beautiful puppy at half the cost, neutered and it’s heartworm and tick prevention medicine. Shame on you Ruff House Rescue.

Ive rescued quite a few times now from different rescues and RUFF HOUSE was by far my best experience. Their main interest is the well being of their dogs. They were the only rescue to get back to me within 24 hrs and the entire interview and meet and greet process was complete by that weekend. Everyone was friendly and professional, and again the dogs best interest was first and foremost. A rescues main priority should ALWAYS be all about the dogs and RUFF HOUSE is just that. They were very protective of their fur-babies and very careful where the babies are placed. I respect that in a rescue. It proves to me that they really care about their animals. I am very disappointed to say the least with this organization. After purchasing a puppy a few years ago my family and I decided it was the right time for another pup and wanted to adopt. After completing an online application I was contacted by a volunteer to review it. We spoke about how I have two children ages 8 and 2 and that we have a young small breed dog (9 lbs) in the home. I expressed interest in a litter of pups that were believed to be a small breed and explained that my children were very good with him and that we hoped for another small dog to be a companion for him and to complete our family. The conversation went well and I was even told that I would be approved for a puppy as soon as I scheduled a home visit and was also told that with this particular litter of pups I could first foster one until it was cleared for adoption and then adopt. This excitement was cut short when I received a call the next day in which I was told that I would not be able to adopt the puppy I was interested in nor would I be able to adopt a puppy at all for that matter. I was told because I have a two year old I could not adopt a puppy... that it is their policy and that I could look on their site for an adult medium sized dog. I was left feeling extremely discouraged and hopeless. I also feel like my family has been pre-judged. If the home visit had been conducted they would have seen what a wonderful family we are for a puppy and how well my two-year old interacts with and loves his best friend our small dog. Dont get me wrong because I completely understand that these people want to make sure these animals are going to safe appropriate homes but it is a different story to not even had met someone or to have seen their family environment and to judge based on the age of their children. It is also a shame for these pups that miss out on the opportunity for a loving home sooner then later.

I am incredibly disappointed in this rescue. We worked all week to get the house ready to adopt what likely would have been a great pup and addition to our current pups pack. They knew we were coming for a meet and greet. They knew my son was with me, along with my dog, and that we were on our way. Then they call to tell me to turn around because the dog was being adopted.I’m happy she found a home but I’m so angry that they didn’t have the decency to tell the other adopter that a family was on their way and to give them an hour. My son had to hear it on speaker phone and is heartbroken. We were told to turn around.Word of advice, if you plan to adopt through them, don’t go without a completed application and home visit. Don’t bother. It says on the website to complete the application the week before you plan to attend the adoption event, yet, it takes over a week to get the application processed and a home visit arranged. The sad part is that I won’t be going through them in the future. They had two guaranteed adopters for Snow, there is a chance the meet and greet might not have went well and we would have tried to find another dog through them. There is a chance it would have went super well, Snow would have come home with us today, and that adopter would have fallen in love with another pup there. So now they have one dog adopted out, a devastated kid, and a family that won’t recommend or encourage others to adopt through them. When they could have had two pups sleeping their forever homes tonight.Such a shame and unfortunate turn of events. We will continue our search but it won’t be with Ruff House Rescue NY.

DO NOT GET ANIMAL FROM HERE. Ruff House is a mobile Kill Shelter. My adopted dog came with ticks, kennel cough, mange, gardia and other parasites. When I asked if there were any pre-existing conditions, their staff said she was in perfect health! After 4K in vet bills later and the transmitted diseases affecting my other dog who almost dog, on top of my adopted dog almost dying, they said I would be fully refunded. It’s almost been two weeks and now no one has responded. Which is now why I’m handing it off to the people handling the litigious side of things. Again, go to North Shore, anywhere but here. This is the worst agency on the planet and I can’t believe they are still licensed. They are a mobile Kill Shelter! Worst thing is everything my dog had is transmittable so it means every other dog that was adopted that day may have had the same!!To further report on this - The Director Diane sent an email with threats to (illegally) attain my dogs medical records and challenge our home as being fit owners. We have already had one of our friends (who volunteers) check our property and knows the incredible quality of life we gave the dog. Again, empty threats to intimidate someone who took an incredibly sick dog from this agency and nurtured them back to health. If you are not prepared for that, do not use this agency.!!!!

First and foremost I need to thank Ruff House Rescue for making me a dog mom again. My fiancee and I are fostering to adopt a Shepherd mix Scooby (formerly known as Gregory). Ruff house rescue has been working above and beyond to make sure we were completely ready to bring a dog into his furever home. They provided us with alot of information on what to expect the first few days, weeks and months with a rescued dog as well as a list of basic essentials needed prior to the dogs arrival home. When we went to the meet and greet we originally had a certain dog in mind however he was not the best fit for us. RHR would not just give any dog to just any family, they certainly went out of their way to make sure we were paired up with a dog that not only connected with us, matched our personalities/lifestyle and that my fiancee, Scooby and I all felt comfortable with one another. You can tell Scooby has been through alot in his previous life before RHR saved him and brought him to NY. In the two weeks that we have had Scooby, he went from not wanting to sit at all the first night with his tail tucked in to constant tail wags, belly rub demands, showing us he loves playing with dog toys and just being such a happy dog. Seeing him come around so much has been such a rewarding experience. I knew adopting a rescue would have its challenges due to not knowing the full background of a dog but rescuing Scooby has been a dream come true to me. Our hearts are full with Scooby in our lives. I am so beyond thankful for all the hard work all of the RHR volunteers are doing in their spare time to make sure all of these rescues do go a loving home. Dayna has been amazing with even checking on how Scooby is doing. Pat has been wonderful with Scoobys medical needs. I am definitely missing a few names but some of the volunteers had a chance to see Scooby the following week and were so impressed with his progress. Just seeing how much everyone cared about him even after he left RHR just shows how much heart all the volunteers have for what they do. Thank you again RHR for making us pawrents.

Those people of the RHR are very bureaucratic. They make you sign their application with so many personal questions, and at the end they do not respond to you. They want to give you a sick dog. A Lady named Johana think what is good for you. Do not waist your time, and go Upstate to buy the dog of your dream. I did that after being waiting, and waiting. I am very happy with my puppy after so much trying with these people.. Do not waist your time. I own a house with a fenced back yard, and nothing qualified me according to them because I do not have a car to bring the sick dog they want to give me to the Vet every single month.🤔😕

I have to disagree with the 1 star reviews stating they make you jump through hoops to adopt a dog. Yes they did a home visit. Yes they want to see how our kids and 2 dogs would react to meeting a new dog but thats what make this place great. There are numerous dogs that get adopted only to be given away because they couldnt handle it from places that say you want to adopt this dog you can take him/her home right now, thats why they do home visits and meet and greets. We love our new member of the family and thank you for letting us adopt Lincoln.

Great adoption experience.I got the sense that these guys really care about their animals and where they end up. They are thorough. That means they have a written application and have an investigator contact you and ask follow up questions. They call your references. They meet you and visit your home. This is for your benefit as well as the animals. They host adoption events. There were plenty of animals and people there - dont be overwhelmed by the noise. You get to spend as much time as you need bonding with your prospective animal and they are with you all the way to make sure things seem like a good fit.As far as the dog we got... he is an absolute gem. You can tell he was well cared for and loved despite not being fostered and being with them for over 5 months. He was clearly socialized and in great health.Ive heard people talk about rescuing a dog as if youre going to get some crazed dog that is going to have major issues. This was not the case with our dog or any of the animals I saw at the adoption event.

Stay away!!!!! Most unprofessional organization I have ever dealt with.I fostered (for a week) to adopt in order to make sure my current dog got along with the new pup( it took over 5 hours to fill out the papers and the pup was right off the truck from Texas - dirty, thirsty and exhausted) . Within the week I called to finalize the adoption. They had me call two different people and then no one got back to me. I called and texted for over a month. Finally I took the pup in for shots that should have been included with adoption fee. I called and texted two more time when they did get back to me it was a barrage of late night calls and texts demanding I contact them. When I responded they again did not get back to me for weeks. When I tired to explain to the the director that it is not my fault they did not respond and it was irresponsible to not get her shots. So I was deducting the cost of the shots from the fee. They refused and threatened to try and take the dog after not hearing from them for months. I have rescued multiple dogs over thirty years and I have never dealt with such horrible unorganized and rude people. DO not adopt from them there are plenty of other rescues.

I tried to adopt from Ruff House last year. I filled out the application, did everything they asked of me including sending in pictures of my home, fenced in backyard etc. Discussed a particular dog I was interested in adopting and was never able to go to see the dog. They never have regular hours where you can actually see the dogs. Also they try steering you towards other dogs other than the one you want. Also $500.00 adoption fees. Really? I could buy a puppy (purebreed) for that. They make their adoption process unnecessarily difficult. A real hassle. We adopted a wonderful dog from Bobby & the Strays. They were a pleasure to deal with. They did a home check and the adoption process was easy. Would highly recommend. Ruff House no way.

Went through the application, phone interview and home visit process. Purchased fencing that the home inspector told us we needed. $536.00 and had it installed within 20 hours. Our backyard is 1/3 of an acre of land with fencing enclosing the entire thing. Had two previous fur babies for the 20 years we lived at this home. EVERY neighbor has a dog and not one dog has entered our yard, nor has our dogs ever escaped our yard. We we denied because we live on a busy street? Thats discriminatory. So regardless of a families willingness to love and cherish their forever pup, because your house is located on a busy street, you will be denied. But they wont tell you that until after you invest in the repairs they request. Disappointed and heartbroken does not explain how we feel. We were trying to adopt the sibling to a dog our niece just adopted so the dogs could grow up together. She lives right off a beach. I guess having no fencing and living in an studio apartment is better than a home with a huge backyard.Makes not sense. Dont bother with this non profit organization. They really didnt do what was right for this set of siblings thats for sure.

Beware! Had a terrible experience with Ruff House. After filling out an application, and conducting a phone interview and being told I needed to bring video of my house and have a tag with the dogs name on it we drove over to their adoption event to meet the dog. On my application, I specifically requested to meet a particular dog. I guess its my fault for not literally interpreting the original reply to my application which said, are you available to meet dogs this weekend. We came with a specific desire to meet one dog. Imagine the disappointment when we were told on arrival that the dog was already fostered to adopt. Which meant that she was going home with a family for a week as a trial. I was then told there are other dogs we could look at instead. Except for a few others which were also conveniently spoken for. The other issue that I had was that they stated that the dog was a year old when she was clearly older than that and it was obvious that she had had puppies already. Thankfully, I had prepared my 9 and 5 year old that nothing was definite and that we needed to be sure the dog was a good fit for our family. My suggestion is that at the onset of the interview, that you clearly state your policies are first come, first serve at these events. Shame on you!

I cannot say enough about this rescue! Every single person who volunteers there is amazing. I adopted two of their rescue pups a few months ago and had nothing but great experiences from the start. Melissa is caring and very straightforward which I really appreciate. Sheryl is great as well! Mattia and Kathleen are the foster moms who fostered both litters of which I adopted from. They are so dedicated and selfless..its truly heartwarming to see how much they care for these pups. On another note, I was so shocked to see some of the complaints about this rescue. I, personally, WANT a rescue to conduct a thorough background check. I mean how could anyone argue about having a fence before taking home a pup..I guess it takes all kinds. And yes, you may wait a long time at one of their adoption events but we have to remember they are giving the dogs to their new families THAT day so of course it will take a while for each individual family to complete paper work, etc. Also, the adoption fee covers SO many things including transportation for VOLUNTEERS to transport the animals from kill shelters everywhere ranging from down south to Thailand!! The fee also covers microchipping, spaying/neutering, food for the animals at the shelter, etc. I rarely write reviews but really felt obligated because this rescue is truly amazing and I would hate for a few negative reviews to shy anyone away from adopting these animals who are so in need of loving homes!! Keep up the great work Ruffhouse!! I wish everyone could love and care for animals as much as you guys!

I can write a novel on Ruff House Rescue. My dog died 2 1/2 years ago and my husband and I were broken. We were told about RHR and immediately drove over. Well we found our next love staring right at us. We named her Lucy, a dog no one wanted because she had 2 different colored eyes and was heart worm Positive. We adopted Lucy (named her Lucy for her kaleidoscope eye) and were instantly smitten. RHR couldnt give us a definitive age as know one can but we didnt care. We loved her so. I was so taken by the care and love that the RHR volunteers gave to these pups and the professionalism of Diane and Melissa (they scrutinized my application to make sure we were a good fit for Lucy), that I started to volunteer there myself. I wanted to be part of this extraordinary rescue! 6 months later, we adopted our second RHR pup, Goldie. We thought she would be another great addition to our family and we were right. She has taught Lucy how to be a puppy since she had no puppy life and the two of them keep us on our toes. Even with volunteering there and having a RHR dog, they still reviewed our application (and there were 2 others for the same pup), but we were first and our application was a good fit. We were thrilled and still are. We understood that rescue didnt mean you were going to get to pick your first choice and go home with him/her. Many people can put in applications for the same dog and some may go home unhappy but true rescue families will find another pup to love and know they gave this pup a home and a chance at a good life, one they didnt have before. I give RHR 5 stars plus plus plus!

August 14th 2017 was our fur babies 1 year furever home anniversary. Best year of our lives! Oreo is the sweetest dog I have ever met. When we first met her, she was being called Janna. She was estimated to be between 1 to 2 years old. Ruff house rescued her from a high kill shelter in Georgia.Melissa at Ruff House made sure that Janna would be a good fit for our family which included a very active 10 year old boy and a house cat. Ruff House looked into our living conditions to ensure the safety of the dog and us, before we even met Oreo.Once we laid eyes on Oreo, we knew she was for us. We were allowed to take her by ourselves for as long as we felt it was needed. We walked up and down the street and I even took her for a quick run to make sure she really was leash trained. 1 year later shes still my best running partner. When we returned to the rescue and informed them that we indeed found the perfect fit, they were just as excited as we were. Every single staff member came to congratulate us and say their goodbyes to Oreo (Janna). They all shared a little personal info they had learned about her while they cared for her. Even the owner came over to speak to us and offered advise. She told us several times that if we ever had any questions or concerns to get in touch with them.Melissa still calls to check in every now and again. We always share our photos of Oreo and her many adventures. We always #ruffhouserescue on her Instagram page @destructo_pup, so everyone can see how happy she is!I truly believe Ruff House is a wonderful organization. Horrible experience. I walked in to the Petco they were holding the adopting at. I stood there for 5 minutes before anyone even thought to ask me if I needed help. When I did ask someone whos name is Diane for help. She said you need to fill out an application, then turned around. I then asked her does she have any, she glanced and said you have to fill it out online and gave me a card. Then she turned around again, so again I stood there. I saw another woman there who I guess worked there (but was on her cell phone the entire time I stood there) and asked her were the puppies here a part of the organization and she said yes, then went back to her phone conversation. So now my family and are standing there when I notice Diane walk up to another family and introduce herself while asking them if they were interested in the dog in front them, even asking if they wanted to hold one. So Im highly upset, I go up to her like I have questions and you keep walking away. Her reason? She had to help the other families. Then asked me once noticing my family, was I sure I wanted a dog? Can I handle a dog? She didnt think to even approach us in the same manner she did the other families. So as I was leaving the store I decided to fill out the application and include my experience in the application. I then get an email from Melissa who says Hi Candice, I received your applicationIm sorry for the chaos today however we were inundated with people who had submitted applications in the past week or two.We usually do not adopt to people with very small children.Particularly when they have not had a dog before I was particularly offended by this email. You dont adopt to people with small children? Yet, when I was in the store she allowed a family with a small child to hold a dog. What made me so particular? So I guess its safe to assume I have no experience with a dog because Ive never owned one as an adult with a family. But they never gave me the chance to explain that I have plenty of experience with dogs. I dog sit one of my references dogs all the time. I didnt get the courtesy of a phone call or a follow up. Maybe the organization didnt see my family fit. I wondered why? I traveled to their website and looked at their family album. I didnt see one picture of a particular family that adopted a dog, I would like to believe theyre not biased. I also noticed in the album, there were families with small children in the picture. Strange, being that they dont usually adopt to families with small children.

For a place so compassionate about animals, I expected them to be more compassionate toward humans. My family was denied the opportunity to adopt a dog because my mother is immuno-compromised and therefore unable to be at the adoption event. I understand the value in having all members of the household present, but at some point there has to be some flexibility, particularly during COVID times. It seems to me that if a family wants to give a rescue dog a home, and follows the protocols to the best of their ability -- does the application, the phone interview, and home visit, but only has 3 out of 4 household members present at adoption, because the 4th has health issues and COVID is currently surging-- it would be cold-hearted to turn then away.On the upside, the volunteers seem to be kind and dedicated.

My wife and I were ( operative word) interested in fostering a dog through Rough house or one of the other rescue shelters. During the last 3-4 weeks my wife had been communicating with Pat. Two weeks ago we attended an open house at the Levittown Petco location held by Rough house. My wife had interest in one of two brothers that came in the day before. Since no info was available we left without finding a foster. Mean time my wife stayed in touch with Pat. We returned to Petco yesterday. Both brothers that were new two weeks ago were available. At this point the story changes. It definitely changes for the positive. As busy as they were we were very fortunate that both Pat and Cecilia went above and beyond to make us comfortable and to ensure our planned fostering went well.As it should be Adopting people get priority when choosing a pet. There were two other families that had interest in taking one of the brothers. My wife and I waited an hr or so until they decided. During that time we were able to spend time with each one separately. Each brother had different but loving qualities. Which one would we wind up with if any?As it turned out we were able to foster both. With the amount of attention and comforting time that Pat and Cecelia gave to my wife and I they made it easy to walk away with both pups.I didn’t expect or didn’t think that I wanted one dog let alone two. What is the old saying ”Happy wife happy life”Once we got them home and settled in we fell in love with both of them. They are brothers and it was unbelievable how they acted toward each other. We were so happy that we decided to foster them together. It took us all of an hr to decide to adopt both of them. Yes BOTH!!!!It was meant to be..They are a great addition to our family.Thank you Pat and Cecelia for working with us and helping our family grow.Mike and Chris

Leslie then went on to say I could look at the other dogs but no thats not good customer service. I was so upset and frustrated that I just canceled the whole thing and went to an actual animal shelter. Rescues are too picky about who they give their dogs too and the process is too long. Once she arrived, we asked if we could see the dog and she told us that she found a home for the dog the day before but that we should look at the dogs sister. Beware young pet seekers, these people are ageist. I filed an application to adopt a puppy from this organization. Within minutes I received a denial email which i though was an error considering it came back so quickly. The following day i reached out for clarification as to why I had been denied. I was emailed by Mary whom said that I had been denied because I was under 25 and did not live in the area. The website does not give any disclosure on age requirements and in regards to the home visit the website discloses that they conduct video calls when physical visits are not an option. After seeing this information, I emailed again for clarification and told her I felt discriminated against because of my age and all that was told to me was that they refuse to send pups home to people under 25. For people claim that all they want is loving homes for their pups, they sure make it hard. Age should not determine my aptitude and ability to care for a puppy but apparently this organization is full of ageist people.

Did not let an adoption go through because of where the owners lived - but not because of the quality of their home, or the history of their dog ownership, but because no one should own a dog on [this busy street], its too dangerous, completely disregarding the owners ability to take care of their dog, as if they dont KNOW they live on a busy street and would have to keep an eye out. I guess they thought these new owners are too moronic to know that. I suppose they would deny someone who lived on other main roads as well, which would only serve to keep dogs in their kennels longer.

An adoption application was put in before the organization announced that they werent accepting any new ones (because of an overwhelming response due to COVID stay at home orders.) Understandable, if they received too many. However, the older applications were never processed and new applications werent being accepted, but the organization continues to post new dogs up for foster OR adoption. This is extremely misleading, as I was interested in and applied to adopt several dogs from them. It is not difficult to send an auto-reply email, advising someone who wants to (and can) provide a good home for a dog that their application was either reviewed and not approved, or that someone else was selected for this particular dog. Additionally, if this organization truly is having trouble keeping up with and processing any applications, and is only accepting applications for particular dogs each day or week (whatever the case is) then they should only advertise those dogs on their social media accounts. I continue to see ads on Facebook, Instagram stories/posts, and on their website of new dogs, that seem to be unattainable because old applications arent being processed, and new applications arent being accepted. I completely understand that the volunteers are overwhelmed, but every time I had followed up, I wasnt given a viable response. The system is faulty, and a revision is in order.

I was rejected because I did not pass the qualifications of a checklist that was generated to deal with the volume of applications during the COVID process. The initial response did not actually specify what the basis for the rejection was and if there was anything that could be done to remedy whatever was defective in my application. Oddly, they elected to respond to my follow up requests by refusing to provide an explanation for the rejection. I fully appreciate the effort and work that goes into running a rescue shelter and I fully understand the limited bandwidth people may have during the COVID crisis. However, I do think that if the priority is the safety and well-being of the animals, the bare minimum should be transparency in your process and how someone can make themselves better candidates. I understand that pet adoptions have fortunately increased as a result of COVID, but I would think that the process of qualifying AND DISQUALIFYING potential homes for adoption would be a careful and transparent process. I was rejected within 24 hours of my submission and told to wait until after COVID. I was more than willing to be patient to understand the process and evaluation but somehow expedited responses has become the priority during the COVID. Im not questioning their treatment of the animals but I do question if this process is the best way to find the best homes for the animals if you are in such a rush to qualify people. I would think with the volume of applications would give them the ability to focus more on a quantitative analysis, rather than just having a mysterious checklist with some kind of automatic disqualifiers. The focus on rapid responses seems to be more to accommodate the volunteers than the animals.

Applied for a puppy (for fee) and DENIED!!! No reason given. The puppies are still looking for adoption weeks later when they could be in a loving home and getting our undivided attention. This is why people go to breeders. SHAME!

If i could leave NO STARS i would for this joke of a rescue facility!! ill explain why,not having a pooch since my childhood i decided it was time to acquire one and why not a rescue dog from a local rescue, didint realize the extensive drawn out process and high fee but i did it,from the online app to the phone interview to the foster mom of the beagle(Mr.Peabody) i picked out coming to my house not once but twice so they can see if my wife was on board w this along w my kids,my house and yard was video taped to make sure it was a safe and fenced in,so the foster mom Cathleen says she approves and shell help arrange adoption,im told to get a dog tag w dogs name/address which i did and email owner Melissa,i wait ALL day w no response and then send 2 more emails, apparantly this is the only form of contact they prefer, finally Melissa responds @ the end of the NEXT day explaining she is dealing with a medical emergency and shell be in touch?! Now im on vacation and we are all ready to acquire Mr Peabody, not even the foster mom is getting back to me,OR Diane the other woman in charge, just silence!im totally disgusted and turned off by the lack of communication and now im out money for engraved dog tag AND have to explain to my family there is NO DOG COMING HOME with us!Thanks for nothing Ruff House of Freeport and shame on you!- Most recently I contacted the foster mom and she said that I was rude and I was harassing her so in no way shape or form did they try to work things out, nor was i combative lol its no wonder more dogs are not adopted and its because places like this! Good luck Mr. Peabody

Out of state attempting to adopt a dog because their site stated they would be willing to FaceTime or video chat instead of the physical in home interview. My application was denied because “there’s no volunteer to do a physical at home interview”. So who really knows why I got denied.

I agree with everyone who gave a 1 Star. This is not an animal rescue. We went above and beyond to adopt to be “denied”. This is not adopting or saving a life especially the fees we were willing to pay to be told no and break everybody’s hearts. They a very selective. Don’t waste your time and I will spread the word. Not a rescue but a factory just like the pet stores with picky restrictions. Terrible sad. May as well pay the extra couple of hundred dollars and get what you want. Very sad and disappointing.

Unfortunately Ruff House Rescue did not contact for many weeks after I submitted my application. In addition they did not respond to my Emails or voicemail. Most of the time when I called the mailbox was full so I did not leave a message. When I finally received a call I had already adopted elsewhere.

Fostering or adopting an animal is one of the nicest things you can do but sometimes people dont understand the responsibility that comes along with it for this reason there are very strict adoption guidelines in order to protect the animals that we love so much occasionally some families or individuals our turned away from adopting a pet its not that theyre bad people but the rescue might believe its in The Animals best interest they cannot adequately take care of the animals these individuals sometimes become angry instead of realizing the rescue is probably doing them a favor when youre as passionate as we are about your animals you treat them as a family member and anything other than that is unacceptable.

We decided to adopt a puppy during this pandemic since our family would all be home and have extra time to train him. We submitted an application to Ruff House with several dogs we were interested in and heard back immediately. Jameson, a 6 month old hound mix, was in a foster home and available for adoption. We met him that weekend and fell in love. Jameson had a cough and the foster mom nursed him back to health and made sure he was good to go before we picked him up. The entire process only took a couple of weeks and Jameson has been with us for almost a month now. He has the sweetest personality, he is fully trained and has just brought so much happiness to our family. Everyone who meets him, falls in love. Thank you to all the hardworking, animal loving people who work so hard to bring families and animals together. We will always be grateful.
