If you are a cat owner I highly recommend this place for care. If you call them they always respond promptly and get you an appointment as soon as possible. Both Drs. are extremely nice, professional and compassionate. The office is clean and no matter which Dr. your pet sees they are in great hands here.

Dr Penyy at the New Hyde Park location has gone above and beyond in providing support to help me care for two elderly cats with multiple health issues. She is attentive, compassionate and an expert in veterinary medicine. I highly recommend pet parents entrust the medical care of their felines to Dr Penyy and staff at the Cat Doctor.

Dr Penny saved my cats life twice. She is smart, meets your expectations, calm, knows her medicine, and cares about the animals. I wouldn’t go to anyone else but her. I can’t say enough great things about Dr penny. She is everything you want in someone taking care of a creature that means so much to you. Keep practicing the way you do Dr penny, it’s rare. I’ve been to many vets and she stands out as smart, quick to think, not trying to financially cripple you, and acts without panic even if the situation is stressful (my cat was in respiratory distress from asthma). Great great doctor

I don’t remember the last time I ever wrote a review of anything but I had such a terrible experience that I figured I should share my experience with other cat owners. I brought my cat in and he was seen by Dr. Lotus Altholtz who (30+ minutes after my scheduled appointment time) barely performed any physical exam whatsoever and then immediately tried sending me to an ophthalmologist for an eye infection. My cat has a chronic breathing disorder and she tried to send me to the emergency room despite me explaining this was a chronic issue. She then said I should take him to the emergency room regardless because of the eye infection (??). She then discovered a “heart murmur” and tried to send me to a cardiologist. On top of all this she was extremely rude and judgmental towards me for not agreeing with her unwarranted escalation of the severity of the situation (my cat is fine now and she was clearly overreacting in my medical opinion).I am a doctor (for humans) and i would never treat my patients like this. For someone calling themselves the “cat doctor” she seemed incapable of assessing the patient, forming a differential diagnosis +/- recommending tests to narrow it down, and then prescribing a treatment. She seemed to view herself as some kind of intermediary to send people to specialists as opposed to a clinician that diagnoses and treats. If you value your time and money as I do, I would highly recommend a different vet as I felt both were wasted here. I do not know about other vets at this practice but I would avoid Dr. Altholtz.

Everyone here is wonderful-- reception, techs, vets. We initially sought them out for dental care after our cat Nina started losing teeth left and right. Surgery was effective and affordable, and theyve been providing her with excellent care all around since then. They are kind and gentle with Nina and attentive to her health issues that need monitoring. Ive never felt pressured to pay for any unnecessary tests or procedures. Most importantly, Nina seems to trust them and is calmer in their care than shes been anywhere else, which makes it worth the hour-long drive.

I used to see Dr. Sochi. The staff was always very nice and I never had any issues until my cat’s last annual. About 6 weeks prior to her appointment I noticed a lump on my cat’s rear near the anal gland. I spoke with reception and asked if I could email a photo so Dr. Penyy (I believe Dr. Sochi had left the practice) could see if it was something emergent and if I should move the appointment up sooner. No reply for 2 weeks. I was finally able to get Dr. Penyy on the phone after several follow-up emails/calls and she looked at the photo while on the phone and said to me “well if it is a tumor, there is not much I can do now…I’ll see you at you scheduled appointment.” That was it. I had my records forwarded to another vet. Turned out to be a small fluid filled benign cyst, but a “tumor” was all Dr. Penyy mentioned over the phone. I will never see Dr. Penyy again.

She is God sent. I am so happy to have found her. I brought into my home an adorable feral cat almost 2 years ago. She started about six months ago pulling out her fur. I couldn’t figure out what was going on and it was extremely difficult to get her in a pet carrier but recently I was successful. Her diagnosis and treatment were spot on. She is comfortable now eating and not pulling out her hair. I cannot thank the staff and the doctor enough. They are caring, sensitive, and very easy to make an appointment. And I will recommend her to everyone.

The handling of this clearly established there us some type of scam they trying to pull or are very disorganized.

The staff are lovely, personable, professional, caring and always on point. Dr. Penyy, although obviously very busy, always takes the time to answer any and all questions and is very responsive by phone as well. She also is very caring, reassuring, professional, and informative. I finally found a Vet for my cat who I feel I can trust. Also, I dont agree with the reviews that say this office is overpriced - I have found them to be reasonable and also that they dont push unnecessary treatment or visits. They seem to me to be primarily motivated by caring for the pet and the pet owner. Thank you all at the Cat Doctor!

Last summer, my otherwise healthy sixteen-year-old Julie seemed more lethargic and began vomiting. When I took her to a local veterinary, he threw us out of his office because she “scratched” him. When I asked if he wanted to put her to sleep or sedate her, he told me that she was sixteen years old and didn’t see the point in doing so. I interpreted my cat’s defensive behavior as a sign that she was aging and that my job was to keep an eye on her but let her live her best life. Three months later, she stopped eating, became lethargic, which caused me to advocate for her with the harsh veterinary. To examine her, he took a huge chunk of fur from her neck at the site of the needle inserted to anesthetize her, so she came home immobilized and for a week, on antibiotics and thyroid medication. However, Julie rebounded. While sharing my concerns about Julie to total strangers in a Syosset pet food store, they strongly recommended that I bring Julie to Dr. Penyy. Despite the distance from my north shore home to New Hyde Park, their endorsement was compelling. Dr. Penyy’s office was and continued to be kind, professional and supportive. Dr. Penyy called me that day and assured me that there was no need to sedate Julie, but rather told me she would prefer to examine her “as she was” to find out how to best treat her. As with many cats, my feline diva was defensive during the visit, but Dr. Penyy comforted her as she drew blood and got a urine sample. She worked in tandem with her assistant while encouraging me to remain close by to comfort my cat. After each visit, I received a follow-up phone call from the staff to see how Julie was doing post-visit. Within days, Dr. Penyy called with the results of blood work with suggested treatment. I was shocked that Dr. Penyy called me on the eve of a significant holiday and remember telling her to get some “down time” for herself. As difficult as the last six months were, Dr. Penyy and I worked together to keep Julie as healthy and comfortable as possible despite her worsening kidney disease. A week and a half ago, she honored my decision to allow Julie to go peacefully to release her from her pain and suffering.Like many heartbroken owners, I agonized over the timing of my decision. Less than a week after euthanizing Julie, Dr. Penyy called me early in the morning on her first day back from a short hiatus and reassured me that I made the right decision. I can’t praise Dr. Penyy and her staff enough for their professionalism, care, and compassion shown toward Julie. Julie was a very special feline companion, so I am grateful that she had the best care a pet could have with Dr. Penyy.

This vet is absolutely fabulous: Positive, knowledgeable, professional and so sweet. She has helped my cat, Precious, through tooth and gum issues related to herpes, (acquired in a feral colony) with so much expertise and kindness! She will not suggest anything for the sole purpose of financial gain: It is all about the needs of the cat. Dr. Penny is very skilled and her confidence makes me feel like we can get through anything. I cant say enough wonderful things about the staff too: Christina, Shawn, Tim...all are fantastic, courteous and caring. They understand the unique needs of every cat and provide care based on these needs during visits and boarding. The facilities, lovely condos, are second to none. I would not bring my cat, Precious, anywhere else!

We discovered The Cat Doctor around a year ago, when one day the cat hospital in Queens that we went to for almost 40 years told us they were “too busy” to see our cat, Gracie, when she was ill, and advised us to go elsewhere. We were able to bring her in to see Dr. Penyy within an hour or so and from that day forward she, along with the staff, was always incredibly warm, caring, and professional. Dr. Penyy’s knowledge is stellar. Not only does she really “know her stuff,” she took care of Gracie for the last of her 19 years of life with compassion and excellent advise. Dr. Penyy did everything she could to help us keep Gracie as healthy and comfortable as possible, without advising any unnecessary measures, as we dealt with the various illnesses that develop with an aging cat. When there was nothing more we could do, the entire staff was incredibly compassionate when the day came that we had to let our very much loved Gracie go. No words of praise or recommendation are good enough to describe how incredible this office is. Our only regret is that we didn’t find them sooner. As far as we are concerned, there is no place better to take your cat than The Cat Doctor.

I took my cat Hakuna to The Cat Doctor for boarding, referred to by another veterinarian who only boarded dogs. I was very thankful that I did, for their care, attention to detail, and quality of staff and facilities were outstanding. The veterinarian and her assistant were dutiful and detailed in her screening exam, pinpointing areas to ensure Hakunas long-term health. The desk staff were friendly and patient, and provided me with digital and paper copies of my receipts and Hakunas medical records. The care attendant for Hakuna was excellent, sending me emails and photos with updates every other day. I was highly impressed with The Cat Doctor and the overall facility. The staff were very professional and put me at ease over Hakunas care. The rates are very affordable, the two-story kitty condo was spacious and clean for Hakuna, and the location is good providing access to a car. I was so impressed with The Cat Doctor that I am transferring my veterinary care needs to them from my neighborhood vet, who is not bad but not nearly as thorough and professional. Excellent choice for our family, including our feline family member.

I usually am a review lurker and not a writer. There is a reason this place has PERFECT reviews. My cat was diagnosed with bad stomatitis (periodontal disease brought on by an immune deficiency disorder) about a year ago by my regular vet in Queens. I tried all the potential remedies which didnt work and the last resort was to remove all her teeth at an exorbitant cost. I found the Groupon for a health check at The Cat Doctor and brought her for a second opinion. Dr. Penyy confirmed that this was a severe case and the teeth should be extracted. I was shocked that she could do it for 1/3 the cost of what I was quoted for in Queens. The surgery was a success and my cat is feeling better already. Dr. Penyy and her staff know their stuff and all were true professionals throughout everything. 100% recommend.

Our previous vet diagnosed our senior cat with mid-to-late stage CKD and delivered us a somber prognosis that he was going to kick the bucket very soon without a constant, relentless supply of low-protein prescription Hills food, which they conveniently sold on the premises. Just a remark on feeding our cat home-made food was met with borderline derision. Also got a vibe that the alternative to a prescription diet was to put him down then and there, because without the prescription food he was toast. And the front desk was like a mini-Petsmart, with bags and cans up and down the walls. After that experience I ran out the door intent on finding a new vet.I complained during the drive to The Cat Doctor that it wouldnt be much better and would ultimately be a waste of time. How wrong I was. Dr. Penyy set the record straight (senior kittys CKD was in fact early-stage), recommended over the counter medication to make him more comfortable and improve his QOL, and finally referred us to Cornell for a tailored home-made diet, after we broached the subject. No ridicule, no lecture on the endless danger of feeding animals human food - just some tips and a referral. Needless to say she knocked it out of the park and our cat has been doing fairly well since then. That was three years ago. The pragmatism and realistic assessments that we have gotten from Dr. Penyy over the years have kept me comfortable coming back. She has since been our go-to for keeping the old kittys hyperthyroidism in check, and the pragmatism and actionable advice never ceases to impress us.These folks care about animals, have the necessary expertise and above all are not running a commercialized pump-and-dump operation like my last vet (and so many others). Recommendations for brand names are provided sparingly and usually if asked - never pushed - and upselling is kept to a minimum. The walls of the front desk arent lined with product, and whats there is not relentlessly pushed. Pricing feels above average but the quality of care IMO makes it worth the cost. Front desk is always friendly and accommodating, although scheduling can be difficult because of how busy the place is, but they do their best to get everyones cat seen and it shows. The lobby and rooms are kept clean. I have nothing but praise and I tend to think that The Cat Doctor saved my cat, because if I listened to my last vet he probably wouldnt be around now.
