Today was the first visit for my St. Bernard puppy-Peaches. All in all it was a great visit- most of the staff were helpful and personable and Jess, Danielle & Dr. Patrick were wonderful with Peaches! I did feel very well informed and was Offered a care plan which Jess went over the particulars of, but Apparently things got changed before I got to the checkout window unbeknownst to me. Jess was kind and came up front to assist and explain the changes made at the suggestion of Dr Patrick. I did have to call the office after I got home, as I forgot to present a coupon- I spoke with Kirsten who was exceptionally helpful and friendly. I am hopeful they will honor the coupon to help with the cost of my initial visit.

I volunteer for a local animal rescue and we took some sick kittens and their mom in for Evaluation. We unfortunately were seen by DR Patrick who was extremely rude and Dismissed my concern regarding how sick one of the kittens was. When I explained this kitten was not eating she rudely looked at me and said “I see it nursing” which It was not just laying up against the mom cat which I tried to explain to Dr Patrick but she cut me off. Two days later the kitten was STILL not eating well and I called Shaker first thing in the am to see if I could bring the kitten back in. The Receptionist was very nice and said she would see what she could do. Unfortunately she asked Dr Patrick if I could bring the kitten back in and Dr Patrick told her NO there was no openings I would have to bring the kitten to the emergency vet if I was that “worried”. Unfortunately the kitten who Dr Patrick rudely told me was not that sick did not make it. The whole experience left a rotten taste in my mouth. I suggest DR Patrick finds another field as she lacks the Integrity and compassion to be working with animals

Great vet to bring your fur babies to. They always try their best to get me in asap. They also have a wellness plan you can sign up for that you pay monthly and includes unlimited vet visits, all their shots, microchip, lab work and more starting at $52/month for kitties! And they always call the next day to check up on your pets too. I bring both my kitties #pinky_squeakie (Instagram)

Shaker vet should be ashamed of themselves…they take your money and then don’t return calls about the results….Put my dog on meds and no one could tell me what to do after that…I begged for a call from the vet but never has happened… this place has turned into a money grab…Ive been with them for 2 of my dogs and receive horrible service as of late…Who ever runs this place should be I ashamed of the horrible quality of service…Dr cherry is the best I must say there…but he’s only doing surgeries…I surely miss his service…for the rest. I must say it’s really a half star at best …My dog Jake deserves better…. Still prob never get a call back... Thanks. Mike

VCA certainly takes care of my dogs medical needs, but they go the extra mile. I was hesitant to board my little one, but the staff love my pup while Im away and genuinely love spending quality time with her. Big thanks to everyone at VCA Shaker - vets, techs, front desk, kennel staff, etc. - I appreciate how you care for my pup

The star is for the vet techs and the front desk staff. They were friendly and helpful. This review is about the doctor. My dog can have major issues with strangers and that appears to be aggression when its actually nervousness and having no idea how to act. She just goes crazy with the jumping and barking. Shes never had a problem at the vets office though, not in the 2.5 years that shes been alive. Well this doctor walked in and she immediately went crazy. People who dont know better will look her in the eye and try to lean in and talk softly to her. If you know dogs, this doesnt work. You need to back off, maybe even turn your back. Id think a vet would know this? I had her safely on a leash and she wouldnt have been able to get to him, had he backed off. But instead, he tackled her and stabbed her with the cytopoint shot. I almost cried. I said this isnt helping! My dog was so terrified she was shaking. Needless to say, I let that vet have a large piece of my mind. I will never go back and Id recommend no one else go there either. My one issue with front desk staff was with the one that said he would pull my dogs records (from other VCA hospitals) when I made my appointment (at least two weeks out). The morning of the appointment I got a call asking if I could bring the records. Well, no, that wasnt on my radar because you said you would get them. Apparently my dogs proof of rabies vaccine was nowhere in the records I had, but my dog wouldnt have been allowed to board a plane from Hawaii to the mainland without a rabies shot.Anyway, that was all straightened out and I have the rabies certificate in my possession now. Ill never provide it to VCA Shaker however, because I will NEVER go back there. I needed to get in quickly for my dogs bi-monthly cytopoint shot but now I can book at a more reputable vet that doesnt have immediate openings. And that has a less angry, more professional veterinarian. Seriously, he needs to have his license revoked.

Prices have become exorbitant in the last 2 years and no one can justify the increase. Whenever I have asked they just say I know, we understand, its frustrating, etc. Below are some example prices for one dog since 2020:2020Exam - $72.502021Exam - $85.502022Exam - $95.85Cost increases like this add up, and this doesnt include vaccines or bloodwork. Aside from exam prices their off schedule exams, aka charging you again for an exam and vaccine, have gone from $37 to $54.55. I know people make the excuse that prices are going up everywhere, but going up every year while being unable to give a concrete reason and trying to get people to buy insurance that only works at VCA is ridiculous. And these are preventative things, not even specialist care! Before Shaker fell under the VCA corporate umbrella they were so much better, now they just want whatever money they can get out of you because they know people love their pets. They also tell you to bring your pet to whatever vet is available for a check up rather than have your pet get used to someone, and likewise have the vet get to know them. For some people this may not matter, for others its a big deal. There are a few good vets here, but there are also good vets elsewhere who wont charge you an arm and a leg while increasing prices year after year.

The doctors are wonderful, along with most of the entry level staff. But the majority of upper management, the medical director excluded, are unempathetic of their team and fellow staff. With the turnover rate you would think they would realize at some point that maybe they are the problem. After reading over VCA as a whole on Glassdoor I understand why nothing was ever looked into including one manager listening to the security feed to hear if anyone was talking about them, the company as a whole seems to have terrible upper management all around. I wish the few remaining employees the best of luck and hope-know- their next adventure will treat them better than this one.

I had to actually rewrite this three times, because while typing I was overcome with a lot of emotions... frustration, anger, disappointment...These people that are doing reviews here, are standing outside of a burning building yelling at you not to go inside.... And people still do. Corporate purchased this, thats the problem. Its not that James doesnt care, hes too busy crammed with appointments and there is no time management, There is no time for time management. Not even to call a customer back after about 12 calls while my cats condition is worsening... Thank you for nothing. Plus you guys charged for things that were already done at a different hospital less than a month prior. You guys tell people blood work results will be the next day, and then the customers get them a week later. You guys told us that it is almost definitively jaw cancer, only to make us wait another week to find out that it isnt. This is stressful. Very stressful. Shame on you guys and shame on corporate. Dont even bother writing me a response on this because its too late, the damage has been done, and now we have a level 7 Google guide review splattered at the top. Well deserved. This would be an example of how not to run a business. This is the same corporate ideology that has infected everything in America. Lose a customer? Who cares? We will just get another one. Find a local independently owned place that actually cares about having your business. Buyer beware. And like I said, corporate - you are wasting your time to reply to this. I hope you guys are toast within the year. Its a shame Google doesnt allow zero stars.....I would advise anyone that is working here to strongly consider finding a new place of employment because this kind of performance is not sustainable. Just my 2 cents. I have gotten better service at a trap house in Poughkeepsie. In response to your response :Things happen in real time, and for every action or non-action theres a consequence. Let this be a lesson for how you need to handle time management, leadership, and accountability . The review stays. Thank you for your AI generated response. You stay late, you come in early, you keep track of who called and didnt get a call back, why am I explaining basic level 101 How to run a business to you? I could care less about your response, Ill never forget how that experience was. The cat is dead and gone now, it doesnt matter. What matters is people need to know who they should NOT support and do business with. Theres absolutely no good reason why. My wife and I called over a week and a half with no response after you took out money. GTFOH 🤌 trying to backpedal and justify it ... Come on.I would expect to fail if I ran a business or company like this. Rightfully so!

Unprofessional and a practice that just doesnt seem to care about animals and their owners. Took five days to get an appointment scheduled for my cat after his ultrasound (would call and be put on hold and then was on hold for so long that I was sent to voicemail and this happened repeatedly on different days. And then when I did leave a voicemail I didnt receive a call back even after 24 hrs had passed so I called again and was told the doctor would call to discuss the results the next day when he was back in the office and he never called.) Then over a week ago signed paperwork to have records sent to our new vet and had to call back today since they still hadnt sent the records over.

I cannot recommend this clinic. Based upon our experience, their processes and procedures are unreliable. Our initial issue was we received a mislabeled prescription for our dog. Fortunately, I caught it and brought it to their attention. Next, when I spoke to the office manager about another issue with prescriptions, what I got was an argumentative interaction, something I was not expecting from someone in that role.As new customers/patients these experiences left us feeling uncomfortable with the level of service and care we would receive from this practice, and made the decision to go elsewhere.

This veterinary practice is the main reason why good people can’t afford to take quality care of their pets. After moving to NY and spending $2500 dollars to establish my 4 dogs at this vet, they refused to provide emergency service to our dog during the normal open hours and knowing our unique situation. Which then required us to spend another $1500 dollars at an emergency vet who mistreated our dog. After spending the amount of resources to establish the dogs there they then proceeded to nickel and dime us for care. To get our two dogs rabies boosters they wanted to charge $240 dollars for a set of $30 dollar shots. For additional exams when we had just established the dogs there recently. This vet was recommended because Dr. Wolfe was a provider and closely associated with AKC German Shepherds, and was recommended for our multi pet household. He is never there and has no purview over the practice. The real downfall is the inability for good pet owners to get quality care at a reasonable price. Not a good practice or business model for moderate income homes who want to take care of their furry friends.Update: The vet manager commented to this repost with a similar response to other bad reviews (see all other 1 star reviews) . When I complained about the the extras fees & exam we just recently had and said I wouldn’t pay for the vet to do anything but give the two booster shots, I was dismissed from the practice as a customer. They are preying on the ignorant for fees attached to basic care (see other posts).

So disappointed in this vet. We have been going to shaker for quite a few years and had to make the switch to someone else. We have had a few instances where I was disappointed in our care there, but today was the last straw. I had called a few weeks ago to make an appointment for our dogs and was willing to wait to get them in together. I tried to make the appointment over the phone and was told they would have to “get back to me” as the providers schedule was not in the computer yet. I ended up having to call two more times for someone to actually schedule me (no one ever called me back as they said they would two different times). We waited, and I took time off work for the appointment. We get there, text immediately, and are texted back that we are checked in. We waited for an hour to get called in, so I called the office. I’m then told that they accidentally scheduled us for a day the provider wasn’t even working!!! Yet somehow we were checked in.They tried to get us in with another provider since we were already there but they couldn’t fit us in. So after waiting an 1 hr and 15 minutes we had to go home. I was so disgusted with this that I made an appointment with another vet before I even left their parking lot. So disappointed. They have had so much provider turnover since we have started going there. It’s gone way down hill. Look elsewhere.

I’ve been a long-time patient at this facility and have not had any issues that sparked the need for a review until today. A few weeks ago, my cat went in for an annual exam and some vaccines. We were instructed to come back in 3-4 weeks for one booster shot. Upon check out I noticed that I was being charged for another exam fee on top of the booster fee. I was in the exam room for less than 10 minutes but was still charged $40 for an “off schedule vaccination”. When I called to dispute the charge I was told that it is technically an off schedule visit because it wasn’t apart of the wellness exam even though we were instructed to come back for the booster during the annual exam. There was no reason for me to be charged for another exam fee when that was neither the service that was scheduled nor provided. We will not be returning.

I would HIGHLY recommend Shaker, especially Dr. Little & Dr. Becker. Both of these doctors have multiple times worked many miracles on my dogs getting that back to their healthy selves. They are very easy to get appointments with as well, they have some of the best hours in the capital district, making it easy to avoid the pricey emergency clinic. They even have emergency hours on top of late appointments, late meaning after 7pm for those that work normal day jobs. I think sometimes they are a bit more expensive than other clinics but you get what you pay for and Shaker literally rocks. I would not trust ANYONE else to treat my animals.

They could see me..no one else around and it wasnt till I got up close and then they decided to ask me if I needed anything. I asked why we had been waiting an hour. It is almost 10pm... they said our dog was next but had no idea how long the vet would be.I understand how you can fall behind.. but have the decency to inform anyone what there is a wait...Also to mention when booking the appointment, I was hung up on THREE times before someone decided theyd like to talk.We left because we waited far too long for a simple tech appointment. We will not be returning.

This is a busy multi-doctor office with long hours. Theyre all good vets, and if you have an emergency or need to be seen quickly, this is a good place to take your pet. However, as a long-term care or a chronic condition, Id advise against. Their diagnostics must be read out to you by a doctor. Theyd prefer that the doctor requesting the test do the reading, but most doctors arent in very often. And when they are in, calling patients with results is not a very high priority. It can be very frustrating to have an expensive test performed to figure out why your pet is sick, then wait several days, while your pet suffers, to hear what the tests showed. The front desk seems always understaffed, and you can spend quite a while being ignored by staff. I overheard a few near-misses with confusion between patients, and had a difficult time myself making clear how my pet was to be treated. That said, I was pleased to see they had a collar with instructions on my pet when I dropped him off - simple, failsafe procedures are how you prevent mistakes. The lobby smells strongly of stressed-out animals, but the exam rooms were clean and the veterinary procedures I could see were carried out with appropriate techniques.Overall, everyone cares and wants to do right by your pet, but the place strikes me as just barely managing to hold it together.

VCA Shaker Animal Hospital used to be fantastic, but after an exodus of several great veterinarians I cant recommend the place any longer. Its hard to get an appointment and it definitely feels more corporate than it used to. Its also become extremely expensive. The vets Ive seen since my regular vets left have not been nearly as caring. Two longtime patients of the practice (two of my cats) passed away at the emergency vet and when I asked them to remove the cats from any appointments or other records I didnt even receive a reply (and in one case still received a marketing e-mail). I understand they didnt die there but thought they would care more about clients with a longtime relationship to the place. If/when I adopt a new cat, I will not go back.

Update: The problem that initially got this place one star (which is, after all, no star...) appears to have been fixed. Our birdies have been to see their Uncle Simon (hed been seeing our birds before we all moved around...) and the result has been very satisfactory. Dr. Starkie is exactly as he seems: Very smart, very thorough, a credit to both his universities (he did his vet degree in Australia and his PhD and a couple residences at Cornell). The staff is generally solid; the front desk particularly so. The prices are premium, and that is worrisome (we have >lots< of birdies...). One of our birds had a nasty C. botulinum infection in his gut, and the on-the-spot lab work as well as the ability to get the vet-specific version of the medicine meant quick attention.I am told that part of the original problem was that the practice had been going through some changes, shedding some vets and not yet having replaced them. The staff shortage was advanced as part of the reason for the initial difficulty. That is, I gather, being resolved.===================This is an initial reaction to a very stupid policy. This VCA shop recently added to its staff a highly qualified avian vet. I know this vet; my birds were his patients when we lived in town before moving here to the boonies. We anticipated with great pleasure the idea of having this board-certified avian vet, who has seen our birds in the past, available once again. As it happens, one of our guys is less than usually perky, and I booked a visit with this vet -- who is, BTW, the only >real< doctor in the place (he has a PhD, not just the undergrad degree in vet-med most them have). I just got a call from the shop, cancelling the visit; this board-certified (in fact, he actually ran the board-certification exam at one point), super-qualified veterinarian has been relegated to doggy-&-kitty medicine or cow-doctoring or some other quotidian twaddle.I understand the practice does have some girl who looks after small animals other than doggies and kitties -- but shes got a bun in the oven and is off tending to her tummy. In any case, I would not use her services; she is >not< a board-certified avian vet, so I am told. Her credentials are -- muddy....Put it this way: This very large, very corporate practice has decided to be incredibly stupid -- that is, they have shown manifest deficiency in judgment. If needed, I can always make a run to Cornell, where I will not be fobbed off with some inept care and management.I note in passing a string of crappy reviews for this place. Clearly VCA management needs to shake this place up. And clearly, I concur in these crappy reviews.

I had brought my pup here for an emergency late one evening and instantly felt like home. That all changed when I had another emergency with my pup and was disrespectfully spoken to by Dr. Becker. My pup had been restless, running a temperature, and had uncontrollable twitching for a couple of hours. I took her to the emergency vet, whose staff was helpful, friendly, and understanding. The emergency vet had given my dog 2 injections and an oral medicine. Upon leaving, they told me the medicine should kick in by the time I got home. It hadnt. So when I called the emergency vet, they told me to give her another pill and that should start working in an hour. Well, I waited 3 hours. So called Shaker Vet to see if I could my dog in for the first appointment. The person took my information and said she didnt have access to the scheduling but shell have a doctor call me. About 5 minutes later, Dr. Becker called. I began to explain the medicine the emergency vet gave my dog and told her it wasnt working. She rudely said, you need to chill out! The medicine doesnt work instanteously. Its only been a couple of hours! We open at 8am - you can bring your dog in then and then hung the phone up. I understand what it is like to be on-call, I did it for 10 years working in the resident halls for a college. But I would never speak to a client the way Dr. Becker spoke to me. Where was her empathy? Her patience? Her concern? If she does not like her sleep interrupted, she need not be on-call.And because of Dr. Beckers unprofessionalism and lack of concern for my emergency, Shaker Vet will be the LAST vet I will bring my pup ESPECIALLY if we have to be seen and treated by Dr. Becker.

Wow, where to start with how great my experience was with Shaker Animal Hospital. My cat is not a regular patient and when I called at 8:45 a.m. on a Saturday, they were able to see us just 30 minutes later. My cat had been really sick with something stomach/intestinal related and was approaching dehydration. Both the vet tech, Terry, and the vet, Dr. Mackay, were really thorough with their approach to treatment. Rarely have I received such good care myself when going to a human doctor. I spent almost three hours in the exam room getting a diagnosis, explanations and demonstrations for treatment and no time did I ever feel rushed or that my questions were unnecessary. While a visit that involves x-rays, blood work and medicine to take home is not cheap, the peace of mind I have knowing that my cat was given such a comprehensive examination, is well worth it.

My Review is based on years of giving this place our money. I can say after 5 plus years today was the breaking point. This stems back to 2017 when my male dog was brought in and let go for the bloat in less than hour they released him. Thank god the fast thinking of my now X and myself we took him directly to the ER in Latham. When we tried to sit down and talk to the vet with everyone present they shrugged it off like it was nothing. 7k later between the ER and the 1 hour visit to Shaker our dog was saved. Fast forward 2 years I now have a female sheppard. I have come to realize this place is all about the money. My Female dog had problem that she had been seen by the Vet 3 times from May to mid June of this year and there solution after X-rays, 3 visits and pain meds was she was over worked. My Female dog was not overworked, what was found out was she had an infection that they had missed not once but twice. that ordeal was over 1k in charges after spending 1400 on the care club they offer nothing was covered under that. Today was the kicker, 3 times my female has been groomed and each time I ask and get the same price of 77. Nov 2019, feb 2020 and today. Each time I get the bill its 91 with taxes. Again been using this service with this location since before 2015. My male dog never cost this much and still they hike up the prices on my female dog . I called to speak to the manager and I was met with attitude. They will say no to that statement but I had a witness with me for the phone call. I was told this is the price and you paid it once before. 1st I had my bank records in front me of while on the phone and could see the 2 other charges from nov 2019 and Feb 2020 both where the same price of 77.89. Today 7/24/20 they hit me with a 91.64 charge for todays, and the best part was I was not looking for a anything for free i was looking for it to be fair. Instead the manager was rude and said I will comp today but it is best you never come back again. My opinion and its my opinion I think this place has some really nice people but a select few that are corp minded have destroyed this place. As for me I will never bring either of my pets back her again I suggest you all think very hard before using this place.

Honestly this place is way more interested in making money than helping animals or their owners. I brought my cat here to address a mass growing inside is mouth. I was hit with a $300 bill for the visit and lab work and a $2000 estimate for the procedure to remove it. After going back and forth with them for a while, we were able to pare it down to around $800- which means more than half of what was included in the estimate was optional (including an over $400 dental cleaning), but not presented as optional until I pressed. One of the things we eliminated, at Dr. Patricks suggestion, was sending the mass out for testing to find out what it is. I told her that was fine, we just wanted it removed to improve his quality of life. After his procedure I got a call from Dr. Patrick saying she didnt understand why we wouldnt send the biopsy out for testing.... I told her she was the one who suggested it, and she replied there was basically no reason to do the procedure if youre not going to send it out, and that removing the whole mass would have been a much more involved procedure, and without removing the whole thing it will 100% grow back. This is not AT ALL what we had previously discussed. When I went to pick him up I expressed my concerns and asked some follow up questions to the staff member that did our discharge. She said she would gather information from the vet and the techs that did the procedure, and give me a call to follow up. Still havent heard from anyone. They also only gave us half of the antibiotics we were supposed to get so I had to make another trip there to pick more up. Overall very disappointed in our experience and would NOT recommend.

0 stars. If you want what’s best for your pet, please don’t take them to VCA Shaker Animal hospital! If you don’t read everything-the takeaway is that these vets are unorganized, careless, negligent, and don’t care at all about your pet- they only care about money! Our experience was absolutely outrageous- we put our trust in their hands and they broke it. Our poor dog had to wait weeks to be seen, got prescribed incorrect medicine, and got diagnosed incorrectly twice before he died. Our dog, Apollo, has been coming to this vet for the last couple of years, and although we’ve never loved these vets, we didn’t have any horrible experiences until now. However, we just went through the most terrible ordeal with them when Apollo’s life was ending- and we wanted to warn others. Apollo stopped eating for two weeks and we called to schedule an emergency appointment. They initially could not see him for a week. They also initially diagnosed him incorrectly, and told us that he had a bacterial infection, and prescribed him antibiotics. After nothing changed over a week we brought him back in. Each time we had to schedule a new appt, it was a battle to get one within a week or two (even though they knew how sick he was). They saw him again, and diagnosed him incorrectly, AGAIN, with a liver issue, prescribing him liver meds and more antibiotics. Each time we had to get medicine from them, they would tell us that they would call us the next day, but they never would- and each time we had to track them down, and wait days for medications. They informed us they could not do any blood work there for a full week because they didn’t have vets on staff(makes 0 sense for a specialized animal hospital) and referred us elsewhere. For a second time, they had to refer us to another hospital for the specialized procedures-even though they call themselves a specialized hospital. So, finally after a month and a half of Apollo not eating anything, and forcing him to take pills that weren’t even helping him, the referral(not VCA) told us that he had lymphoma and would not make it- but that they could give us steroids to help make the rest of his life better. Once again, it took two days, and we had to track down a vet to get the steroids- even though they knew he was dying, and only had a few days left. When we called for the steroids, the front desk person didn’t even know Apollo was dying and said the last thing written in the book was that he was doing better... not sure who wrote that, but within the last two months of him becoming sick, he was never doing better. Finally, he started breathing badly 4 days later, and once again we took him in. The vet told us that the breathing could be a reaction to his steroids, (I googled & didn’t see any side effects of the steroids, besides tiredness and increased appetite) and gave him a shot, prescribed more meds “to make him comfortable” (I googled the meds and it was a form of antacid..?), charged me $350, and offered to give him a $400 x-ray to see if it was the lymphoma or the medicine...? They really tried to charge me money for an x-ray when my dog was a day away from dying. Apollo ended up passing the next night, so the poor breathing was obviously caused by the lymphoma. Even with no medical training, I could tell by the evening that it was Apollo’s time, but they couldn’t?! It’s absolutely ridiculous what we went through. We still have not even heard from them to check in on Apollo or me. It’s apparent they don’t care an ounce about either of us; which is really important when your pets health is at stake. It’s also apparent that they had no clue what was happening with him medically the entire time, but kept charging me thousands of dollars. The staff is unorganized and the phones are barely answered; or you have to call them until you get an answer, even though they are supposed to call you. They truly made this experience a living hell for me and I wish that Apollo had better end-of-life care. Moral of the story: please don’t take your pet here if you love them and want the best for them!

Took my Royal here because he has lumps under his neck and was whimpering in pain. Called over 7 times for results, not one doctor called me back. Called today and was told his attending doctor was doing a dental cleaning. Receptionist tried to see if another doctor would speak to me about my baby lab results, whom said he prefer Dr. Patrick discuss them with me. Was promised a phone call before everyone left for the night which is 7pm. No call. My fur baby is getting worse. Was prescribed antibiotics without even advising me what the diagnosis was or if they even found one. Paid over $1100 with no results. How can they not call you with results or call just to give an update. I am truly angry. My pooch is almost 11 years old and Ive had him since he was 16wks. Im hurt and so confused. I WANT ANSWERS! Negative 10 stars if I could. Brought my cat who couldnt walk and wasnt eating to be checked out. I walked in the door already crying thinking it was time to put him down. First thing Im told when I get in the door is that the cat needs to be in a carrier. While I would generally understand this rule my cat was hardly able to move and completely out of it. Once I explained this I got a snarky remark back saying it didnt matter and the cat needed to be in a carrier. After a 20 minute wait in the waiting room we were taken into a room and my cat was taken into the back to draw blood. He came back sopping wet, cold to the touch and shivering. He had heart issues and upper respiratory issues most of his life. I discussed euthanasia with the dr but she recommended doing a dental procedure telling me that that was the next best step. She said she suspected he wasnt eating because his teeth are rotting and need to be removed. My cat was basically dying in my arms and they wanted to put him under to clean and pull his teeth. 15 YEAR OLD CAT WITH HEART ISSUES! This would have killed him for sure!!I walked out and never came back. I found a wonderful vet to come to my home and euthanize my cat in peace. They were incredibly kind and almost the same price with cremation and returning ashes. These are the rudest money hungry people Ive ever met. They dont care for a second about your pet only the paycheck. I promise its not worth the risk of going here.Even in an emergency I will never return.

Seriously, not good. They forgot our appointment and thus left a healthy but frantic animal waiting in a cage in our car for 2 hours until she was so stressed she was dooling and panting and had to be placed in an oxygen cage. They refused to even discuss (nevermind diagnose) a condition we asked questions about because we found information about it ON THEIR WEBSITE. They seemed to lack the knowledge. They said go see a specialist with no explanation. On three occasions they promised to return calls and failed to do so. When we called with a follow-up question we were told we had already had our chance to talk with the vet during the phone consultation before the exam ans were really annoyed that we wanted more. I could go on but I wont. The vet herself seemed competent but Id say just make another choice. There are plenty of vets around.

When I made the appt the girl said it would cost 64.00 to walk in the door (not bad compared to the 135.00 other vets wanted). Dr Patrick really knew her business and handled our cat as such. The girls at the desk were nice enough. But 468.60 later for meds, rabies shot, x-rays, x-ray consult and antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicine. We were shocked. I truly feel they should have told us before they did the x-rays we r elderly and on a fixed income. Plus its 10 days before christmas and we still have Xmas shopping to do. But crazy prices!

Ive brought in two obviously sick and in pain cats with expectations that they would be seen, evaluated, diagnosed and treatment started. Not the case here. Both times I was told to either leave the cat or bring the cat back later. One cat had a huge tumor behind her eye and was moving into her brain. The tumor was putting great pressure on her eye and causing pain. The vet I saw on Friday told me to bring the cat back on Monday for tests. Saturday, I realized the cat was in intolerable pain and suffering and returned to Shaker. Thankfully this visit I had a smart female vet who wasnt playing games. She moved it out, got x-rays, and told me what was going on and that she strongly suggested putting the cat down immediately. I saw how large the tumor was with my cats eye bulging out. I also saw how much pain this cat was in. So, I had this beloved 15 yo cat put down immediately to stop the suffering. That was it. One incompetent fool og a vet playing games with me and it was obvious the cat was in serious trouble. The day was still early, the waiting room mostly empty, no excuse for blowing my cat off from Friday morning to Monday.Stupid, incompetent, game playing. Did I add terribly over priced? I am more than happy to pay for my cats and dogs as my wife and I love them terribly. But pushing off an obviously pained animal just to play testing games later on was it.The Only vet we will see in emergencies is Dr. Patrick. Smart, no game playing. The rest of the vets are stupid -- point blank.VCA SHAKER: You have read the same complaints leveled at you for running up charges and rude staff and incompetent vets. Do something. Change the way you operate. Right now far too many of your clients view you as Theives and not professional vets. Red flags should be going up in your collective faces that You have a number of very serious problems -- all very valid problems concerning Care of the cat or dog, less waiting times or billing. Fix yourself now.

We dont know how old he is, but he was sick... we spent 2 years going from vet to vet trying to help him. I wont name the failures. But when we came to Shaker Veterinary, we knew that these guys were the A team. Rather than just continuing along the wrong paths, they sent us to a specialist and that problem was readily handled - what a waste of our time, our money and our pets quality of life going to all those other vets. Have you ever noticed how the vets are like a merry go round - theres a different one every time. Not so at Shaker Veterinary...,.there are multiple vets but theyre all awesome and theyre all the same people....the names dont change. They put themselves in your shoes as if it was your pet. Our dog has been sick and had to stay in their hospital. I was able to check in on him anytime that I wanted to. They continually updated me about his condition...how much I had spent and what it would cost to go further. I really like to go to a doctor that understands my pet, understands me, and recognizes that there are also financial constraints. My only regret is that I didnt find them sooner.

Except for a few female vets, the rest of the vets must be on some sort of incentive plan to drag out testing, diagnosis, and treatment in order to drive up the charges. These are businessmen first -- vets who care about cat/dog life and health as an afterthought. While noone expects vet care for free, this is a business with people who must be paid fair salaries, this group views animal medicine purely as a money making operation and nothing more.Far too many of the vets are incompetent and the cat/dog suffer for this.I do Not recommend this vet hospital unless you find the few super bright, competent and caring vets. Apparently those rare gems dont stick around and go elsewhere, leaving the businessmen.Front desk staff are often rude. Oddly, techs are usually well trained and kind. This vet hospital has been like this since they opened many years ago in the 1970s. I thought there might be change in businss plan and less businessmen from the time I was age 17 to now 57, but this is not the case. Nothing changed in that 40 year timeframe -- from the first dog I brought in to the last dog I brought in recently after deciding to try this vet hospital once more.Truly a shame Dr. Lamb of decades ago is long gone.

I have had multiple disappointing experiences here, but the last one was fatal. The tech weighed my cat, and gave me a surprisingly low number(14.7lbs). When the vet came in, I asked with concern, and was told that the tech had simply converted kilograms to pounds incorrectly, and that his actual weight was normal (19.1 lbs). It was not until a couple of months later, I saw how little he was eating, and rushed him to the ER in Latham. He was kept overnight and I was informed of an obstruction in his colon. I would have literally done anything I could have, but they said it was too advanced at that point to operate. He was given only a few more months to live. I accept my part in not recognizing it sooner, but I brought him to a professional and paid a lot of money for them to give me false and fatal information. When I called to ask how this could have happened (I had to get records for ER and to switch vets) they explained that they were switching systems, and the vet must have been looking at the old number from a previous visit, instead of the written note from the tech. How on earth could that not have been communicated? It is inexcusable, and now I don’t have my best friend.**This edit is only to reply to the owner: is it just your PR policy to tell people to reach out so that my concerns may be addressed? I addressed them here, to hopefully prevent the next victim of your carelessness. If you had any real concern, this probably would not have happened in the first place. It is also rude and pointless to publicly feign concern by telling me to reach out to you... to address something which is past the point of remedy.

I didnt get a call until thirty minutes after my scheduled time, as they were looking for me. Thirty minutes waiting for an appointment is unacceptable. No one ever so much as mentioned it might be a long wait. This is consistent with prior experiences. To make matters worse, I sent an email to the email address provided in all of these Google reviews a full week ago and never heard anything back. Apparently Shaker Vet will respond to customer concerns only when they are public.

After taking my puppy to board at Shaker Vet for 4 days he was returned to my care so dehydrated and sick he didnt recognize me and so sick he had to be hospitalized to get IV fluids and placed on anti-diarrhea medication and pain meds for a week. Not to mention that while he was at Shaker Vet he was supposed to see the vet for vaccinations that he never got and the heartworm medication he was supposed to go home with wasnt ready when he picked him up and the front desk tried to tell us he had never had it before (he was given it in his new puppy kit but they never kept a record of it in his health charts). Then when I called to complain about the how sick he was and how appalled I was by the HORRIBLE treatment our VET provided, I was told, by the vet, well if I had seen him, I could have helped him....she was supposed to see him but, again, they didnt do their job. Then I was told if it was a money-thing they would give me half of my money back. ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? Try, caring for the animals you are supposed to be looking after. It was a you didnt take care of my PUPPY-THING.They obviously just stuck my 12 week old puppy in a cage for 4 days and left him to fend for himself and then acted like it was his fault he didnt make a stink that he was sick and neglected the whole time. The real kicker is over a year later, they are still sending me vet reminder cards. This place should be shut down.I hate you Shaker Vet.

Our dog became suddenly ill. Shaker is or rather was our vet so we naturally we brought her there. After tests were in , our June had cancer. We found out how badly the cancer had progressed by coming home to a lengthy message left on our answering machine, they had our cell number as well but chose the answering machine, hmmm. To make a long story shorter, we were passed around to multiple Drs, yet no one took the time to tell us our options or even discuss the results in detail of the ultra-sound that showed the cancer. We decided to be pro-active and investigate on line what steps we could take to help our Junie. We had to ask the Dr to prescribe specific meds that could extend our pets quality of life, they didnt offer us any paths to take. The most responsible person to help us and treat us with some dignity was Cathy, the receptionist. No Dr ever got back in touch with us to see how June was doing. Shameful! We pulled Junes records and went to another area vet, on Wolf Rd in Colonie. They took the time to read Junes records, view her cancer results and discuss a plan, in detail, to help with Junes quality of life. Well, June died this morning, our hearts are broken and we are angry with the way Shaker wrote June off, just another terminally ill old dog... We have 2 other dogs, never will they see a Dr at Shaker, no matter the circumstance. This happened, choose wisely for your pet, they rely on us to do the right thing.

The prices are fairly high compared to other vets in the area. Cost of treatment should be discussed with clients BEFORE treatment is done. Many people these days live paycheck to paycheck and therefore may not be able to afford certain treatments. If prices were discussed before-hand and an estimate of total treatment cost provided, customers would be able to choose a treatment plan they can afford instead of being surprised by a high vet bill at the end. This would result in many more happy long-term clients. Instead, you are losing customers because you decide to go ahead with the treatment and then at the end give the client sticker shock when they see the price. I cant understand this business model.

I used to be a fan of this vet until today. My cat came in with a patch on his upper neck & they said it was from the healing of a surgery he had to have. But yet his surgery was on his lower half of his body. and even his hair there has fully grown back. I feel like we were told anything & rushed out because we were the last appointment. It’s not worth it to pay for an exam when the pet is not actually examined

I have been going to Shaker Vet for almost 20 years. The service is outstanding. They really do care about the well being of your pet. They have always been accommodating, especially since my Murphy Finnegan is part of the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. I cannot imagine going anywhere else, and we just love Dr.Crowe and all the staff.

I was very hesitant to call this place because of the manyyy bad reviews.Out of desperation I called because I have a really sick bird and there are not to many vet practices that treat birds.I did find a few other practices that said they treated birds, however, this hospital was the only one that has right on their website a board certified avian vet! So I called and told the girl I had a very sick bird and wanted to know if I could get an appointment. The girl said uhh...we dont treat birds here. I said oh what about Dr. Starkey I thought he was the avian vet.She said oh he only treats cats and dogs now.Ok so first off, you need to UPDATE your website then cause Dr. Starkey is listed as their AVIAN VET!!! Secondly...Dr. Starkeys bio lists all his experience and in avian and exotic medicine why would he waste all his vast knowledge, and experience in avian medicine, to be treating cats and dogs??!! Especially when avian vets are hard to come by!! Just as well since all the bad reviews here! Luckily I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Joy Lucas whos an excellent avian vet at Upstate...just didnt want to go that far but oh well my boy is worth it and that practice has good reviews!

I’ve been bringing my pets here for over 15 years. I called tonight for an appointment for my dog. I was told they wouldn’t have any appointments until mid - late September. If it can’t wait to take my pet to an animal hospital. The receptionist was rude and not caring at all. In all the years I’ve been taking my pets here I’ve never been treated this way. Definitely looking for a new veterinarian!

I have been coming to this Vet for a little over a year now and I cant say thank you to them enough! Every time I have visited the staff has been nothing but amazing. They are always very happy to see my fur baby and recently they went even more above and beyond. My friends found a very small cat on the side of the road and I offered to take it in. I immediately called them and brought her to get checked for a microchip. Unfortunately she did not have one but one of the nurses, Rachel immediately started taking photos of her to get posted onto their social media page. No one has stepped up to claim her so we decided to keep her and every staff member that i have spoken with has helped me so much by answering any questions that I have and giving me as much information as possible. This veterinary hospital goes above and beyond. Thank you to everyone that works there!!!

It is true that you can usually get an appointment very quickly which is great. But, two times I have dealt with a situation where I was waiting to get test results (that normally take 1.5 weeks max to receive back) for close to a month. I spent hundreds of dollars on an allergy panel for my dear dog, who was having bloody diarrhea, and I called about three times almost three weeks post test-results, to continually hear that a doctor would call me back. It is very poor relationship management to keep someone waiting that long when test results deeply effect the daily life of an animal. It makes a patient truly feel like they are not cared about. Another time, when my cat was on deaths door, we were waiting for the results of a scan and a doctor called and left a message saying to call back for results. We called back and heard that the vet wouldnt be in for three days and wed have to wait until then, meanwhile our cat was vomiting blood, nearing the end of his life. I demanded service, heard back about 6 hours later from a different doctor, telling me we should put our cat down immediately. Had we not heard from them for several more days, our poor cat couldve suffered a terrible fate. I will say that the support staff at the front desk is always wonderful but they arent the rude vets who think they are so important and have no time to make a 5 minute phone call when it is dealing with THEIR patients lives. I am completely disgusted by the experiences that Ive had there of late. Meanwhile, I have been a customer there for almost over 12 years. If I were you, I wouldnt go here if you didnt need to - they are overpriced, an assembly line and truly dont care about the livelihood of your animals. Its all business.Update on 1/30/18:Id also like to add that no one called to follow up about our cat. We had a local travel vet come to our house to euthanize him. But the original vet on the case did not call back to check in on our cat or even see if he was still alive. To their knowledge, they may actually still think hes alive. Crazy!

I just need to say how amazing Shaker Animal Hospital is. We had been seeing Dr. Cherry for years at another practice previously, both for Razor and for Roo. When we found out he moved to VCA Shaker, we scheduled an appointment to talk about the surgery Roo needed, as a second opinion. Dr. Cherry explained everything in detail, gave us multiple options and overall made us feel SO much better about how to handle the entire thing. We knew before we left that wed be getting the surgery done there, instead. The surgery went great, and Roo is recovering even better than expected, and I had no doubts it would work out that way, just because of how much trust I have in Dr. Cherry. He always goes way above and beyond to explain things and be patient with our millions of questions. He always does everything he can to make Mr. Roo feel comfortable and is just so incredibly sweet with him. I would not take Roo anywhere else.On top of that, this place is just amazing. We originally came here for the surgery and physical therapy, but have decided to switch here permanently. The place is very clean and EVERYONE is very friendly and helpful. Nobody has ever been grumpy or frustrated. Even when the front desk is busy, everyone is always patient and friendly, and will still take extra time to help you if needed. Ive never once felt rushed. The ladies doing Roos physical therapy have been amazing, too! When they knew we were curious about the therapy, they took a video of Roo in the underater treadmill just so we could see it afterwards. AND they took extra time before hand to get Roo comfortable. He even rolled over for belly rubs, something he never does at the vet! I was so impressed. Its also a very clean, beautiful place. They even have a separate little area for dogs to do their business outside, complete with a water fountain and fire hydrants for them to pee on! Its adorable.I would recommend VCA Shaker, and Dr. Cherry, to anyone looking for a new veterinarian.
