Found the love of my entire life here - French Toast (pictured) almost 2.5 years ago at this wonderful shelter. Christina helped me from the moment I walked in the door to the moment I walked out with my kitty after awaiting paperwork, background checks, etc. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Met lots of beautiful kitties here but this one really stood out to me and I knew I had to give her a forever home. I will forever be grateful I came across this shelter for giving me my best friend in the entire world. Best decision I ever made. Adopt don’t shop!!! This is the place to go.
This shelter is the best. The cats here are so loved and taken care of. Christina and her staff make it clear that the care and safety of these animals is the #1 priority. I’ve been lucky enough to adopt from here and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made! Christina and the staff know the cats and their distinct personalities very well and she took that into account when matching me with a cat. There’s a lot that goes into deeming someone fit to adopt and there’s many reasons why someone could get denied. They know that the cats at the shelter are in very good hands, so they have every right to be choosy about who they adopt to. People complaining and leaving negative reviews are simply proving them right! I have nothing but positive things to say about this place. Couldn’t recommend them enough!
This is the best cat shelter. The employees are all such caring people. The person who runs the shelter (Christina) is exceptional! She puts her entire heart and soul into making sure all the cats at the shelter are well taken care of, loved and goes the extra mile to find the perfect home for them. It’s a great animal shelter.
The cats who call this shelter home are beyond loved and so well taken care of. Christina & staff are all such amazing people, they truly care and dedicate their lives to making sure all of the cats feel loved!
Im a long time employee here and our priority is the cats and the best interest for them. We come in everyday making sure the furbabies are taken care of and that theyre getting our positive vibes and maximum effort. I can go forever about this place but words cant really explain how amazing our cats are and how much we care for them. I highly recommend you come and see what I see and fall in love with one of our furbabies. Trust me you wont regret it.
Thank you to all of the staff for all that they do on a daily basis. From the moment you walk in you can immediately tell that all of these cats are well cared for. We took our newest family member home a couple of weeks ago and the process was methodical and well-vetted to ensure that every cat was going to an excellent home. Im attaching a photo of the card that we received which left us speechless -- everyone was so thoughtful and kind throughout the process! Do not hesitate to come here to adopt your next rescue.
You cannot do better than huntington cat shelter. I am a first time cat mom and the questions i had were relentless as you can imagine but nonetheless, the staff answered every one of them diligently and well informed in their response. from management to the front desk you can tell the shelter is run smoothly keeping it a clean and happy home for the cats during their stay there! my geoffrey came to my partner and i happy and healthy.
I participated in the secret Santa they ran for the cute little furballs and it was so much fun, the cats here are all lovable in one way or another. The shelter is clean, well stocked and so much fun to go to! Fell in love with a couple of cats after only 1 visit!
Town of Huntington Cat Shelter is a wonderful cat shelter operated by Little Shelter where the employees truly care about the cats as if they were their own. Instead of being cooped up in cages, as is typical in shelters, the cats can roam free and socialize with each other. TOHCS has a very knowledgable and experienced staff that puts a lot of time and effort into each adoption. They know each cat’s personality and whether they would do best as a single cat or if they would get along with other pets. We have 2 cats at home already and they gave us very helpful instructions on how to introduce our cats to our new girl. Everything they do during the adoption process is for a reason and as a cat mom I appreciate their thorough process. (Side note for new pet parents or those who don’t understand the process- They call your references to make sure youre fit to care for their cats, call your landlord, should you rent, to make sure pets are allowed in your living space. This minimizes the chance of cats being returned- not that they wont take them back in a heartbeat, but so many people adopt animals only to return them, and why put a cat under that much stress of transitioning to a new home only to be returned!) Their attention to detail didnt go unnoticed, we received an explanation of our new cats past history including any medical history down to simple ointments, etc.. Lastly, they sent us home with the best goodie bag full of toys and their current food and treats so they can start off eating what they are used to and then incorporate it into their new diet, should the cat food change in your household. They give recommendations for food and pet insurance. Shout out to Christina who loves our little girl as much as we do and took extra time to help us and let us know we can call any time we have a question; days, weeks, even years from now. So thankful that this shelter exists. If youre thinking of adopting a cat please choose this shelter, the cats here have a great life and if you adopt one, it opens up space for more cats to be under their amazing amazing AMAZING care. Thank you Town of Huntington Cat Shelter for everything you do, I appreciate you more than words can describe.
I simply lost ‘my,’ kitty 3 weeks ago. She had a complicated life.I do believe she had a loving life… I have no idea why she was returned to ROAR three times in Ridgefield Connecticut. I know that one person could not train her cannot urinate on her bed. Nobody would like that however, it is correcrtable. Instead, magic was return to ROAR 2 to 3 times. She was also listed as vicious could never have been further from the truth.I was unfortunately involved with a very mentally ill man, whom they gave this little kitten to for freeThere is no way Other and communicate and tell you that they are in pain. It turns out that Magic had kidney disease. cats only do that to let you know that something is wrong with him. It turns out that Magic had kidney disease.ago and Loving way had a very hard life, and I only got to have her for a little bit less than a year. She was provided with the best health care with ab and the best doctors.I can never possible please replace her and that is not what I’m trying to do.
The love and devotion shown to every animal who enters the building is unmatched. With compassionate staff and high standards for care and cleanliness, this shelter goes above and beyond for the cats in our community.
Got my baby Venom from the town of Huntington cat shelter about 3 years ago, to say that the employees love the cats there is an absolute understatement. The genuine devotion and compassion they have towards the animals in their care is unmatched! I cannot thank Christina and her staff enough between my baby venom and their help with strays/ferals in the community.
I am writing this review because I have mixed emotions. It seems like for others here the process of adoption at this shelter took a fairly long time, like a few weeks, while we were in and out with our baby in one week application and all. Upon meeting our kitty we were told he had a heart murmur which is no biggie in my department as our other cat has one as well. When we went to go visit him and speak with Christine to talk about him again we were told her had a heart murmur, a hole in his heart and that he had worms, so I told her that we will be capable of giving the medication. But regardless of that we moved forward because I knew he deserved owners like us and we were told he never had any applications and that he was Christine’s favorite and he was very special. We’ve had him for a few months now and he was just diagnosed with FIP, a death sentence for cats but we are working with some people to hopefully give him a healthy life.I was curious to know if they did any tests on him before hand and so I called the shelter. To which Michelle said oh no let me get Christine she will speak with you. Christine didn’t come to the phone. All we got was we never did bloodwork and the stress from his new home probably brought it on.I am confused on how you never did any bloodwork on a cat who I was specifically told has had evaluations of his heart and in general seems like a good idea to do prior to releasing them to their forever owner. All in all, I am disappointed in how there seemed to be no care for him after being told “he’s a favorite” and pretty much being told it was our home which brought this on.It would be great to get assistance with compensation for his medication and his full health was obviously not exposed to us prior. While I do have some regrets of the shelter itself, I have zero regrets for my little boy as he is living a much better life with people who are going to medically support him through anything. That’s why I couldn’t give this one star, because he is too precious to ever regret. My main suggestion here is to ask extensively about the animals health records prior to bringing home your forever baby.I’d also like to make a point to say I’m very disappointed in how this shelter is responding to the reviews. You should learn from them and not go at people who are being honest.
Amazing cat shelter . The staff puts so much effort and love into all the cats in the facility. My favorite cat is Kettle, she is so well loved.
Stear clear!!!!! The only Shelter Im aware of that charges $25 application fee after you meet and fall in love with a cat/kitten. Encourage you to visit with the one youre application is being reviewed, which I did, and hind sight regret doing, I fell in love. Although we had stellar references, the Manager Christina made an employee call 5 days after applying and falling in love to say we were denied! Claiming we denied our 13 year old cat, that passed 2 weeks prior, proper vet care and will not allow us to adopt any cats from them which is 100% inaccurate. They make their money on application fees, not finding homes and adopters for cats. Our vet attempted to call to correct any misconceptions from our 13 year olds prior care but they refused to speak to our vet. After recently losing our baby and my first pet, I felt unnecessary terrible loss all over again. The process is cruel and emotional abuse for the humans and cats. Im happy to report we are not unfit pet parents and were approved in hours with a rescuer, arranged to meet a mom and 10 week old daughter we will be taking home once fixed and vetted. We will be a happy family and provide a safe loving home for these babies for a long time. Worst process around!!!! Trust the reviews. If you are not rich pulling up in an expensive car, you will never be approved. How dare they accuse me of denying our baby proper care. We would have done literally anything to save her life and we did!
The greatest cats on earth come from this place. Probably because of the fiercely dedicated staff running the show ❤️
It just goes to show that whether you have years of pet experience or the Pope, this shelter will find anything wrong with you to deny your application. Christina and her sidekick Michelle will fish for anything they don’t like about you no matter how good you are as a person. Their sick and twisted mindset to have you fall in love with a cat and “spend as much time as you want” only to rip out your hearts is part of their notorious behavior. After further research, many shelters have advised us that these two are known to do this to innocent people. My husband were open and honest and very loving of animals. Michelle will lie to your face and backstab you saying “it’s no problem!” to something she learns about you, only to use it against you as a reason to deny your application. They call all your references, ask them strange questions, call past vets for pet history from 1998 which brings up a lot of red flags on how this shelter operates. Plain and simple, they don’t want to give these cats up. You have to basically be a stepford wife and stay in New York forever. I’m shocked they didn’t ask me for a blood sample. Today, we were instantly approved for a tuxedo cat at local shelter who loved us. We didn’t have to deal with the aggrivation, heartbreak and nit picky nonsense. There are cat shelters nearby who want these sweets cats to be with loving people. Ever wonder why you have over 50 cats at your shelter that arent getting adopted? Might be a you problem.
Clean shelter with very well taken care of cats. They’re always happy, clean and fed. Christina who runs the shelter does a phenomenal job and is an amazing person. The staff is also great and you can tell they love and care for all the cats
The town of Huntington cat shelter is full of a wonder staff and management. The only thing better than their team and facility is all the beautiful cats and kittens available for adoption! Please consider giving one (if not more!) of these cats a 2nd chance at leaving the lives they deserve.
Terrible shelter. We are a perfectly loving family of 4 that have owned cats in the past and they did not allow us to adopt. Almost 2 years later and we have 2 cats that we adopted from the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter and they are so loved and cared for! Save your time. No wonder they have tons of cats sitting in a shelter rather than with loving families.
This shelter is my favorite! I have rescuedMultiple cats from this shelter and they are the sweetest angels. The shelter is always clean and you can tell how much the staff truly cares about these cats. They are so loved for and so well taken care of by Christina and her staff. Always extremely knowledgable on every cat and their personality and who would be the perfect cat parent for them. They dont play games and have a trust worthy process for rescuing the cats with their best interest always front and center. I will only forever rescue from this shelter bc I know myself and my kitties will always be in the best hands here. #adoptdontshop
I have two black kittens that are really sweet and it breaks my heart to part from them but i have 3 cats already so i wanted to know if you guys take in cats if someone brings them?
I have visited this shelter on numerous occasions .This is the cleanest shelter I have visited. The cats are well cared for and seem happy .The staff are the most friendliest and caring people .They care about the cat population in their area and will help as much as they can .I would recommend adopting a cat or two from them .
Every corner of this door radiates love for the cats and dedication to their well-being. The staff are all true cat enthusiasts , theyre all knowledgable about each cats personality, quirks and needs. They are truly committed to finding the perfect forever homes for the animals in their care. The cats are provided with a comfortable and stimulating environment. The shelter Is also dedicated to providing TNR for the towns residents.Personally my favorite cat is McDreamy. He has truly started to thrive with all the love and care he receives .
Phenomenal shelter where each and every staff member shows immense compassion. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and possess an in depth understanding of the unique personalities of each of their cats. I’ve had the pleasure of adopting from them several times in the past and the process has always been streamlined and reasonable. I would certainly recommend them to anyone interested in adopting!
Just over three years ago, in the midst of a pandemic, I made the decision to go to the TOHCS to fill the cat-shaped hole in my heart after losing my two girls, Lily &Zoe. Christina and the staff were so welcoming, understanding and knowledgeable, leading me to just the right one…her name is Birdie.💜 I am so grateful to this wonderful organization for the work they do and the lives they change…human and feline! Five stars are not enough…highly recommend!
Amazing staff! Took great care of me while I was adopting my cat, Jangle. Through the process, they were thorough in all parts of the process. Would recommend to anybody trying to get a new friend in their life.
Facility is very clean and well kept. Staff is very knowledgeable about the cats and their personalities and ask potential adopters questions to ensure a good match for a forever home for the cats. They schedule appointments for time slots so that the small facility doesnt get overcrowded, resulting in over-stimulation and stress to the cats.
The cats are unique in their personalities, they are well cared for and look for all forms of interaction
My husband and I want to adopt a cat, we did all the process, is just us 2, no kids or other pets. They deny or process with not explanation, “not a good fit” that is all they say. We really wanted one, we have a nice house, time, money and lots of love to give. The fact that they didn’t want us to adopt for no reason seems unacceptable to us! Depriving a cat to have a nice home and rather be in a shelter with other 97 cats
If I was a cat I would definitely feel safe, taken care of, and loved until I found my forever home…the staff here are so truly invested in helping adopters pick the right cat for them. I volunteer here each week and I definitely recommend you find your next fur baby here!!
We have been caring for a family of Feral cats- We reached out to this shelter and spoke to Michelle about having them Spayed/Neutered. Never having done this before we were thrilled with her patience and understanding. Every aspect of this procedure was explained. We were able to capture and bring in our first patient and the staff was wonderful, everyone was busy but took the time to acknowledge us with kindness. We are one family that has this need, I know there are many more like us therefore I highly recommend and implore Huntington residents to support this wonderful place in any way you can.If anyone is looking to fix a feral cat or to adopt just call ahead , all your questions will be answered.
They have the most amazing cats . Yamitha is my favorite. He’s smirking in the picture😏😏
We are cat owners forever We just lost 2 17 year year old catsLooking to adopt 2 more kittens and this shelter takes a non refundable deposit for several people and then denies you adoption they are just about the $$$ deposit they do not care about giving these kittens a forever loving home DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU WANT A FOREVER PET SCAM!!!!!!
My son was looking for a cat and the staff was kind enough to spend time showing us the cats even though we were a unannounced visit. We didn’t adopt that day but the cats are really well cared for and the staff is great with the cats.
They help a lot of cats ,very clean home for all cats (feral and friendly),they have free TNR program ,they operate by the best little shelter animal rescue which is been helping animal (no kill shelter)in Long Island Ny since 1927.
Caring, loving staff knows all the cats and their personalities there. Very knowledgeable. The cats are kept together in rooms (instead of cages)and have access to a secure outdoor area).
I ADPOTED SUGAR (THE BLACK ONE) TWO YEARS AGO WHEN SHE WAS JUST TWO MONTHS OLD. SHE WAS A SWEETIE THAT IS WHY I CALLED HER SUGAR : )SHE HAS FUNNY BEHAVIOUR HAHAHAHALUCAS HAS STRIPES AND HE LETS ME RUBBING HIS HEAD OR STOMACH 😄
I am horrified!!! I have been involved in cat rescue for many years. This shelter was recommended to me and it looked wonderful when I visited. But DO NOT BE FOOLED!!! I brought a young stray in that I rescued. Despite the fact that I inquired about what vaccinations were given, I was told I could pay extra and make those arrangements when I brought him in to be neutered. My son brought the cat in this morning and I followed up with a call to indicate that I wanted the shots and I did not want his ear notched since I was going to keep him inside. I was then given a completely different story. I had to pay $50 in advance to have the Leukemia test and distemper and Leukemia shots given and they could not guarantee that the ear would not be cut. However, now it was too late and I would have to bring him back again. When I picked up the poor fellow his ear was half off, jagged and disfigured and he was ostensibly sent into the wild as a feral without a distemper shot, leukemia test or shot to infect more animals. How irresponsible is that? Serves me right for trusting anything sponsored by a government. I now have to wait a week, keep the cat quarantined from my other cats and stress him all over again taking him in to a vet. You get what you pay for -he deserved better than this. I hope his ear can be repaired.
USAF vet lost his beloved cat on a house fire who lose everything is denied a shelter cat because he couldn’t prove proper vet care for a stray who saved his life 13 years ago. Story on go fund me Loretta George. Now I’m lucky enough to work at an Animal hospital and they will not allow me to adopt a surrender i fell in love with. To say I’m broken hearted today is a gross under statement. To refuse me a cat when they have 70 in there is unjust to both involved.
My boyfriend got his cat from here and the whole situation was a mess. Too many cats in a cat jail. About 15-20 cats in a small concrete room with about 5 toys. Each cat was terrified and sick. Even the cat he got was sick for weeks after. Although shes a very sweet cat it took a very long time for her to acclimate from the trauma she suffered there. The staff used nets unnecessarily for menial tasks like giving a shot or to put the cat in the carrier i could hear her crying from outside. All the cats are covered in each other’s hair and crowded on each other, nails uncut. Even though the cat he got was raised there she had no social ability, you could tell they just left her and never pet her. She also can’t stand to be picked up probably because they use nets to deal with everything. The staff there was also just ok but you can tell they’re just doing the bare minimum for the cats. I really don’t know how they have 4 stars. I really don’t recommend supporting them.
I called to schedule, and after telling them what I was looking for, they said we have the perfect cat in mind. She is so perfect!!! They were thorough and really want to ensure the cats have a great life. I strongly recommend getting your new best friend from here!
Love them! Hes my baby! So grateful for this place who allowed me to be his forever home❤️
12 years ago I adopted my best friend from this shelter. He sadly passed. Since then we adopted two others, one from here and one from a county shelter. I just went in last week to adopt a new friend. I filled out a lengthy form with multiple references including my vet. They called all of them including the family member I currently live with and take care of their cat! They now demand vet records for a cat that’s not even mine?! 10 shelters minimum between my home and little shelter. 4 weeks out of surgery I drove all the way to Huntington out of loyalty! Never again! 200 cats in the building and I get references from people who’s kids and animals I care for AND I’m a previous adopter and that’s not enough?! IT’S a cat! DCFS doesn’t do this detailed a check! Enjoy the $25 non-refundable deposit. I hope Cecilia enjoys it as much as the 4 bedroom home she just lost out on. Shame on you! Try Shabby Tabby in Huntington! MUCH better!😻😥
I recently adopted a kitten from here and they were absolutely amazing especially Christina! She was super helpful and very sweet with helping me adopt her sweet little foster! She even gave us a little goodie bag for our new sweet girl! I can’t thank you guys enough❤️
I came by the other day to visit with the kitties (who are very beautiful and friendly). The shelter is off the beaten path and was hard to find, it is at the end of a dirt road. Unfortunately the shelter didnt seem that clean or well kept to me. They have a lot of cats so maybe that is why it was so messy, but the workers were sitting around eating pizza and chatting when I walked in. They did help me but that along with getting lost and seeing the mess, was not a good first impression of the place. I loved the cats thought and they seemed healthy and were friendly.
This place is the worst place to get a cat. Here is why - So me and my family decided to get an older cat because a lot of people over look them. But after having the cat home for months we noticed the cat was acting weird. She then ran outside at the first chance and we spent hours trying to get her back. My child was crying and my fiancee was distraught. I called the shelter and they said they don’t know the cats history prior to our adoption but it was clear, by the cats infinity to the outdoors that she was an out door cat. I told them thats not what you said before. They told me she had a previous owner. So after back and forth they said I am in breach of contract and am liable for a fine; then they show up to my house and set the same traps I set the day before and give me dirty looks and refuse to talk to me! Extremely immature. I call multiple times to ask about the traps but they snub my calls. If they really cared about the animal they would of worked with me instead of taking such an aggressive stance. I am shocked at how unprofessional this shelter is. I love animals but unfortunately I will not be using a shelter again after this unnerving experience.
I adopted my cat Simon from here… the people working there are so friendly and helpful… they helped me pick the most perfect boy for our family!!!
This place has always been so lovely! The workers really love the animals they take care of. They’re all really hard workers as well. Everyone there is so friendly and welcoming 100% would recommend to anyone I know on Long Island to adopt from them.
Best animal shelter around. The staff is very attentive and seen to really care about the cats. I have always had great experiences with this shelter!!!
Its a great place to go and see cats and kittens for adoption. I adopted there many years ago and decided to go back and adopted 2 kitties and the experience was amazing. The staff are friendly, helpful and just make adopting so much easier. Michelle is the best and made my adoptions so easy and was there if I had questions. I highly recommend this shelter!!
Best place to adopt. I love it
Lovely place where I adopted my kitten !So helpful with everything !
Very helpful (and compassionate - in my case).
Very special place for rescues of all ages. Kind cat loving staff who want the best for our feline friends.♡
My friend adopted a kitten from there and it was sick had ring worm and gave it to all her other pets and owner. It also has FIP which is a deadly cat disease
This is a great cat shelter. After i lost my two beloved cats i became a volunteer and enjoy these beautiful cats. The staff are very dedicated and love these cats. i always feel welcome and i am very impressed with Christine and her phenomenal team
Love it!! Wonderful place.
I have no words to say how grateful im with their help to control the cats at my backyard.
Great people. Better cats. Welcoming environment. Please consider adopting from here
Amazing shelter , all the staff care so much for all the cats in their care . Just by walking in you can see how well loved all the cats are . Will forever volunteer here .
A great loving and caring shelter. Happy I adopted my sweet kitty here !!
Full disclosure, I am a volunteer here!! But, if you want some doggie / kitty time, go on down, theyre all adorable & well taken care of.
Incredible shelter! Every employee is extremely informative and sweet. Additionally, they are willing to go head over heels to find you your perfect match of a cat! 100% recommend this amazing facility!
They did not feel comfortable having us adopt from them because we asked a lot of questions about the kitten’s medical health. We are first-time cat owners, and I believe it’s understandable for us to be concerned about adopting a kitten who has a transmissible parasitic disease. The first cat we wanted to adopt from them they decided to play favorites and give it to their volunteers. Therefore, refused us, and recommended we adopt other cats. We liked one of their other cats, but apparently, he had worms and there was so much back and forth on his condition. Also, they diagnosed him with hookworm, and a few days later, it became a roundworm. Every time we ask questions about his health we get a snarky comment like “We should either find another cat” or “not adopt at all” so we felt uncomfortable and rescinded the adoption process for this cat. And asked them if they would consider us for yet another kitten I liked. I got a vague response that all kittens are in medical treatment and they don’t feel comfortable having us adopt from them anymore. After refusing us our initial kitten. Before their last response to me, I like to state that they recommended to us if we did not feel comfortable with the second kitten due to having worms, we could always adopt other cats from their facility. That is no longer the case as of their response today (I got email receipts). And why? Because “we ask a lot of questions about the kitten’s health.” Professionalism and patience especially with their first-time adopters is nonexistent. I also saw they are combative on here with the ones that leave them negative comments instead of responding professionally. They sound like a defensive ten-year-old. Regardless, I would not recommend this place. I guess we were trying dead with their bullsh*t because of the adorable kittens they had. But everything is on their terms, and no leeway for their customers. Don’t go there! Ridiculous and a waste of time. Now I am bracing myself for a defensive reply.
What a great place that helps care for and place so many kittens! Wonderful, caring people!
Excellent experience, staff is friendly and extremely great with the animals. Very, very satisfied..
The volunteers and all associated with this shelter are absolutely amazing!
You can really tell that everyone here truly cares about the animals!
