Volunteering at the Mohawk Humane Society was an incredibly fulfilling experience. The opportunity to sort empty bottles was a simple task that made a significant difference in supporting the shelters operations. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and they took the time to explain the importance of our efforts. It was heartwarming to see how dedicated everyone was to the well-being of the animals in their care. After our volunteer time, we were treated to a tour of the shelter. It was fascinating to learn more about the animals and the work that goes into providing them with a safe and loving environment.I would highly recommend volunteering at the Mohawk Humane Society. Its a great way to give back to the community and make a positive impact on the lives of animals in need.

My rating is highly influenced by El, the cat I adopted from MHHS. The cats at Mohawk dont stick around very long, and smaller dogs are popular as well. Its sad to see so many larger dogs stay for a very long time. Im told that many of these big dogs would be better in a home with no other dogs. Each has their own story and deserves a forever home. I took a tour of their facility and saw different rooms for animals that had specific care needs, theres a lot going on behind the scenes. The shelter collects bottles and cans and needs pet food as well. There are sometimes special offers, such as a discount on adoption fees for older dogs. Check their website for those and other programs.

I adopted a 2 month old kitten from the Humane Society about a week ago! The adoption was seamless and the foster dad she was living with was amazing so I know she came from a great place— Shoutout David! I got to meet with an adoption counselor while her foster dad was there which helped me get a feel for her life before and make the transition a bit easier for her! I do want to note— I was a walk-in which makes this experience all the more impressive. I am a first time cat owner and I went home feeling at ease and ready for this experience as they provided me with all of the information I need. She came home spayed and microchipped too which was a plus! Can’t recommend the humane society enough 💖 Thank you humane society, Im so in love with this sweet girl!!

Mohawk Hudson Humane Society**UPDATE 12-19-24 at 2:30 pmThe good news is MHHS cleared up any and all thoughts the cat they had was my Ali. I’ve never seen testicles on a cat before, and those 🍒 were large. Unfortunately, my Ali is still missing, but I hopefully made a bunch of new friends to help me find him.Ali got out the second day I became homeless this time. He got out once before, the first day I became homeless, in May of this year.My homelessness is in part due to standing up against racism and white supremacy in the aftermath of George Floyd, Amy Cooper, January 6, and other events, whereby I risked my comfort to make a difference, doing my part to make the world better for my children.Except for losing Ali, I have no regrets. I dont want sympathy or handouts. Hand-ups, however, are a different story.I’ve taken no shortcuts in life. Married the girl from high school, went all the way collegiately; the only sin I see was being born Black American, compounded by miseducation as described by Drs. Carter G. Woodson and W.E.B. Du Bois in their books The Souls of Black Folk and The Miseducation of the Negro. These books and many more need to be taught in the homes of all Black Americans. Black boys and girls need a different kind of education—not rooted in optimism, but the harsh statistical reality of what it means to be a descendant of race-based chattel slavery here in the United States.Back to Ali, I lost him in the second week of November while staying at the Cara House Homeless Shelter on State and Moyston Street in the Vale Park neighborhood. I’ve had him since he was 12 weeks old, given the birthday of August 15, 2021. We bonded while working from home during COVID, and he’s loved and missed more than you can ever know. Please like and share to help me secure his safe return. Thank you to every single one of you for the time and thoughts invested in us navigating MHHS and in general.Kindest regards,Eric Wright*My initial complaint against MHHS was deleted after a successful resolution**

MHHS is a great place to adopt. Weve adopted many animals there throughout the years, as has my brother. They keep the cats as comfortable as possible, with either they very own kitty condos or together in the community rooms. I always feel bad for the dogs, especially for ones a bit more sensitive to other dogs and their barking, the dogs echos horribly in the dog rooms. More foster families are always needed. it is also a great place for kids to volunteer with a couple of different programs they offer.

We stopped in today to explore adopting a dog. It didn’t quite work out this time, but no worries! Asher was incredibly helpful, walking us through everything we needed to know, and we’re so grateful for her time and expertise. We’ll definitely be back to hopefully find the perfect match. Big thanks to Asher for all her help, we really appreciate it and want to make sure she gets the recognition she deserves!

On 9/12/24 my experience with the shelter was very unprofessional I have my own cat and the cat has kittens and I explain to them when she done feeding them and get fixed I’m taking her back home. They told me No it’s their policy if I giving up my cat and the kittens I can’t get them back. They have no policy on the website saying I have to surrender my cat because of the kittens. And they are talking about I can’t take the cat back home because I live in the same house with my mom where dose it say on the policy and the employee saying I’m not comfortable with this saying it between me and my mom. If you not comfortable have someone else do your job. Im talking with my mom to see what we can do and your talking about your not uncomfortable what because I’m having a conversation with my mom. I have no idea about the rest of this organization, but End of Life Service needs to be revamped. There is no way anyone should have to go back and forth on emails when a dog is suffering and needs to be euthanized. It prolongs the suffering. I had to wait 24 hours for a response as it is stated. 24 hours? What is wrong with a phone call? What is going on that you can’t even make a phone call? That is not compassionate if you ask me. Very disappointed and upset. Glad my dog passed at home because I still would be waiting and my dog still would be suffering since email is the only way of communication.

We went there one day because I was needing a pick me up and we had been talking about getting me a service dog. When we went there I didn’t think we would find anything I wanted but when we walked through the dog room I saw Mason Z. He’s been the best dog I could’ve asked for and has been in training for a bit over a month to be my service dog. We met with him twice before adopting and the staff was amazingly helpful through it all. They explained the adoption process and were honest about what dogs might not be a good fit. They put all of his paperwork together neatly and even supplied an extra leash and collar. When we signed all the forms they gave us an adoption goody bag with everything from doggie bags to a bag of food. The staff is amazing and they don’t discriminate based off dog breed. They don’t treat any dogs like they’re mean or bad and they set a great example for how they should be treated.

*HIGHLY RECOMMEND SARATOGA ANIMAL SHELTER OVER THIS!*The shelter is well maintained but the staffing is poor. If you go to adopt, expect to wait hours. They have about 6 people behind the front desk and only one or two people doing adoptions for all the animals available. Due to this, you can barely spend any time with the animals once your turn does come and if you dont have the crate with you to take them home that second someone else can come and take them. Was heart wrenching waiting only for all the available animals to already be adopted before you get to see them(after waiting 3 hours multiple days). Its a shelter so of course I want to support it but I just cant deal with this ever again. I got a lovely cat from a fostering agency instead and Im so thankful for them after this horrid experience.Edit for their response: They had mentioned that they could not hold the animal while I went to get the carrier and I understand but it is good to know for anyone attempting to adopt here. I also will note I live a few minutes away and understand if that is their rule. They also do not allow adoption if you do not bring your entire family in case that is not possible for you. As per the construction comment, that is completely fine and the issue was the amount of people helping the adoptions. The wait was unbearable and I understand if staffing is difficult but waiting 3+ hours is not a fun part of any day. Thank you for the response and good luck to anyone searching for their new furry friend!

Pros: the building and place in general has upgrated into a nicer place, cleaner and bigger. Front desk girls were very nice! They had a lot of animals. My daughter was there for a tour with her girl scout troop, she spoke nice things about the place.Cons. My husband and I have been planning to adopt a cat over a year now and since we were up there we filled out the adoption application ect. We walked around immediately adored the cat named Brook. She was rubbing at the glass, my daughter was saying hi to her and she (brook) wanted to be pet. There was 2 other people in rooms looking/ meeting cats, so we asked to front desk if we could meet Brook. We met with the adoption counselor i believeis her job. (tall skinny women, older brown short hair) she told my daughter to keep her hands off the window and dont talk to the cats. The counselor asked what kind of cat we want we said an indoor family cat, she told us Brook was bitten by an unknown animal and unfriendly. (She was definitely opposite of that but okay) then we asked about the 7 month old cat in one of the rooms. That cat she said no that was a hoarding situation and she is unfriendly also she said there is no cats for our family try again in May when the kittens start coming in.We were heart broken to be turned away. And seemed unfair that other people could meet cats and we couldnt.I have adopted a cat here in 2010, she is an elder girlie now. She has the best personality ever! Was hoping to have another cat like her, shelter animals usually have the best personality. In the past I have always had strays that were terrified of people but with taking your time and patience you can have a wonderful family pet. Also another family there husband wife small child no older than 2 were able to adopt a dog that doesnt do well with children, their adoption counselor asked how high their home was and what kind of jobs they do. But they were able to proceed to adopt that dog. Maybe we didnt look a certain way to be turned down or whatever. Thanks for teaching the importance of an animal shelter and the nice tour, the donations go to a great cause, just wished for a better experience for wanting to adopt a cat.We will try another shelter for adoption for our family.

My review: I would go there to look at animals once in a while and last month I decided to adopt a kitten. Not even a week into having it my house burned down and the cat died inside so I went back to the animal shelter a few days later explaining what have happened with the kitten and house and asked was it possible get a new kitten since the one lost its life in the fire and I havent had it for even a week. The young women at the front desk looked me in the face and laughed! I was hurt and she gave no solution and clearly took me as a joke. The sign on the table talks about how other people should have respect and she did everything but. Im very disappointed how I was treated and how yall didnt have any type of solution not even a discount on a possible new kitten. I really did like your like going to your animal shelter but this was wrong in many ways and very unprofessional of your worker.Your response (owner): Seairah, we are so sorry for your loss.We checked in with our staff member who you spoke to and she was confused when you came into the shelter telling us your kitten had died and asked what we were going to do for you. That staff member got your original adoption counselor who spoke to you further. Your grandfather also called the shelter and asked if we could give you the littermate of the kitten as a replacement. Unfortunately that kitten had already been adopted. Your grandfather said never mind, then. We consider this case closed.Me: I’m aware this is a late response because I didn’t know how to respond back. But all I’m asking of yall is can I get a free kitten? I spent $200 on that kitten to not even have it for a week and that was a lot of money coming from a low income household. Literally all I want is a new kitten it doesn’t matter what kind of kitten just a small one. I will refill out all the paperwork again if y’all could please just give me another kitten!!! That’s all I ask! I’m pretty sure your company losing $200 is not gonna hurt your business so can yall please find the kindness in your hearts to bless me with a new kitten? That’s all I ask and I will drop this whole thing. I have all the evidence I need to prove I’m not lying about anything including dates/times/photos/etc of everything. I’m not sure what my grandpa said on the phone but I’m asking yall personally can I get a free kitten. One of yours workers said you have over 100 kittens in foster care getting fixed up waiting to go in your shelter. Can you please spare one? I don’t mind waiting. I’m a 19 year old black girl who saved all her money to have one nice thing which was unfortunately taken away. so if yall are not heartless souls it’s the least your company can do!!. I know you see all your reviews so now responding to this would be wrong Thank you.

I want to begin this by stating this isn’t a review out of malice or to make anyone look bad, my boyfriend and i are very appreciative of everything these people do, but we are grieving over something we felt could have been avoided. For a bit of back story, we adopted a cat a couple weeks ago, we were told she wasn’t the warmest to people, that she had been a stray, but overall was a normal, healthy cat. During our meet she had an episode of what we assumed was overstimulation towards her own tail, it was worrying, but the worker didn’t seem concerned, just told us to keep an eye on the behavior. After we brought her home, she warmed up with the help of treats and toys, but from day one she was vomiting. We got her in for an urgent vet appt, they said to change her food. no big deal.Fortunately it was simple solution for the vomiting, but unfortunately the vomiting is not the issue, the issue was she had an infection from her spay incision. We were additionally told the random episodes weren’t overstimulation, that the behavior was likely due to pain of the infection. Which means her overstimulation towards her tail in the meet and greet likely meant she was in pain. We were told she was spayed 2 days before she was adopted, i spoke with a vet tech at mohawk hudson about her not being sent home with a cone, and despite it not making sense, we were told they don’t normally use cones, even given her being spayed less than 48 hours prior to adoption.I don’t understand why a cone wouldn’t be used after a surgery? Though given her behavior at the meet and greet, she probably was already dealing with the infection. If we only had to treat nausea from her food, we could have handled that, we would clean vomit everyday if i meant having her, but once we got her home from our vet, (this time she was sent home with a cone) we realized we could do nothing, but watch that trust we worked hard to gain, disappear and turn into fear and aggression in a matter of hours.Unfortunately, for her own wellbeing, we had to make the hardest choice to surrender her after only a few weeks of having her. As heartbroken as we are, we felt we did not have the experience she needed for her recovery. It is incredibly frustrating to know if she had been sent home with a cone, maybe a check up to make sure the incision is healing properly before she leaves or at least give more time to recover from spay surgery before being adopted, that she would still be home with us. We were fortunate enough to get her an early vet appointment before it got worse. Again, we are very appreciative of people who take their time to love and care for animals in need, but It felt as if we were set up to fail from the start.

Facility is clean. I went here yesterday and filled out all my appropriate paperwork, I was told the wait would be an hour. I had not one issue waiting. There were approximately 20 employees I would say on the floor, after about an hour they called my name, and then told me I wouldn’t be able to see any dogs because they were closing soon. That would’ve been incredibly pertinent information while I was sitting there for an hour that I wouldn’t be able to see any of the dogs because they were closing. The next day after they checked the paperwork for my cats, they told me that I wouldn’t be a good candidate for adoption because my healthy indoor cat, one of two, hadn’t been to the vet in 3 to 4 years and my other cat went this year. Ok… meanwhile, the dog that I saw (only through glass of course) yesterday had eaten a bed the day before, but it was explained to me that they don’t do x-rays unless they think there’s an issue, but that they didn’t find all the pieces of the bed when they were picking it up, and then he could’ve ingested some metal or things as such. Also that he had been returned by a family once already but they didn’t know why because they don’t ask. Isn’t that important information? Did he bite someone? Get sick? Attack another dog? I came in there to help a dog, to rescue a dog, I own my own home, it is clean, larger, and I have a large backyard and no children . I have someone who’s at home all day, so the dog would never be alone, and I have the financial capability to give a dog a good life. So to me it seems like I’d be the perfect candidate, but not here!

Claimed the older cat we adopted was dewormed however we later found that he did have tapeworms and infected our other 3 cats. We were not told of a deformity in his legs that who knows how this will affect the cat long term. We were also assured he is good with other cats yet he bullies and fights with our other 3 cats, scratching them so bad they have scars now. Half the cats when we went to see about adopting were by appointment only with 1 singular person who had to tell you about their laundry list of health problems. We were told because it had been 3 months since we adopted this cat that they wouldn’t do anything about the fact that their cat infected our entire house with worms. He is an inside cat with no access to anything that would have given the cat worms (they claimed fleas or hunting rodents which he has neither) so the only cause is this shelter. The only positive is the front desk staff was lovely when we first adopted him.

This is very well kept and clean. There is a pet reception area where you can visit the various animals for adoption. They also have a pet food pantry and a surgical suite. A fenced area outdoors caters to becoming familiar with your prospective pet and meet and greet your other pets. There is a designated bootle drive drop off area to help with the costs incurred by the shelter in order to offer community classes, low cost procedures, stray animal management, and general cost and care for housing animals. This property was upgraded with a new beautifully maintained building. Parking and entrance is accessible for handicapped visitors. Please be aware of the drop off policy in regard to surrendering a pet which includes calling for an appointment. The shelter can be full and unable to receive your pet but can have alternative surrender options.

They describe every animals health conditions and personality perfectly and try to make the best match possible. You can leave with you pet day of and get a bag of food to go with. As someone who hasn’t owned a cat in a while they answered any and all questions I had and we’re so happy to do so. They are so helpful I had a hard time finding a vet to take new clients and they are even letting me come in to get my kittens final booster there. I am so happy with my kitten and where I got her from when I am ready for more animals I will only be coming here. They truly want what’s best for both owner and pet and are great at coming up with the right match.

Staff is very warm and welcoming. Went with my sister so she could adopt a cat. The cat area is open for walk-ins so you can just come in and go see the kitties in that area. It was quick and painless doing a meet and greet with the kitty we were interested in. There was a short wait as there was only one room available to use to meet but it gave us an opportunity to go around and look at the others as well as ask questions and fill out the paperwork. Dogs are by appointment only so make sure you plan ahead if you are interested in meeting a dog. The adoption process was very easy and informative. Staff is very knowledgeable. We call him saucy or tar tar sauce when he gets in his playful mood. The moment I told the woman at the shelter what I was looking for in a cat. She showed me Taurus and his sister Gemini. She was stand off and shy but he came up and wanted to be pet and play and thats when I knew Taurus was who I was taking home. I still wonder about his sister and hope she found a home as well. I went to adopt a dog today. I was very upset and discouraged at the fact, that the one particular staff member, was rude and uncaring. Then to be told that she had no idea of the background of the dog that was left off at the shelter there. She acted like it was such a burden to go and check information out on the dog, that I wanted to adopt. I saw one dog that looked sad. They all looked sad. It broke my heart to be told that I had to wait to talk to a counselor to see if the dog and I was a perfect match. OK, I understand that. Who wouldnt. But, to be coldly told that Id have to sit with the counselor for 2 hours, was weird. It was so obvious that the dog that I wanted to adopt, definitely wanted to come home with me. I ended up walking out being mad upset and sad, for both the dog and myself. Is it all about the money , that only counts to the mohawk Hudson humane society and not the well-being of the pets there?? They had me believing that they actually care about the animals there. Not true. Its a smoking mirror of lies to get donations, so they look good. Ill never ever go back there. My heart is broken and goes out to all the animals, that cant be adopted, etc..Im still drying my eyes from crying. If I had my way, Id adopt all of them at the shelter. But, I cant. I pray that St. Francis, the patron saint of all the animals look over them and find them homes, and quick.

My family and I recently went to seek out a specific dog we had seen on their website. They were very upfront regarding the dog, and told us that this particular dog was very loud and mouthy because shes been there too long. I still insisted on trying her out in their outdoor kennel. We had brought our younger son who is the one I was concerned about interacting with her and it didnt go very well. We had looked around at some other dogs there and selected a puppy for adoption which we were told to come back on Saturday because she was not adoptable at the time and needed to be fixed first. Saturday came we were second in line. It was a lot more expensive for her than an older dog, but she will grow with our son. She has stolen our hearts and now completes our family. The staff there are caring toward the animals they have and very aware of whom they are letting the animals go home with. The front desk staff was very busy, and handled all concerns with no problem. I have always adopted all my animals, the only way it should be done . However I visited the new facility and was trying to do my best to pet a beautiful 3 year old mix whom was loving and friendly through his cage, and clearly trying to lay his little head in my hand the best he could. I was seriously interested in taking him home as his brother was already being adopted out and I didnt want him to be alone. When I went up front to inquire, I was told to fill out their application and I obliged, they took one look and said I couldnt have any of the dogs because I have already adopted a cat and they dont know how any of their dogs will react with cats. I have never abandoned any of my fur babies and my household allows all the comfort and love and care they would ever need. My heart was broken that I had to leave that little guy behind, who I am sure would have much rather left that day to go home with a family who would provide happily for him and appreciate him. I have never been so disappointed in this animal shelter. My cat is so loving towards other animals and helped tremendously by being a best friend to my other dog in the last years of her life. This place is still a disgusting place to ever adopt from. I have been here twice in the past week. The first time I was here, there were 3 seperate crates where dogs had soiled themselves. I alerted a member of staff and the front desk about this. I was on my way out and I figured it would get done. I returned yesterday to view some of the cats and had a high interest in one. I would only need a couple of hours to make the decision at home, and asked if it was possible to hold onto her for a couple of hours. Instead of bringing her into a stressful environment, I would clean up the house quickly and come back for her. They told me they would not hold onto her for me. I asked what would be the difference between what I was asking and the holding service they offer to people who are dropping off their pets (They allow people up to 3 days to hold their animals in times of hardship). They told me Its just something we dont do. I went home to clean up and came back sure enough the animal was gone. Through my frustration I went to look at the dog cages and you can bet the same kennels had feces in them. Disgusting place to do business. Never will I ever return here and would reccomend to stay away from this place.

This place is a joke. I brought my 11yr old daughter there to adopt a dog. The first dog we choose was a very friendly black lab. After we filled out all the paperwork they informed us that we couldn’t adopt the dog because it was timid. That was their only explication. This dog got up and came running right up to us wagging its tail and sniffed our hands then let us pet it. He only barked when we walked away. A timid dog tucks it tail under it’s hind legs and cowers. This dog was clearly not timid..They let us meet the second dog we choose, a large husky mix. In a large meeting room they immediately unleashed the dog and sat down. No introduction, no letting the dog sniff our hand and paid no attention to it or us. We approached the dog and let it sniff us then we petted the dog. The dog bit my daughter! They should have left this dog leashed and let it sniff us, let the dog get comfortable and make sure it was relaxed before unleashing it. I’ve never witnessed such incompetence in my life. These people have NO clue about a dogs temperment or how to handle them. The whole experience was a nightmare,

We waited about 2.5 hours during their “Clear the shelter” event today to see a specific dog, only to be told that the ONLY person who could show the dog had left. If the dog had been adopted by a family in line in front of us, I would have been happy for the dog. However, to wait that long to not even be able to see a dog that is still available is unacceptable! Furthermore, my husband and our current dog were waiting in the car almost the whole 2.5 hours. I will NEVER adopt from this shelter, nor will I make a donation to it either.UPDATE 08/30/19: It’s been nearly two weeks since our visit. I left a message for the CEO before I left the parking lot that day and my husband sent an email. Still waiting on a response to both attempts at communication.

I recently went through a divorce. My ex husband stole my Red Healer Chevelle and her 5 puppies from me while I was out of the house and took them to this shelter. I went the next day to retrieve them all back and the shelter refused to give them to me. I later had my lawyer return with the papers showing ownership of the dogs including my service dog certificate for the mother only to find out that the shelter had SOLD all of them. They do not care about the love of the dogs. It was all about the money to them. I called numerous times and left numerous messages trying to retrieve my dogs. I will be filing a lawsuit for sure and they will think twice about what they did to me. I lost sometime special to me. I lost members of my family. I will never know if they are truly loved like I loved them. The heartbreak they caused me has no lint on it!!!

Got a great rescue dog from here, Wali. She was raised in an Ohio prison and she is a great dog. The staff were helpful in choosing a dog - they give each dog a walk-ability score and have a couple of outdoor areas where you can interact with the dogs.Keep in mind that the staff are very busy and I think many are volunteers, so they wont be super responsive...I recommend going directly there with any questions rather than calling.

This is a review of the staff I interacted with, and not the shelter itself as a whole. I went there on a friday to adopt a dog, and was told that the particular dog I wanted would not be available until the next day, when he would be at an even off-site. The staff were very insistent on this, and would not even let me walk the dog. When I arrived at the location the next day, I discovered that the dog had been adopted that morning, and that no one remembered someone coming in to adopt him later. The facility itself is great, and there are many, many dogs for those who arent too picky about the breed they want. If you want a cat, get one thats more than two years old; youll get it for free. I would strongly promote getting an animal from here, but interact with the front desk staff as little as possible.

Its clean, well-organized, and the animals seem well cared for. I went with a my kids from a shelter to see the animals, maybe pet or walk some, and help bring up morale. I find it interesting that thats not allowed. Their reasoning was because they dont want the animals to get attached to you? I would think that they need socialization to stay adoptable but whatever. Wont be returning.

The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, the pound! Please give a homeless pet a new home! they also have medical services for your pets, by appointment or emergency. But the fees are similar to other veterinarian cost with the exception of spay and neutering. Spay and neutering cost are reduced for people that are living on fixed or low incomes, and sometimes free. You can also get pet food if you need it, but sometimes they run out. There is no cost for the pet food. If you must surrender a pet, this would be your best bet. But please do not surrender your pets. Please just love them.

I’ve had a unwelcoming experience here when I tried to bring in a cat during June of last year. They told me that they were unable to take in my cat because she was upset the day I brought her in. They told me that they would end up putting her down because she was growling at the time her and I were in their office. And when I offered to give up all of her food I had bought as a donation, they told me that they only give the animals same kind of food. If I am donating high quality food, it shouldn’t matter whether or not it’s the same as it is in the shelter; it’s still cat food. I ended up having to give my cat to a friend of mine because I knew my cat was a very loving cat who simply was just having a bad day. I even asked to volunteer there due to my love for pets and the women told me that I needed experience. ?? Even though I told her my history with my cat but, who needs experience to volunteer???

This place is absolutely horrible! I feel really bad for their animals they house. On top of the very unfriendly staff they use all bleach products to clean the facility ( knowing that some dogs there have bleach allergies). If some select staff have personal (not humane society related) issue with you they will lock the door during open business hours in the middle of the winter and just watch you knock on the door as you are outside freezing! I am very upset with how this place treats their fur families. It’s absolutely disgusting! If for some reason you need to rehome your pet please consider a different organization! I hope all their animals find loving homes and they do not get anymore dropped off!

So as of now one star due to these reasons I went in to look at a dog I wanted to adopt the dog potentially and asked about it was 5:30 in the place was closing at 6 she told us that the information she could give us she looked it up on the computer after she said she couldnt and then did and told us that the dog was available for adoption and that he was a nice happy-go-lucky dog we were going to bring our dogs in the next day to visit with the dog after we met him and if everything went well we would have dropped him when we went the next day I had my dogs ready to go and the lady told us there has been a mistake the dog has already been on hold and will be on hold until the end of the day I said well isnt the whole 24 hours and she said well theres been a mistake as if she didnt know why there was any reason for there being a longer hold than 24 hours but if there is a 24-hour hold we came in at 5:30 p.m. and the dog was not on hold then and then the next day at 11 a.m. the dog was on hold apparently from the day before or even the day before that and she didnt know and she didnt tell us any more information. All we asked was that she call those people and find out if they were still interested in the dog or not if they were not then we could look at him and maybe take him home but she did not want to call them and she told us she would maybe call them later in the day and if she did not get a hold of them the dog would still be on hold until the end of the day and I said so at 6 then or 5:30 we could come back and and get him out and probably take him home and she says no well it would still be it would have to be the next day so therefore if a potentially interested person was to take home the dog and now the dog is on hold for up to however many hours past 24 hours now the dog may not be taken home by those potentially interested people but left on hold and then never adopted or not as soon as he could have been. The lady was just very unhelpful and did not seem concerned with the welfare of the dog and she was really just not very informed and only kept stating we make mistakes I made a mistake I made a mistake will that make of a mistake could be a mistake for the dog as well and I think she needs to realize that

They have contracts with the city to take in stray animals so they have to make room by euthanizing any dog who shows an inkling of stress. They might as well be called the capital region pound.I volunteered there and saw it all go down. I watched a very obviously abused dog come in, no investigation was launched in to who did it, she was left in a kennel for weeks not being let out, then she was euthanized for guarding people. Would give 0 stars if I could. My mother tried bringing a kitten here last year. That was found in our garage. The kitten was injured and couldnt walk well. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society turned their backs on helping this little kitten because my mother fed it. Obviously, it couldnt go catch mice or fend for itself when it was so little and injured. So, let me get this straight. My mother was supposed to let it starve? My mother used to donate to this place, also. Not any more.

I was here on Saturday the 21st and came in walked around and only 2 of the staff were actually approachable the rest of them were kind of just rude, there was a gentlemen at the front who was actually rude in the end that kind of left a bad taste. But I saw Storm he was a smaller 2 year old lab/retriever/pit mix and I really fell in love with him I hung out with him for a good half hour outside of his space. I went to the front to ask to do a meet and greet and the man who was at the front said are you planning on adopting him? I said to him im pursuing adopting a dog, he was very snide and said you need to fill out this application. The woman who was at the front desk came back and said Storm? She said you cant see him yet as he hasnt been assessed he just got her a few days ago. She said if you check back to the website. In a few days you will be able to see if he is available. So my husband wasnt there with me to actually help me so I told him he would go back on Sunday so he could atleast see what he looked like and kind of get an idea of how he acted. We went back Sunday the 22nd around 1 went back to see him and they let someone adopt him in less than 24 hours after they told me to check back in a few days. It was just really messed up and they should have just said something but they didnt. Hopefully people do not have the same experience as I did especially with the staff in the front.

I have always supported this establishment but until recently I don’t know if I can anymore. The way they handled a particular situation was very discouraging. A local family who lost their cat Hunter after making posters and plastering his face and information all over social media and even emailed this Humane Society were told that their cat was up for adoption by a friend that was browsing the site. It took the Humane Society five days to respond to an email sent from the owner and they finally did respond an hour after he was adopted. They posted a picture of the couple who adopted him on their Facebook page and all this family wanted was for the Humane Society to just reach out to the people that adopted their cat and just give them their information in hopes that the couple would do the right thing and contact the family and give them their cat back. The family even said that they would pay for the couple to adopt another cat. The Humane Society told them that there was nothing that they could do and proceeded to block and restrict accounts that were sharing and talking about the story on their social media since the family decided to take it upon themselves to share the picture of the couple in hopes that someone would know them. They also called the cops on the owner for harassment. The family had an article written about the whole experience in the Times Union newspaper. The Humane Society called and complained about that and tried getting the article taken down. They delete every comment on their Facebook that had to do with this story and every review on Google they also try to delete. Everyone understands that this is just how the adoption process works and they stated on their Facebook page that to avoid this in the future to get your animal micro chipped. Not everyone can afford to get their pet micro chipped and accidents happen all the time. All the Humane Society had to do was just give the couple that adopted Hunter the owners information and let those two people take it upon themselves to possibly do the right thing. The Humane Society even had workers and volunteers stalking the owners Facebook page, one of them even accidentally sent her a friend request and then proceeded to remove it shortly after. This is just a very sad situation. Do better MHHS!

UPDATEWe were surprised today to see the dreaded D-Word is no longer used to describe adoptable cats. Ours and others entreaties to senior management about this apparently struck a chord. Finally.Over the years, we noted that emails and or calls to shelter officials went unanswered. We therefore decided-with the declawing term still in place--to direct our giving elsewhere.EARLIER REVIEWIt may be a decent shelter but one of its practices is unacceptable. That is the use of the terms like Declawed in describing adoptable cats. The mere mention of the term could put ideas in potential adoptive candidates who otherwise would not think of employing such a barbaric practice that has been shunned by most enlightened vets and others who understand its gratuitous cruelty. A cat must not be left defenseless if it somehow escapes its environs. If one adopts a cat, it should not alter its natural state in favor of preserving e.g. a piece of furniture. The potential joy a cat can offer is far more valuable .

They have pets on their website that are up for adoption that already have owners. Mohawk Humane is refusing to let these owners reclaim their lost pets. Mohawk Humane also refuses to hold the pets until the owners can come up with the money to re-adopt the pet they already own. I adopted a cat from the place and when adopted I was told he had just had a check up and everything was “fine” I took him home and everything was good to go until it wasn’t about a couple weeks later. I was going to clip his nails and I noticed on ALL his paws there was a fungal infection growing around EVERY claw. I called the lady that was responsible for him and she said “oh he didn’t have anything like that when he was here” which I found to be bs because it’s clear that infection has been there for a while. I took him back to be examined by the vet there and he have him some lowlevel antibiotics that didn’t work and now I’m stuck paying a ton of money in vet bills. I understand when we adopt an animal it is our responsibility to take care of them but They should be more transparent about the condition of the animals before giving them over to people – I felt extremely deceived because like I said I was told he was perfectly healthy when he clearly wasn’t. If I could give less than a one star I would.UPDATE: took him to get examined by an outside vet and she diagnosed him on the spot as well as said he has been dealing with an autoimmune condition for a verrryyyy long time and will most likely need to be on long term medications. This is something i wish was disclosed to me when i had asked them multiple times if there was something i should be aware of. I understand adopting comes with its costs, but not everyone has the money for constant vet trips and specialized food/medicine/litter.

DO NOT ADOPT FROM THIS SHELTER. My son, a student with no money, incurred over $3,000 in veterinary bills within days of adopting a cat. The cat was treated by a vet for many issues including anemia and a potential blockage in her GI tract. The cat had to have blood work, exploratory surgery, a biopsy, a transfusion and went into cardiac arrest. On the day of the surgery, my son tried multiple times to contact the shelter-who totally ignored him. He could no longer wait and had the surgery done, otherwise the cat would have died. The shelter would not tap into their Guardian Angel Fund to assist with some of the bills because the costs were incurred without pre-approval from or an agreement with their organization. He tried many times to contact the shelter before the surgery-they did not respond. What was he supposed to do? Let the cat die??

I cant say enough good things about our experience with Mohawk Hudson. They are amazing people doing difficult work. Were so happy to have brought our buddy Leo home!

My friend, a bunny rescuer brings her rescues here to be fixed throughout the year. This past Saturday, Dr. Christine Cornish gave my bunny KETAMINE for her spay because she claimed the regular anesthesia wasn’t working. She never even asked us if it was ok, just went ahead and did it. She never recovered - a baby at only 8 months old that she gave KETAMINE for a simple procedure she apparently does daily. DO NOT BRING YOUR BUNNY TO Dr. CORNISH!
