Our little rascal Sammy, wandered from our property this morning. He was picked up by a concerned neighbor who brought him to the police station, who called the Northwind Kennel to pick him up. Luckily, after a bit of panic, we saw his pic posted on Facebook and were able to track him down. We called Northwind, and they couldn’t have been nicer! They sssured us that Sammy was in a great mood and would be well taken care of until we were able to get there. When we arrived, he was in the front with the staff having a great time! They were so lovely! We really appreciated their warmth and humor on an emotionally challenging afternoon. Thank you Northwind!!!!

I brought my dog and two cats.I picked them up and they seemed ok but two days later, my dog was found Dead in my house. He was Well taken care of by me before that. I spoke to Penny and she seemed surprised.I don’t remember her offering to pay anything nor any remorse. He is buried in a Pet Cemetery. My Vet said he may have had a Cancer or a heart condition that strikes in dogs and kills quickly. I gave this place the benefit of the doubt and later brought two more dogs there and two cats. They survived but now after reading some of the reviews plus Penny has been Arrested Twice, I hesitate to return! A tote bag that I left there filled with Prescription food was Not returned either!

URGENT!!!I am not one to write negative reviews but pet owners should be aware. The SPCA of Westchester has notified our community (11/13/24) of Penny Berks not first but SECOND arrest towards animal cruelty and neglect!! Penny, the owner has ignored and not treated 7 dogs from the Distemper Virus, amongst other issues posted throughout these reviews. Those 7 helpless animals had to be euthanized as a result from her neglect. Owners have stated that their pets have returned from this kennel sick/thin or never acting the same. PLEASE PLEASE be aware of who or where you choose to place your pets for care. This is such a shame that so many animals have already endured a terrible fate.*** The SPCA of Westchester have posted this on their facebook page for those who want more information

We have been using Northwind Kennels to board our two rescue dogs for over two years now. One of our dogs has issues and can be difficult to handle. I have nothing but praise for Penny and the team at Northwind Kennels as they have helped our dog become more sociable and I am always confident/happy to drop the dogs off when we go away knowing they will be well cared for.

FROM SPCA: The SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement Unit, under the direction of Ernest Lungaro, have arrested Penny Berk of Bedford, NY for a second time and have charged her with two additional counts of animal cruelty, totaling 7 counts to date. On October 4, 2023 SPCA Westchester officials observed two Cattle Dog/Australian Shepherd mixes in distress and displaying severe symptoms of the Distemper Virus while in Ms. Berk’s care. The two mixes, named Felix and Nelly (formally Sasha) were coughing and having difficulty breathing. They were also lethargic and had visible nasal discharges. Felix and Nelly were brought to a local animal hospital where they were diagnosed with the Distemper Virus and had to be euthanized as their condition had deteriorated to the point that they could not be saved. No records could be produced by Ms. Berk showing that either dog had received veterinary care. It appears that Felix and Nelly entered Rescue Right on or before April 30, 2023.Ms. Berk was also arrested by SPCA Westchester officials and charged with 5 counts of animal cruelty this past July when five Bernese Mountain Dogs were discovered in critical condition at Rescue Right while suffering with the Distemper Virus after being denied veterinary care. It is important to note that the Distemper Virus is highly preventable with proper vaccinations and timely medical treatment. Felix and Nelly, like the 5 Bernese Mountain Dogs, were neglected for too long by Ms. Berk. They suffered and never truly had a chance.Ms. Berk’s next court appearance is set for January 23rd at the Mount Kisco Justice Court. If you witness or suspect an animal is being abused or neglected, please call the SPCA’s Cruelty Hotline at (914) 941-7797.

I have volunteered here for quite some time. I would not consider going any where else to board a pet. Penny goes above and beyond to take care of all the animals here an the staff is great. I personally have taken multiple dogs out on park walks an it is always a great feeling seeing how happy they are. If you want a great place look no further.. Also to those that say disrespectful or hurtful things pertaining to this facility. Maybe you should come down and personally visit the dogs for a first-hand experience instead of going on what somebody is telling you just to create a problem...

When I lived in Bedford, I used this place one time for my Rottweiler and let me tell you something. I don’t know what they did to this dog, but the dog was never the same when he came home. This was in 2011 and I promised myself never ever ever bring my dog there again! So reading the article is no surprise to me.That goes to show after all these years finally, it has been bought to the ears of the right folks!

Northwind Kennels, Penny and team are so wonderful, loving and caring to all animals, and we are so thankful for their attention and love for our pup Hennessy. Hennessy was sheltered by Northwind for 3 years when a foster or adoptive family could not be found, and now we take him back for boarding when we are out of town. He is not nervous about going back, and loves the staff and volunteers there! They love Hennessy like their own. In fact, most recently when I went to pick Hen up from NWK, I saw one of their team members who recognized me, and told me he had just been hanging out with Hennessy and had taken him outside to relax for a bit, he was sitting down in the yard relaxing with another dog when he told me that. With over 100 dogs at anytime, it means so much to me that they give the animals individual attention and care. Not just walks, but taking the time to relax and enjoy the outdoors together. It really made me feel so happy to know Hennessy had that one on one time with this particular person (who I know Hen loves)! The money you donate to or spend at Northwind helps rescue and shelter more animals! When I was last there, Penny had taken in kittens that someone had dumped, and was caring for them out of the kindness of her heart, all while talking through the care and attention she would give someones pet who was being boarded for the first time. You can also specify any dietary restrictions, vitamins, special needs and even if you would like the animal to get a bath before they come home.We adopted Hennessy via Pound Hounds Res-Q, but Penny and Northwind had been housing Hen for 3 years to keep him off the kill list until someone could adopt him. The team, including James and Steve, allowed us to stop by in the weeks preceding the adoption to meet Hennessy (and so they could vet us to make sure we were the right family). We are so thankful for the love, attention, training, and veterinary care our dog received in the years before we met him.We included photos from our adoption day, hikes in the woods, the front bench where Hennessy liked to sit and people watch, and some kisses he was giving James who helps to take care of Hennessy when we are gone and when Hen was living there.Thank you to Northwind, Penny and team!

MY CATS ALMOST DIED WHILE BOARDING AT NORTHWIND KENNEL. I decided to write this post because my cats had an awful, near-death experience at Northwind Kennels in December 2022. And now, I heard that Northwind Kennel/Rescue Right was inspected by the SPCA in early October 2023 due to a distemper outbreak amongst the dog population.I boarded my two cats there during Christmas 2022, for about two weeks. When I went to pick them up, the girl at the desk who went to the back room to get my cats came back and said that she was unable to get them into their carrier. She asked me to go to the back with her, which I did. What I saw was absolutely horrendous. The room that they were in was filthy, there were dozens of cats roaming around, there was litter everywhere, and I did not see any food or water. It did not appear that the cats in the room were resting or playing contently. They seemed agitated. Against the wall were cages, most of which were empty. The cages on the bottom row had their doors open so the cats could go in and out freely. I found my cats at the back of these cages, frail and barely moving. I gently picked them up, put them into their carrier, paid the bill and left. When I got home and could examine them more closely, they both had runny eyes and noses, and were wheezing. One cat was skin and bones and almost dead. I immediately called my vet and brought the cats to her, thinking that I was going to have to euthanize the skinny one. The vet said that they both had a severe respiratory infection and they had both lost a significant amount of weight. The skinny cat lost roughly half of her body weight while boarding. The vet advised medication and kitten food for both of them (even though they are 12 years old) multiple times per day so that they could gain back some of their weight.I called Northwind Kennel and spoke to Penny, the owner. I told her what happened and she acted surprised, but immediately offered to pay the vet bill of $865. She Venmo’d me that day and didn’t ask a lot of questions.I believe that my cats were either not fed and lacked access to water while boarding, or that the conditions in the boarding room traumatized them and they were too terrified to come out of the back of the cage to eat. Either way, clearly nobody was looking out for the welfare of my cats during this time. There is simply no way that a cat can lose half of her body weight with nobody noticing in a well-managed facility. Had anyone been paying attention, I would have expected a phone call during their boarding period to let me know that my cats were ill or not eating. I was utterly shocked when I saw their condition upon picking them up.If you care about your pets, don’t bring them to Northwind Kennels.

Great place to board your furry family member. Ive been boarding my dog, Gem, here for years, and have always had great care, and no nonsense service. The owner, Penny and her staff are exceptional. Penny is extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and professional, but shes also genuinely caring. We experienced this first hand during Gems last stay. Gem suffers from seizures, to which Penny and her staff diligently administer his strict regimine of meds during his stays. Unfortunately, he suffered a cluster a seizures for the first at the kennel. Penny instantly called me, and we determined Gem needed immediate veterinary care. Without hesitation Penny sprang into action, and she and her husband took Gem to his vet for emergency treatment. Outstanding! I knew I didnt have to worry about a thing, because Gem was in the best of care with Penny, and his vet who had been treating his condition. Thank you Penny and Northwind. We will be back!

Our family adopted our first puppy, Lucy, from Rescue Right (the animal shelter affiliated with Northwinds Kennel). The entire experience was beyond magical. Penny was always available-I know because I texted her almost every day once I heard this particular litter was coming in. When we adopted our dog, she was healthy (Penny is very careful to ensure her animals are in amazing condition when theyre adopted) and exactly as Penny had described over the phone. She took the time to bring every single puppy from the litter out one by one so our kids could meet him/her. We fell in love with Lucy the minute we saw her. The weeks following the adoption, I stopped by Rescue Right regularly for advice, routine healthcare, and to have their people take Lucy to be spayed. Every interaction with Penny and her staff was amazing...I mean, I was even sending Penny pictures of Lucys vomit to analyze. About 6 months after adopting Lucy we started boarding her at Northwinds Kennel. First of all, if you adopt an animal at RR, the price to subsequently board that animal at Northwinds is amazing. Lucy is never in a crate, goes outside all the time and most of all is always excited to go to Northwinds. The first few times Lucy stayed at Northwinds, we were working on getting her to gain weight. The staff at Northwinds was super attentive to that, even suggesting medication and special foods and observing her when we were away. When you have your animal with Penny, its almost like having a vet watch him or her-thats how knowledgable Penny is. We will always use Northwinds to board our animals and Rescue Right to adopt them. This is a special place with special people who deeply care about animals. When you board an animal at Northwinds you are also doing something good for all animals as you are supporting Rescue Right, which is a great feeling. In conclusion, Penny is stuck with us forever and can look forward to 6:00am photos of dog vomit and texts like Um....is this normal? from me for years to come!

I recently went back to this shelter because i adopted my first ever cat here almost 11 years ago. It was a good experience then..however a lot seems to have changed. The cat barn where they keep majority of cats was absolutely filthy. The majority of the cats were suffering from sickness and the place looked like it hadn’t been Cleaned for weeks/ months. I had second hand embarrassment for them to even SHOW us the space. They need to improve their care and cleanliness for their animals. If they cant afford to care for them... stop taking them in!

It was a painless process that took just two days mainly because my wife and I needed a night to think it over. Penny didnt pressure us and allowed us to take our time.A few weeks later we went away on a trip and I reached out to Penny if she wouldnt mind popping in to our house once a day to let the dog outside and to say hi to Millie. We live just a few houses down from Northwind. She said she would be happy to and did not want to charge us. I couldnt believe it it. She definitely went above and beyond to provide excellent service. Millie will need to be spayed in a few months and I know she will be in good hands.

I adopted a cat from this shelter in October. Prior to adoption I asked them to look into a cough I noticed that cat had, they owner brushed it off as allergies. Two days later once he arrived home he was coughing up a lot of blood. The shelter tries to do the right thing by having an adoption center but the owner micro managers and cannot allow for proper care and support. I reached out several times and communicated my thoughts an feelings as I was upset and concerned that I adopted a dying cat for 200.00 (rip off) . I was told that the cat was from Egypt and they are healthier then American cats. Long story short, she was rude when I expressed that I felt the cats care had been neglected over the years and that they need to keep the place cleaner bc my cat brought home a severe flea infestation that was not properly treated by the shelter. two months after adoption and over 1,000 in vet care I was forced to put the cat to sleep as there was nothing that could be done. I asked for a refund as I basically just assisted with caring for the cat and got a response that if I want a refund I can return the cat. I was not about to do the cat a disservice and bring it to that place where the women was nothing was nasty, late with her responses , and made me wait three weeks to adopt and when I went to pick him up made we wait an hour while she was at her house then scrambled for paperwork. They have no problem taking your money and pretending they are no fault, when in fact they were at full fault. If you choose to board your pet I spoke with several people who no longer board there due to over-crowding difficulty communicating with the owner and waiting on their pick up. Cats up for adoption roam with the other cats that are boarded. She denied this but you can see it with you own eyes. Prepare for fleas when you bring your pet home. The only reason I gave this one star is bc I took good care of the cat they gave me and was glad I could give him a good two months outside of that place.

If I could leave no stars I would. I am in the process of looking to put my cat up for adoption as well as getting him medical attention as I cannot take him to the vet due to low funds and was referred to this business by the SPCA. I called and spoke to the owner who, instead of politely informing me that they were a kennel and didnt offer those services, rudely told me to take him elsewhere and then asked me if she was just supposed to do it for free. I am not looking for a handout, I just know my vet will be expensive and was hoping that they would be able to work with me on the price. I told them that it was disgusting that they cared more about the money than helping animals and hung up and the owner proceeded to call me back and harass me, yelling why should she be responsible for helping peoples animals for free. (Again, I never said I was looking for free services but she kept screaming instead of listening to me.) I just wanted to warn everyone of the experience I had here before they decide to do any business with this place.

I have adopted a pup from a rescue group, which uses their services to board their dogs while trying to find them a home, one of which was savagely killed at their facility recently. After hearing the story, I felt I had to write a warning on their yelp page. I spent seven years working at a boarding facility, called the New York Dog Spa and Hotel. As a shift manager, I would never have handled such a terrible situation so carelessly. Are you people from the rescue oblivious to the fact that what a dog does isn’t the fault of the kennel? This kennel is amazing and prior to this incident your Rescue used them. Do you even know the history of the dog that attacked? Was it a rescue? Stray? Was it being attacked by the bonded pair and reacted? So if you bring a rescue into your home and it bites you or your child or kills another animal, should you be blamed for it? You can’t predict a dog’s behavior, just like you can’t predict that you won’t be rear ended by a drunk driver. Things happen all of the time that we can’t predict. I’m very concerned that this cocker spaniel Rescue is even a rescue when they don’t know the first thing about dogs and their behavior.

If your looking to adopt , please adopt from here but let me warn you of a few things that come with adopting from here ...1. Poor communication from staff it took me almost 2 weeks with constant email and follow up of application to actually get the cat.2., fleas and lots of them3. Animal may not be healthy as reported by the adoption center . They were asked about one of the cats we were adopting Bc we noticed it was coughing . The owner brushed it off as allergies .... offered meds but never actually sent them. My Cat began coughing up massive amounts of blood less then 2 weeks later . well if you have had a pet before you know the drill ... the vet followed by astronomical vet bills and now regularly monitoring needs to take place Bc the cat is now a special needs cat due to poor conditions of the kennel.4. Shots were all out of date and was told at adoption center that they were up to date ... not according to paperwork5. Poor oral hygiene rotted teeth6. The owner does not allow her team to assist with the adoption process. I’m sure she means well but if she is not present at the time you would like to adopt ... your out of luck .7. We saw a cat online we were interested in,when asked to see the car several times we were ignored and other options were available with no expanation.8. There was a cat in the cat house that was supposed to be kept in his cage due to a disease he had and could not share his food/ water with other cats . When returning for a second time we noticed the cat was not in his cage and running around , when asked about where he was we were ignored . — cat could be spreading diseasePlease adopt from here to get the animals out and in the proper hands just be prepared that it’s not a simple rescue , but if you truly want to save a life please help .Lastly if you plan to board please be aware your pet will be along side these sick animals and a serious flea infestation

I arrived as they supposedly opened and waited till 9:50. No one showed up to check in dogs and I was not the only client waiting. Their incompetent staffing forced me to bring my dog to a funeral in New Jersey. I am appalled they think this is an acceptable way to manage a business. I WILL NEVER GO BACK!
