Last Hope does wonderful things and is the shelter we recommend. The beagle formerly known as Bailey, now Betty, is our recent adoption.
Ive adopted 3 pets from last hope and am so pleased, Ive now decided to volunteer with them. The animals are so loved and taken care of for while in our care. They take care of the initial spay/neuter, vaccines and any deworming (if necessary). They make sure to socialize them appropriately and with time and patience so theyre able to be adopted. Cannot say enough good things about this organization and the wonderful work they do.
We waited for 4 hours to play with the cat. We found a cat we really loved and they said they would call to say if we got accepted or denied. Never received the call and you cant even call them to check on the status of the application. We drove an hour to get out there. We got our hopes up for no reason. Ill have to look elsewhere for a cat.Update: We went two weeks ago and they never called, never checked references, they just ghosted us after we put in the paperwork. We ended up adopting a lovely cat from Animal Care Centers of New York. I suggest you dont waste your time here.
Best animal rescue on Li. Very hospitable and very thorough with helping people find the right match and giving advice. They are super welcoming, but usually busy taking care of pets. Definitely stop here, especially if you are looking for a cat. Adopted my kitten there the other day. He is all set and he is chipped!!!
A wonderful place to find a new furry friend! My family adopted a puggle from here several years ago and shes been amazing. There are so many great dogs and cats here, and the staff is so friendly and helpful!
Excellent rescue that brings up a lot of dogs from the south( and some local) . They have two rooms you can meet the dogs in. They listened to what we were looking and made a good suggestion for a one year old great with kids & adults. When we picked him up they even had a goody bag for him. It’s been almost a year now and I am glad we adopted our rescue dog from here.
I had a very disappointing experience. I would never go there again or encourage anyone to adopt from there. I adopted a cat and I was misinformed. I was told the cat interacts well with other cats. I already have a sweet natured cat who was grieving the loss of his companion for 10 years. I wanted to provide him another companion. I did all I could but the cat I got from Last Hope caused injury to my cat and I couldn’t have that. I brought the adopted cat back. I was given the third degree! I just got raffle tickets from them to buy. I didn’t ask for my adoption fee to be refunded. They can use it for the animals. I inquired about the cat I brought back a couple of times with no response. I told them he’s a nice cat but he has to be the only pet in the house. The only good thing about it is it’s a no kill shelter.
Amazing would be an understatement when describing Last Hope. A few weeks back, we adopted an 8-month-old Brussels Griffon. He looked like an Ewok, so we named him Chewbacca. He is the best little dog. The staff at Last Hope went above and beyond anything I could have imagined. In short, they exceeded my expectations. They are generous, kind, respectful, and above all, they treat the animals like their own. These animals are healthy, clean and the entire facility is immaculate. My dog was chipped, and fully vaccinated. They even had him neutered. They even supplied me with toys, a cage, food, and medicine. Denise, the woman I interacted with throughout the process, is nothing short of an angel. The initial cage they gave me was a bit small, so she came to my house to drop off a larger one. Who does this? If you are in the process of looking for a dog or cat, please, I beg you, DO NOT go to a pet store. There is no need to pay thousands of dollars, when you can adopt a fantastic animal from a rescue shelter. And if you are anywhere near Last Hope Rescue in Wantagh, NY, make this place your first stop. Trust me, you wont need to go anywhere else.
Had a great experience, went in to look for a cat with my son and there we saw the perfect cat for our home. The process was quick Megan was very helpful in introducing the cat to me and my son great place to adopt.
Great staff to work with. Rescue facility for felines and canines . Human caregiver background checks done , pet medical records fully detailed , pet chips done . Pet starter needs given at adoption and other items you may want/need .Easily traveled to from Southern State Parkway , Long Island , NY exit 27south .
I had such a lovely experience with Last Hope. I adopted an adult cat, Owen this weekend. The staff was so supportive, educated and helpful throughout the process. I called their line before officially meeting Owen and the women I spoke with encouraged me to put in an application as she saw him as a perfect fit. When I got to Last Hope to finally meet him after being approved, he was out of his cage, bag packed and ready to go home. A crowd of staff said their farewells & best wishes as we left. I 100% recommend stopping by here if one of their animals might be a fit for you, they were all so caring and great to work with.
It was our first time visiting this location as my mom was looking to adopt a kitten. Before this, we visited a handful of other adoption agencies both public and private ones; Last Hope was by far the most organized and has the most caring and knowledgeable staff. We were learned so much about the cats that they take in and what goes into caring for them. We ended up filling out an application for adoption at the end! We also reached out with the interest to volunteer! I strongly recommend this place for your adoption.
Adopted a beagle mix puppy from Last Hope and had such a great experience from start to finish. The home visit was conducted quickly and we were able to pick up our little guy two days after. The volunteers are friendly, helpful and accommodating. SO happy we found this shelter and rescued our little guy - we are in love! Definitely check out this shelter if you are looking to adopt a cat or dog!
I had such a great experience adopting my first kitten from Last Hope. From the second I walked in I was greeted by a team of volunteers so eager to find me the perfect pet. They showed me several different kittens and then sat with me for a half hour while I played with one of them. Only 48 hours later my new friend was finally home! Susan helped me with the application process, answered all my cat care questions, really cared about the well being of the cat once I took her home, made sure I knew what was best for the cat. Eleanor delivered the cat to my apartment and sat with me on the floor while the cat explored my room and played with her new toys. Everyone along the way answered all my questions - This is my first pet so I had a ton. You can really tell that these people are invested in the happiness of these animals. Thank you for all that you do!
Amazing place with wonderfully friendly volunteers running the entire scene. Volunteers meaning people who actually want to be there is very important in this case! They did a more thorough check on my references than my own job did! You can absolutely tell everybody loves what they do and all of the animals they spend their time with. The little tuxedo kitty I got is an absolute blessing.
My boyfriend and I stopped there yesterday to look for a dog. The first response from the woman at the front desk was that because of our age, 19, we wouldn’t even be able to submit an application without a parent and asked if we still lived with our parents. We understand that they want the dogs to go to good homes and responsible people but the way we were spoken to was not professional at all..we decided to go elsewhere to find our fur baby.
Long story short, my daughter found a beautiful friendly cat in the street. She was freezing, skinny as a stick and vomiting. She had no chip. All the well known animal rescue centers told us to put her back in the street where we found her. Last hope was the only truly humane rescue center who showed concern for this cat. Doreen and her staff are tops in my book. So appropriately named - they really were this cats last hope
My friend was approved to adopt the sweetest little cat, and then out of no where, AFTER the institution had CLOSED someone who was never involved with the adoption case called and completed pulled the rug out from under my friend. The amount of hoops my friends have gone through to give this cat a loving forever home when they did everything that was asked of them, just to be called by a completely random person was incredibly disheartening. Would not recommend adopting from this agency at all, the questions and requirements needed are incredibly invasive and make adopting incredibly difficult and almost impossible. Please look at other agencies who want to ensure forever homes without the invasive behavior this agency has!
How can you not love a place run by volunteers whos mission it to bring loving pets into your familys home?My non-bias response...We adopted two kittens. The adoption process is relaxed and low pressure. There is a small room where you can spend time getting acclimated to, and decide on, which cat(s) best fit your familys personality. They dropped our cats off in Bellport with a small goodie bag.It was a great experience.
I adopted two sister cats from PetSmart Huntington and they made me very happy
I adopted my cat from them 12 years ago. They did thorough checks. I love the adoption stories they share on their Facebook page
The same day i applied in both: animal shelter and last hope animal resque. The very next day shelter called me letting me know that im approved, but last hope just sent me a text message that i was not approved. After i asked why, they said they dont know. I called my vet and they never called them to check me. Never called the references as well. They wont answear the phone, and wont call me back. My vet literally told me thats a Bs, and they would rather hold cats in cages than place them in loving house. While i was there i took my special needs son couse he was very excited about getting a new cat. Sadly im pretty sure he is the reason why they never processed my application. We own a big house, and already have one cat and a dog in excellent health.Last hope discriminated us and treated us like some kind of criminals not worthy of a cat.Resques like that are the reason why people shop for pets instead of adopting them.
Thank you so much Last Hope for making me fall in love all over again. I just got my baby kitten from Last Hope last week. I loved all the kittens and cats and it was tough to choose from any single one of them. I wanted to take all of them home with me. They are all well-fed and so clean and happy. I just finished my adoption here and I cannot recommend them enough. From the moment my husband and I walked in the door inquiring about adoption, the staff that welcomed us and took us on a tour were so kind. The adoption process went smoothly and all my kitten’s shots were up to date which I’m thankful for. Thanks so much Last Hope and the amazing staff here. I can’t recommend them enough and I look forward to adopting again from them in the future.
My dad went here to adopt a dog. He lives alone since my mom died and loves when I bring my little dog over for a visit so he wanted to get a small dog of his own. He filled out the application (which they approved) and looked at a dog. It was love at first sight for both of them, he knew right away that was the dog for him. They told him they would have to schedule a house inspection... not a problem. He was extremely excited, bought the dog a bed, food, toys, a harness, etc. Then he receives a call that he cannot adopt a dog BECAUSE HE IS TOO OLD!! Are you kidding me?!?! Did you not realize that when you approved his application?!? Now he is heart-broken. How can these people be so uncaring? I do not recommend anyone go here... if they dont care about the people that come in, I cant imagine they care anything about the pets. Steer clear!
I went to Last Hope on a Saturday 3/4 at around 6pm. The woman who greated us were extremely pleasant and very professional. They ask what I was looking for and took us for a tour of their doggies up for adoption. Explain that they Rescue dogs from Georgia, Puerto Rico and I believe North Carolina 🤔 they have all big, medium and small dogs. Even puppies and a cat section. They Explain as much as possible on each dog you might be interested in adopting. They then place a dog you might be interested in adopting in a room to interact. You can fill out an application right on the spot and they review it and will get back to you in 1 or 2 weeks. The process is fairly simple. I felt very welcomed and they had a bunch of beautiful doggies up for adoption. I would definitely recommend this place.
Best experience adopting a cat. They were so kind and professional. Had us get 3 recommendedations and give them a tour of our home for the future cat. They let us play with him for a whole hour before committing to adopt and gave us time to get our house prepped. I would recommended this place to anyone wanting to adopt a cat or dog They give people a chance and make sure to give our furry friends the best home. Also they dont lie about the pets personalities theyre honest and hard working.
My boyfriend and I just adopted a kitten from them to go along with my older cat who was lonely since her sister departed and they were very nice. Lauren even answered the phone for us on the fourth of July which I wasnt expecting. They were very quick with the adoption process and now I have my little May and she is a delightful girl. She was actually on display at a petco but I adopted her after seeing her picture online and sent in an application to adopt her. I had a very pleasant and good experience with this animal rescue and I couldnt be any happier with my choices.
I adopted my dog 2 years ago from here. I didn’t know about them beforehand. I actually went to north shore first and that was not a good experience, so my husband found a nearby animal shelter and we stopped by to look. The place is great. The staff is friendly and you can tell they care so much about the animals. There’s a room where you can meet and play with the animal. There’s also a gated playground for dogs. We were able to go to the room and outside at the playground to get a feel for our dog now. I think a lot of the dogs come from Kentucky and a lot of them are some sort of hound mix. I cannot day enough good things about the shelter. I would recommend last hope to everyone! They really are nice people who care about these animals. I can’t wait to be able to volunteer my time here when I’m more available.
I really cant say enough about how wonderful my experience was at Last Hope. I stopped in with my two sons to look at cats. The volunteers were so friendly and helpful. They knew so much about each cats personality and were able to steer us toward a kitten that would be friendly and playful. They have a small room where people can play with and get to know the cats in order to make the right selection. We instantly bonded with the sweetest black and white kitten and knew he was the one! We went forward with submitting an application and three references. The following night, our new kitten was delivered to our home and my boys were over the moon. Last Hope believes that cats are best living in an indoor environment and will not adopt to someone planning for an indoor/outdoor situation. I see that some people were very critical of this fact in their reviews. I think Last Hope is simply being very selective so that every animal goes to a safe home environment and will not be at risk of being hit by a car or harmed by other outside animals. I do think this policy was made with only the best of intentions. I absolutely recommend Last Hope if you are looking to find your new fur baby!
Last week we adopted a female lab/husky mix puppy from Last Hope. Everyone we met there was great. We absolutely love our new puppy. She is everything we wanted and more. She is so smart. She is already getting the hang of going outside to do her business. And she is so sweet. She always wants to be near you (usually leaning up against you). Thank you Last Hope for bringing us such joy!
Some lady named Jane was so downright condescending to my aunt and then myself. She just kept asking personal questions that had nothing to do with wanting to adopt an animal!! She was an angry person. Shame because everyone else there was wonderful.
I saw them on News 12 and promptly scheduled two different tours they had the first was a walking tour of their rescue farm. Sherry was so nice over the phone. My 4 year old loves farms and he loves this interactive tour. He fed carrots to the horses and feed to the goats. He was in heaven and the attendants were all very nice too. My second tour scheduled is this weekend due to the weather I postponed that one twice... it’s a driving tour to see the horses. :)
I love this place. They take such good care of all the animals in their care. I got my cat 17 years ago. I visited recently as I found a newborn kitten I couldnt keep. They took her in and nursed her and found a good home for her. I visited her until she moved into her new home. Highly recommend any one looking to adopt a dog or cat to go to Last Hope. The animals are treated like the staffs family. Much love and care goes around.
Love love love my adopted fur baby from Last Hope. Staff was great with helping me decide which cat to choose and also assisting with my pet interactions. Animals are well cared for and staff is caring. Please support them...and take home a new furry friend ! I wish I could have taken 2 home !
The animals are treated so nicely, like family like they should be. The staff are so friendly and helpful, I am looking forward to taking home a new member of the family soon! My old girl just passed away a few weeks ago 😓, and the house has been empty. Anyway, the staff are actively engaged with all the animals and take very good care of them and its very clean. I am very impressed.
Went to donate some bedding & toys for the pets at Last Hope. It was perfect timing getting to watch the wonderful crew at Last Hope bring in some happy new little pups that they rescued. The dogs were curious, happy and wagging their little tails as they entered their new temporary home at Last Hope. I hope they all find their loving & caring forever home real soon !
We saw a rescue pup and hoped it would be able to come home with us . The new forever home became a family that saw it prior to us . We wish the pup many happy years with its new family .The staff at L.H.I. really are a great group of folks doing a wonderful service for rescue pets . Background checks are done for all potential forever families . They provide starter meals , collars or harnesses , leashes (as needed) and guidance for the human families that go there . All of their charges are checked by vets before adoption .
Last Hope was clean, the staff were friendly and patient, and we came home with a best friend in no time. Happy experience overall.
I had worked with another rescue organization to find a match for a senior dog to retire under my care. After a doctor’s appointment one day I found myself in the vicinity of Last Hope with an hour to spare before starting to work.Best spare hour I have spent in a long time. Not just because I met my match but because of the staff! From the first volunteer to introduce me to Rambo to EVERY volunteer that processed my application.I am in awe.Without mentioning you all by name Rambo and I want to thank you all for your care, concern, diligence, attentiveness, patience, humor and generosity. You know who you are.Anette
Staff most certainly is friendly, but the process by which they decide who gets to adopt a pet is arbitrary at best. As they kept informing my family its not about you, its about the dog, which I 100% agree with. But when you have 30+ years experience with larger dogs, have a large fenced in yard and a home with ample room, and more than enough means to support it, yet cant even get a call back theres an issue. Thankfully North Shore Animal Shelter who knows my family from previous adoptions in the past welcomed us and we got our new family member on the spot. While i can respect being cautious, outright denying dogs homes to qualified candidates is wrong.
I was looking to adopt a kitten and decided to go to last hope. From the second I went there, I knew it was a mistake. I spoke to several different people whom most of were rude and each one had informed me different information when it came to filling out application/adopting an animal. I was originally told to fill out an application and come in the next day with anyone over 25 since i’m only 21 years old. So I came in with my aunt the next day. They let me play with the cat and everything. last minute they inform me a parent actually needs to fill out the application/ consent. I told them my mother and I will come in the next day. Complete waste of me and my aunts time. Later on that night, I get a phone call from the shelter from someone extremely rude, asking me extremely inappropriate, invasive questions about my family life as i’m 21 years old. i ask them to please speak to my mother but they went on with basically denying me the kitten even before they met with my mother the next day. My mother went in the next day herself explaining everything and they didn’t even have the decency to give us a phone call back afterwords. There’s no doubt in my mind this facility jerked me around because i’m just a young girl and have other cats. however i couldn’t be more glad that I didn’t support this so called “organization”. The two ladies who really ruined this experience for me names are Jane and Mary. No hard feelings! I got a new kitten from a different shelter and he has a great loving home!
Terrible customer service. You go there, see a pet you like. They promise they will call you if you get accepted or not. Let a little girl pet the cat. We filled an application. They didnt even call the references. Didnt inform of yes or no decision. Dont recommend unless you fit into their ideal profile. Left them messages, called them and no response during the waiting period. Unbelievable.
Good thing they volunteer because they have 0 conception of “customer service”Therefore i wouldnt trust bringing any animal there. I had left a message and called numerous times for them to call me back to let me know i was rude for leaving a stern message after no one returning my call. Just wanted to find a home for my Kittens. After apologizing for understanding they are volunteer/ busy she still continued on being rude & nasty on the phone. So i rejected on them even considering my kittens.“Customer service” at its LOWEST.
Just adopted the most beautiful and sweetest cat. Staff was phenomenal
This is the best shelter Ive ever encountered. I adopted a special needs cat and this shelter TRULY cares about each and every animal there. The adoption process was super fast. I put in my adoption application and within 36 hours they called all my references (2 personal references, landlord and vet) to make sure Id be a good home (which is important for the safety and well being of the animals even if it seems extensive), they did a virtual home check (due to covid, normally they do an in person home check), and then I scheduled my appointment to pick up my new family member!! They were SO kind and accommodating. I dont drive so I took the LIRR and when I arrived a volunteer told me they would have driven me from the train if they knew. They gave me tons of time to meet my new friend and they explained everything Id need to know in detail. They sent me home with 4 BAGS OF STUFF FOR HIM!! Including 3 beds, yoga mats, food dishes, TONS of toys, food, even a litter box AND litter! I even had a group of volunteers line up to say goodbye to my kitty because they were going to miss him and they were SO happy to see him get adopted. They all walked me to my uber and helped me load up the car and waved goodbye as we drove off. It was SUCH a pleasant and loving experience. They followed up a few days later to see how he was doing and Ive sent a few updates since then and they are so happy to hear from me every time. Kitty came with a microchip, updated vet visit, clean bill of health and a neuter. If youre looking for genuinely good people who truly love animals then this is the place for you. You will not be disappointed!!!Thank you Last Hope for rescuing my little Bamboozle from that high kill shelter. Thank you for taking such good care of him until we could meet. Thank you for making this adoption one I will remember forever!! I will be back as soon as I can convince hubby to expand the family once more lol
Great rescue organization. Very caring.
Havent visited here in a number of years, but stipped by to add to our kitty family. Staff was super nice and let us play with a bunch of kittens...two of which are coming home with us!
These are the real ones. Ive been able to help and get help trapping, fixing and placing our Long Island fur babies. Please support them anyway possible. Thanks guys :)
I loved my experience with Last Hope! My husband and I ended up rescuing a pup from another shelter, but everyone was so warm and the dogs looked very well cared for. I would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a furever friend to contact the people at Last Hope.
I agree they love their animals, and want them to find the best home possible. But I went there 2 weeks ago to adopt a cat, and I have called and called, I couldnt even leave a message because their voicemail box is full, and I even went as far as to email them to get back to me. I still havent heard from them, filled out a 2 page long form, and I havent heard a single word from them. How can they possibly find these cats homes if they dont get back to the people who want to adopt them?
I have to say that I’m very disappointed in Last Hope. My family and I came with good intentions about adopting a dog and who needs a good home. I came in with my adult family and was treated very poorly. My brother-in-law is in a wheelchair only for long walks and was told that our application would not be accepted because of “his disabilities “. When I stated that is discrimination, they stated” we don’t care… we can refuse whoever we want”. I feel terrible to even have to write this because of the hurtful and unprofessional way they told my family that “we’re not to come back”. I also feel terrible that this organization has done wonderful work in the past but these few “bad apples” forced me to give this review. If you are disabled, do not come here for they feel that you can’t and shouldn’t have a dog. We saw everyone else who was able bodied get spoken to with curtesy and respect. Very sad.
Great people doing wonderful things! Lots of parking, nice enclosed area for kitties away from dogs. Please dont shop, always adopt! Lots of sweet fur babies to choose from and they are all spayed/neutered, all shots too. Please consider saving one of them.
When you’ve tried all those town shelters and have had those bad experiences and communication issues. Come to a place that the love is contagious. A place that wears there heart on their sleeve. A place filled w volunteers young and old and charities that come in to take care of the animals that assist the mentally disabled w mutually beneficial pet therapy. This is the type of place you want to adopt from. As I know I did for both my Cat Romeo and soon my Dog Peaches too. And when you leave, pls become a member of their organization as their donations go straight towards their pet needs. Together we can make a difference.
We adopted a beautiful green-eyed black kitten....named Angel...Last Hope does not release a pet till neutered/spayed, all shots distemper, rabies, etc. and medical showing negative for alll diseases such as lleukemia, FIV, etc. ...and a general info home check. He was a little shy at first but has blossomed into a wonderful, gentle, funny, funny cat with an awesome personality and sweet nature..we lucked out...hes now almost 2 years old.I worked with Jen, out of Bellmore Petco. She is both knowledgeable and sweet. Ive owned cats all my life and I know the drill. They do charge a nominal fee, which I was happy to pay for getting a 100% healthy animal...neutered and all shots for his age.I know my review is lengthy but I feel I cant say enough about Last Hope..especially because Ive had recent contact with another rescue group - Heart and Soul - and I am in the midst of a very bad experience with them. My 9yr old son saw a kitten in another Petco so we filled out app...I never heard from them and thought kitten was already gone but finally, I heard from Laura, and we spoke at length. I was waiting for landlord check (which was my mom)...who even called Laura to confirm having a 2nd cat was fine. On the eve of the potential adoption, she called me about another family wanting him before I was able to take him, so I told her, I would be willing to step aside and let them have him, as I feel each pet has a certain destiny with the family they get. I certainly wanted to still take him if it didnt work out. This woman Laura left me a rather nasty message the next day about how I should have let her know I no longer this wanted this kitten and how he has missed getting into 2 homes...?????....and when I responded to her trying to explain the apparent mis-communication, she is now ignoring me. I left voicemail and text and theres been crickets from her end. My 9 year old is going to be very disappointed, as am I. Last Hope is the way to go, in my opinion.
Staff is helpful. Woman at front desk informed me they were closing soon which they said is 5pm. On theyre website says 7pm which I would have waited had I known. Then on my way out she said were closed what do you want Ill give you 2 minutes of my time remove the witch and youll had a stellar establishment. Extremely unprofessional for a place depending on people to adopt their homeless pets. Otherwise clean.
5 stars is not nearly enough for this wonderful adoption house that gives dogs and cats New lease on life! After two disappointing experiences at other places this truly was my last hope to adopt a family dog, the entire staff from the get-go were so friendly and helpful while also guiding me, I cant say enough about the boss Letty and also Phyllis who did the transaction with Nelson or Rocky as I am now call him! I was looking for a beagle but this lil guy stole my heart with his eyes and the fact that he is half beagle mixed with black lab is an amazing combo I think!a beagador if u will! I love the fact that they did all the vaccinations, shots, microchip etc..and also taught him good behavior as he has already demonstrated in my home today by going to the bathroom outside, playing gentle with my kids and listening to orders,on top of all this I got a bag of goodies including food, snacks, toys, even a sweater! I highly recommend last hope for your dog/cat cat adoption needs and wants! They have been in business for a long long time and I can see why!
My review is about the service we received, not the treatment of the animals - we never got that far. We went there last night to view dogs in hopes of finding a new family member. When we arrived there was no one there to greet us or give us direction so we simply followed the writing on the wall that lead us to the dogs. The door was open and an older woman with glasses was standing in between the entry. I asked if we just walked in and she No! (starring at me up and down, also starred at my sons shirt, clearly uncomfortable moment). She continues and asked “what are you looking for?” I said we would like to adopt a dog. She pointed at my husband and my son and said “how old are they!” I said well that’s my husband and my son is 13 (who by the way is taller then me and a solid 170). She said “he can’t come in you have to be 18!” I said oh ok well is there any way we can see the dogs? She said yes and proceeded to walk us over to a window with photos of a couple of dogs. My son has vocal tourrets that pretty much activate when he’s anxious and I could hear him trying his hardest to hide his tics because I know he was upset; it was pretty heartbreaking for us cause he was super excited and we knew that we could give a dog in a kennel a great home and companionship. Even though we look young and our appearance to her was clearly profiled - we are both professionals, financially established, we own our own home with a large gated yard. I have also been a previous pet owner (which I told her) and my last dog of almost 15 years I adopted from the Wantagh animal shelter; he came to us full of fleas and immaciated but we gave him the best possible life until his final days. I was clearly disappointed not only for my family and a pretty sad car ride home but for a dog in a shelter that could have had a new forever home and also opening the space in the shelter to another dog that could have had the same opportunity. Luckily, Long Island has many shelters and I’ve also connected with some groups on Social that were very welcoming and expecting our arrival today. Hopefully, we’ll have better luck finding our new best friend.
Hi, I am Lily and I am ten years old, me and my mom went to last hope yesterday and tried to adopt a kitten named Sprit. We fell in love with him and we could tell he loved us. The next day we got a call asking about a different cat that we adopted a few years ago. We were asked if he was an indoor cat and we said he is a indoor, outdoor cat. They denied us because the cats they have can’t go outdoors because they may not come back. They could have just told us that but no they had to deny us for it even tho we didn’t get the other cat from them. They thought we would let him out anyway. We were very upset, so now we have no furry friend for thanksgiving and Christmas Thanks a lot last hope.
Everyone was very warm and friendly and loving to the dogs. We bring our new pup home today. Thank you
I have a good and loving home. Lost my 19 year old last year and have a 2 year old, in/out door. so I should be able to provide a better place for a kitten than sitting for 2 long. months in a cage at Petco. Very disappointing, totaly let me down.Susan said dont worry he will be adopted so how come he is still there?
The shelter itself is very nice and the people there clearly care for the animals in their charge. However, the adoption process was marred by poor intracompany communication, causing several misunderstandings about the process and what was necessary for the adoption to be completed. It was not a malicious or hostile encounter at all, but the level of disorganization was disconcerting at best.
MAKE SURE you tell them when adopting you wont let the CAT OUTSIDE. they will deny your application. also dont let them know you have old people living at the house. they are scared that they will scratch them and they wont stop bleeding. they will also check all your referencesi was sadly denied because I said I might let the CAT outside. since I let my last cat out with any problems. if I had known these cats arent supposed to be let outside I wouldnt let them. instead they crushed me after I had gotten attached to a cat. they should of just told me not to let the CAT out. I told them I wouldnt and they said they doubt that because its what I did with my last cat
While I completely understand that the animals are the main priority, without people skills, it seems rather challenging to get the animals adopted. Without making this review long winded, I will simply say that there are specific volunteers and board members who are extremely rude and belittling. The way that I was spoken down to by more than one person here yesterday was absolutely appalling and despite an apology, I won’t be back.
Got to pet the cats all the cats were very friendly
They will not return my dog after he got out and was returned to last hope because it was on one of his tags. Now they said, we are keeping him, read your contract I WILL ADMIT, he is an escape artist and had been returned twice for that same reason, too needy. But we gave him love and affection and looked past the damage he did in our home. I know he loves us as we do him and wants to come home, but according to Letti , he was never my dog. Im out 1000s in damage and now the dog too. They wont get away with I t. Make sure you dont sign anything if you adopt from them. They will steal your dog if he ever gets out.
Emailed asking for info about adoption. Would think that they would want the cat(s) to go to a good home. Never heard back. Only 1 star so I can give a rating. They want to get the animals adopted but never responded. Poorly run. Went to another shelter. Lost out on a good home. Thanks for nothing.
The site has a limited amount of the Dog description Im looking to adopt, however, its still an animal Shelter that is helping animals (Dogs and Cats) find homes. For that alone, they get 10 STARS!!God Bless You For Your Hearts and What Your Doing To Help these Innocent Animals..
Last Hope was the most helpful and professional animal adoption center I visited on Long Island (and I visited A LOT during my search for a cat companion). After a very poor experience with Ruff House Rescue (10/10 do not recommend), I later went back to look at some cats at Last Hope. Something very helpful about Last Hope is the big room they use specifically for showing cats, which is filled with toys so you can really see their personality. Something not all the rescues/shelters I visited had.Eileen primarily helped with my adoption and she was very good at showing me cats that would fit my needs. Eileen knew their cats personalitys inside and out and she (along with other volunteers) takes the time to work with cats before they are adopted. I told Eileen I was looking for a mushy cat that would sit with me, liked to be pet, and would let me pick it up. I went on a Saturday and Eileen told me they had just gotten a handful of very friendly cats. I met with 2. One was a 7 month old tabby and the other a 1 year old grey tabby.I spent time petting and playing with both cats, but decided that I would come back the next day right when they opened and make my choice. I came back the next day and decided on the grey tabby because it was a little bit older and set in his personality. (He also loves to be pet and cuddled!!) I was already approved which meant I was able to have Eileen drop him off to me that same night!Eileen came to my apartment and brought his bed, his blanket, toys, and some food. She helped me get settled in with him and made sure we were both comfortable and answered/went over the paper work with me before she left. Its so nice this shelter brings you supplies for your cat and items that help make your cat more comfortable in their new furever home. With these items especially, their adoption fee is more than reasonable. He spent a little time periodically hiding under my bed, but would come out when you talked to him. That same night my brother and his wife came over to meet my new cat and even with more people around he still came out from his hiding to enjoy some pets and attention. My cats name is now Mochi and he has been with me for a couple weeks now. He stopped hiding under my bed two days after coming home and now follows me around everywhere I go in my apartment. He recently has discovered he can sit on the window sill and watch whats going on outside. If you are looking for a shelter who is going to take the time to find out what YOU need in a companion, I encourage you to go visit Last Hope in Wantagh. Eileen matched me with the purrfect cat and I am confident one of the volunteers will help you find the purrfect fur baby too! And if youre not a cat person, they also have some very cute dogs and I had a short conversation with the receptionist on that side of the shelter and she was also very polite!Thank you Last Hope and Eileen for all your help! When I am able to adopt another cat in a couple years I will certainly be back!
A shelter that genuinely cares for the animals, they accept cash donations, as well as food and other items for the animals. If you get a chance to stop in, the people are lovely.
Me and my girl were looking for dogs for adoption, great staff, she showed us which dogs we can adopt, but the process itself is ridiculous, after we filled up the application, when we arrived home, we recieved a call and they stated that we have to be 26 to adopt.
I Love My “Lehman”, now “Tommy “I’ve had him since 2005. He’s a wonderfully Cuddley Cat. Great Personality; great people at the Center. Very Satisfied.
I adopted 2 Russian Blue (mixed) sisters, Shannon and.Sierra, best decision ever. Last Hope gave me more snuggles and laughter then I could have imagined. Thank you for all you do. I’d be lost without my girls ❤️😺
I went to this place because my cat gave birth to 4 kittens and I didn’t want them so I went to the place since it had great reviews so they can take them in and they said that I went to late and on the website it says it closes at 7 but I went at 5 so I decided to come another day and I went today at 11 in the morning and they kept arguing and being rude and they were mad and didn’t do there job correctly they told me that the cats were to big but the kittens are only 2 months old and denied to take in the kittens when it’s supposed to be a place to receive animals and didn’t they were being unprofessional I don’t recommend to go to this place if you’re thinking about putting your cat or dog for adoption here .
This is a wonderful place dedicated to the well being of all the cats and dogs in their care. Volunteers are truly heaven sent!God bless them and all the animals they care for.❤️
Such a wonderful group of caring individuals. Great selection of dogs and cats who need a loving home.
Loved our trip there ...Hope we get selected for the pup we went to go see..(PS : its Sonny)
Was looking for my nieces cat back in October and despite my pushing, the lady was extremely polite and very helpful! And remained very professional. Thank you for giving me a little leeway.
Last Hope is a terrific, established volunteer run rescue organization helping homeless cats and dogs find loving homes, and assisting the public with vaccines and spay/neuter.
Hectic. Not very clean. Extremely opinionated and bias. I have witnessed many examples where very caring capable people have been turned away from adopting because they dont fit a certain mold.
When I got there they proceed to show me all the small dogs they have but failed to tell me they all have been adoptedTotal waste of time. The staff knows very little about the dogs that have
Very clean. Friendly staff. I think I met my new dog today.
Drove all the way there today to find out that they are CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC until further notice! I wish they posted this on there website more clearly and the dogs that they have pictured for adoption have already been adopted its very hard to search for a dog on there website!
They are all in very comfort environment
These people make you feel like youre incapable of taking care of a dog. Such a disappointing experience. Dont go here - there are much better places to adopt.
Great helpful sensitive organization dedicated to helping all types of dogs and cats.People who give their time are compassionate lovers and truly want to make a difference in the lives of these animals.
I recently adopted my lil puppy girl from Last Hope. Highly recommend this place. They really care about these animals.
Got my first dog rainbow there when it was bid-a-we got her at6weeks old she had worms and they dewormed her and said she might not make it she was with me for over 15 years
Everyone at Last Hope rescue is amazing. Letty is my hero. Letty found my new bestfriend. Mama is amazing and adorable .
They were helpful with suggestions for cheapest way to spay cats I took it months ago!;;
I got my Blue from Last Hope. I donate to them through out the year. Highly recommend adopting from Last Hope!
Wonderful facility, with caring staff. We got a new addition to our fur family and couldnt be happier.
Very long wait exactly 1 hour from check in and prices seem to have gone way up as it was 750 for both my dogs compared to last year that was less than half but other than that they are very friendly
One of the best adoption agencys on Long Island! Animals are very well taken care of, and the staff is delightful!
Great dogs, caring staff who wants the best for you and the dog.
They are always helpful with any problem. Ive adopted 2 cats from them they are the best.
The volunteers here are so nice. They really care about the animals and try to match them with loving homes.

This is where I adopted my best friend. Clean, helpful staff. Adoption process was easy! Adopt don’t shop!!
I would like to know if you pay to adopt a cat or are they free?
Great rescue organization. Caring staff...Im very happy with my adopted dog.
My mom found her kitty here and it was such a seamless process. The volunteers here really were so so patient with my mom and I with finding the purrrrfect fit for her home.Note: they do not answer the phone, dont try callingIf youre driving there in the night time be prepared to be confused about how to get it, it is very poorly lit outside and the GPS doesnt have the exact right location
The website could be a bit more informative but I got a return call very quickly from someone genuinely looking to help when I left a message.
Great small adoption shelter. Friendly staff, nice variety of dogs/cats for adoption!
I take clean towels, pillows, small rugs to shelter for those cuddly babies waiting for their new homes.
Very kind and caring staff clean facility they do amazing work
Excellent. Beautiful place for animals in need of attention. Costumer service A 1.
Such an amazing organization that puts animals first. I cannot say enough nice things about them.
Very nice volunteers, reasonable rates for vaccinations. Doctor was great.
The best. We got our senior girl Ruby from them. She was vetted completely which doesnt generally happen with lesser rescues. This rescue is very reputable and gives you the food and meds they are currently on. They give you a leash, New collar bowls, toys and treats as well. Thanks Last Hope.
SUPER CLEAN! Great Volunteers that give their time, energy and love to all the animals!
Very nice, caring people fortunately looking after those babies in need!
Dropped off towels and blankets for donations. Lots of cute cute dogs that need forever homes!
How can you not like a place where you can trap stray kittens and bring them there to get fixed so they can be released without multiplying these people get 👍👍and a pat on the back
We found our Blue!
The place is closed to the public, but a nice woman came out to answer some of my questions.
Always helpful. Love the ladies there. They always tried to help.
I adopted a wonderful dog from this wonderful rescue. Everyone was so helpful and nice. Im so happy with my new boy and the great people at Last Hope.
Friendly, helpful, caring staff.
What a wonderful organization!! The most best people I have ever met and the furbabies are all well taken care of.. ❤️
They do everything they can to help the animals! I love that about them.
Love this place! Great people, great dogs!
They truly love the animals here and work hard to get them adopted.
Animals are treated with love and the staff are kind and courteous
Deliberately left out vital information upon adoption
Friendly staff but filled out an application and never received a courtesy call on the animal of interest 😞
What a heartbreaking experience this was. My daughter and I went to this shelter to see if we could adopt a dog. I myself am an attorney who works part time and has a great house in a lovely part of Long Island with lots of parks. 16 years ago I adopted a dog from North Shore Animal League. She died two years ago and I was finally ready for another adoption. We went to this shelter since NSAL is under construction and have limited animals and staff to show them. When I walked in the volunteer was very professional. She greeted us, showed us all the dogs, and answered questions. We asked to see two dogs and spent some time with each. I settled on one amazing 5 year old male. The volunteer asked me to fill out an application. It asked for two personal references, a vet reference, and a home visit. I thought this was a bit over the top but no problem. The volunteer said we’d hear from them shortly. The next day the director of the shelter called back. First she stated I left off my application that I had a dog in the past. I don’t remember that part of the application but maybe I missed it. I was getting the impression that I was being interrogated as if I was some criminal looking to adopt a dog for nefarious reasons. She said she’d call my references and get back to me. (My references both contacted her with glowing statements on my ability to take care of a dog. I’ll assume our vet of 14 years did the same ) The next day she texts me a video of the dog interacting with a cat. He was playing and the cat was having none of it. The text said that he wasn’t good with cats. I saw the opposite. That cat was not good with him. I told her my cats were not like that and got along with my other dog. She then sent not one but two volunteers out for a home visit. They were fixated about the lack of a fully fenced yard. I explained to them that I would be taking the dog on walks. He wouldn’t be in the back yard but to relieve himself and I would be there the whole time. They left after that interrogation. The director texted me and said I was rejected because of no fence and two cats. It seems they would rather have the dogs to themselves living in cages and not have them in a loving home. They treat people who want to do the right thing and adopt a stray as if they were criminals. They truly are pushing people to puppy mills and breeders with this type of attitude. Don’t go to this shelter unless you want to have your heart broken.
Went to the reduce today n found the puppy we wanted after 3 visits, so after visiting with the puppy n answering the questions n filling out the application. One of the volunteers named Leti asked us about our fence n I responded it’s 4foot tall , she then responds he’s gonna jump that n I said I’ll accommodate any of the puppies needs, she then repeats herself ( very rudely) about him jumping the fence . Mind u that the lady said this puppy just came to the rescue an hour priori. How she knew so much about the puppy is beyond me after an hour?? I really don’t wanna support any puppy mills so I try to save an animal after losing my golden after 13 years ... I felt like I was being prejudged.. why was she so rude to me I didn’t say or do anything to agitate her ?? Just so discouraged... the whole experience was soured makes me just wanna just purchased instead of being humiliated.. thnx a lot Leti u just took a good home away from the puppy
I have cared for 24 cats for 10 years i asked these people for help with adoption and they couldnt be bothered now that i took care of that both myself and another animal lover tried to adopt a dog and Debbie immediately discriminated against our disabled children
